HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 6 South Side Bee Branch (4-1) at No. 3 MAGAZINE (4-0): South Side Bee Branch, averaging 60.8 points per game, takes on a Magazine team that has allowed no points in 3 of its 4 games. Both teams are on 4-game winning streaks coming into a game that could decide the 8-man West. South Side Bee Branch is coming off a 52-6 victory over Guy-Perkins, the first game the Hornets have not scored 60 or more points. Senior quarterback Caden Mahan (19-29-249 passing, 5 total TDs) now leads the 8-man conference in passing yards. Junior wide receiver Jacob Riddle (14-175, 2 TDs) led the team in receiving yards. Bee Branch Coach Todd Langrell says Magazine is a good team with speed and size. “I think they are great tacklers and pursue the ball exceptionally well,” Langrell says. “We will prepare as usual. Just trying to go 1-0 this week.” Magazine continued its winning streak last Friday with a 42-8 win over Arkansas Christian, the first game Magazine has allowed points. Senior quarterback Daniel Green had a Tim Tebow-type day, rushing for 129 yards and 2 TDs and completing both of his pass attempts for 122 yards and another 2 TDs. Junior Christian Carey had a 72-yard receiving TD. The Rattlers defense forced 5 turnovers and scored 1 TD. Magazine Coach Ryan Chambers says South Side is not only physical, but has a worthy quarterback in Green. “We will have to be disciplined on defense all the way around,” he says. “If we get caught looking for a run, they throw it well; if we sell out to stop the pass, they run it well. Should be a great test for our defense.” Magazine has the home-field advantage, but the Rattlers cannot get into a shootout with the Hornets. South Side’s defense has given up 60-plus points in 2 games. The Hornets need to get Magazine out of its comfort zone and score quickly to make the Rattlers offense play from behind. Hootens.com believes Magazine’s defense will hold strong over South Side and get the win Friday.

8-MAN WEST

No. 10 Arkansas Christian (3-2) at No. 9 ROSE BUD (2-3): Arkansas Christian lost to Magazine 42-8 last Friday as quarterback Owen Pitts passed for 55 yards, a TD, and had a pass intercepted. Rose Bud lost last Friday when Izard County scored the game-winning TD with less than a minute left. Sophomore Kade Wortham had 104 rushing yards on 17 attempts.

JC Westside (1-4) at No. 5 IZARD COUNTY (4-1): Izard County beat Rose Bud 28-20 last week, and sophomore Kane Johnson (11-15-152 passing, 2 total TDs) led the way. JC Westside lost 50-12 to Cave City last Friday. Izard County gets the win on Homecoming.

Guy-Perkins (1-3) at CAVE CITY (3-2): Cave City beat JC Westside 50-12 last week. Junior Brian Payton (2-71 rushing, 2 TDs) led the way. Guy-Perkins lost 52-6 to South Side Bee Branch last week. Cave City gets a good win before going on the road for the next 3 weeks.

8-MAN EAST

Midland (2-2) at No. 1 CORNING (5-0): Corning keeps dominating, beating Brinkley 44-6 last week. Junior Nate Jansen (24-118-2 TDs) led the offense; senior Ty Price led the defense with 2 tackles and a fumble recovery that led to a TD. Midland beat Marvell, 40-32. Senior Aaron Bozeman (20-173 rushing, TD) led the way last week, but Corning continues its run of dominance.

Rector (1-3) at No. 8 BRINKLEY (3-1): Rector lost to Cedar Ridge 44-14 last week, despite an all-around effort by Austin Avery (14-81 rushing, TD; 9 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 TFLs). Brinkley lost to top-ranked Corning last week.

OPEN Cedar Ridge, Marvell

8-MAN SOUTH

Hermitage (2-3) at No. 7 LAFAYETTE COUNTY (4-1): Lafayette County beat Blevins 73-20 last week as Jayden Sterling caught 2 passes for 67 yards and 2 TDs. Hermitage lost 76-22 to Strong last week. Lafayette County’s defense could be the deciding factor.

FRIENDSHIP ASPIRE (0-6) at Blevins (0-5): These teams, with a combined 0-11 record, face off in a game that could determine last place in the conference. Friendship Aspire has played more games than anyone in 8-man this year, losing to Woodlawn 52-12 last week. Rashawd Smith finished with 205 total yards and 2 TDs. Blevins lost 73-20 to Lafayette County last week, but Christian Docherty scored 2 kickoff-return TDs. Blevins has the home-field advantage and numbers, but Friendship has the talent to win.

WOODLAWN (2-2) at Dermott (0-4): Senior Griffin Manes (16-309-5 TDs) had a monster game to help Woodlawn beat Friendship Aspire 52-12 last week. Dermott has not played a game since a loss to Brinkley because of low numbers. Woodlawn gets a win this week to get ready for its upcoming conference games.
