Salem 28, Pocahontas 8

SALEM — Defending 3A state champion Salem showed why it’s the team to beat again in 2025, capitalizing on key defensive stops to down Pocahontas 28-8 on Tuesday night.

The Greyhounds’ defense turned in two game-changing plays inside the red zone, halting promising Pocahontas drives with interceptions at the goal line. Each takeaway snuffed out momentum and swung the tide in Salem’s favor, keeping the Redskins from closing the gap despite moving the ball effectively throughout the night.

Pocahontas found offensive rhythm with running back Xayver Ballard, who pounded out 85 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, including a 35-yard burst that was the team’s longest play. Quarterback Spencer James added 67 passing yards on 10 completions while also grinding for 34 yards on the ground, but turnovers proved costly. Receiver Brendyn Arnold hauled in six catches for 42 yards, and Mason Priest contributed 21 yards through the air.

Defensively, Pocahontas showed grit against Salem’s balanced attack. Linebacker Ryder Baltz racked up a team-high 11 tackles, while Evan Thompson added 7.5 stops in the trenches. Mathias Duran (6.5 tackles) and Carter Couch (3.5 tackles) helped keep Salem honest up front, and Austin George recorded an interception to give the Redskins a spark.

Pocahontas (0-1) will turn its focus to correcting mistakes before opening 5A-East play against Greene County Tech this week. Eliminating turnovers and finishing drives will be key for the Redskins.
