No. 3 Bismarck (3-1) at No. 5 SMACKOVER (4-0)

The Buckaroos are averaging 333 yards rushing per game. They are led by sophomore Kiundre Billingly, junior Madison McElroy and junior Trason Parlor.  Billingly (7-164 rushing last week; 23.3 yards per carry this season). The Lions counter with a more balanced attack led by Cayden Burch and Clayton Martinez. Burch is averaging 160 passing yards and 101 rushing yards per game. The Lions won 58-21 last season and 36-27 in 2024. Smackover last beat Bismarck in 2019. Each team has faced at least one tough opponent so far, and it could turn into a shootout. Give Smackover, which has the home-field advantage, the nod in this one. 

WEEK 3 PREDICTIONS (favored teams in ALL CAPS and highlighted in orange)

1-3A

 No. 2 MANSFIELD (3-2) at Cedarville (4-1): Mansfield got pushed by Lavaca last week but held on 38-34. Jeremiah Burton, Colton Moore and Silas Burton are all on pace to be 1,000-yard rushers. Cedarville got a huge win over Paris last week and is averaging 32 points per game. If Cedarville can play keep-away from Mansfield, the game can stay close. 

West Fork (2-3) at No. 18 LAVACA (3-2): The Golden Arrows provided the Week 4 surprise with a 4-point loss to second-ranked Mansfield. Lavaca has scored at least 27 points in every game this season, with both losses coming by 8 points or less. The Golden Arrows should get back on track this week against a West Fork team that is allowing 49 points per game and has given up 57 or more points in 3 games this season.

No. 15 CHARLESTON (1-3) at Paris (2-3): The Tigers had a week to get healthy after a brutal nonconference slate left them beaten and bruised. Lukas Burleson is averaging 160 yards per game in total offense, and leading rusher Finn Schmalz is averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Paris, playing with 7 seniors, has taken some lumps, but the defense has been stingy at times. Charleston should have enough to win on the road before the tougher conference games start lining up. 

OPEN Greenland

2-3A

No. 17 Quitman (3-1) at No. 12 NEWPORT (2-2): The Bulldogs can score, but the 54 points they allowed to Melbourne did them in last week. Now, they have to shut down Luke Sampson and the Greyhounds offense on the road. Jataelyn Crite has been a bright spot for Newport. If this game turns into a shootout, Quitman may have a shot at a mild upset, but Newport is battle-tested and a tough place for visitors. 

Salem (1-3) at No. 16 MELBOURNE (2-2): The Greyhounds finally broke through last week with a 46-20 win over Yellville-Summit after a slow start to the season. Melbourne pulled off a mild upset last week and now has a chance to improve playoff positioning with a home win.

Riverview (1-3) at YELLVILLE-SUMMIT (1-3): Riverview got a much-needed win over Marshall last week but may find things a little tougher as they head up the mountain. The Panthers have moved the ball through the air this season, with sophomore QB Westin Swearingen averaging 265 yards per game. 

MOUNTAIN VIEW (1-3) at Marshall (0-4): Marshall put up a fight last week in a one-score loss to Riverview. Mountain View has to rebound from a shutout loss to Newport to stay alive in the playoff race. 

3-3A

No. 14 Palestine-Wheatley (4-0) at No. 8 WALNUT RIDGE (3-1): Jasper Callahan rushed for 198 yards and 5 touchdowns on 12 carries last week, and Jace Blake had 211 yards and a score. The Patriots’ defense has allowed 29 points so far this season, but they have not seen an offense like Walnut Ridge. This is the start of a big 3-game stretch for the Patriots. Strange things start happening this time of the year, but the Bobcats have too many weapons. 

No. 7 RIVERCREST (3-1) at Piggott (0-4): The Colts will get this one over early, about like they did last week. If they can get through this game healthy, it gets tougher in the middle of the month. 

Manila (0-4) at No. 13 OSCEOLA (2-2): The Seminoles are going for their third shutout in their past 4 games with the Lions visiting this week. Manila was down 43-0 to Rivercrest at halftime last week before scoring 2 touchdowns in the second half. Osceola has too many weapons for Manila in this one.

Hoxie (1-3) at HARRISBURG (2-2): Harrisburg gave up over 400 yards rushing last week to Walnut Ridge; Hoxie couldn’t get much going on offense against Palestine-Wheatley. It was the third game this season Hoxie has been held to 7 points or less. The Hornets get the edge at home. 

4-3A

Cutter Morning Star (0-4) at No. 4 GLEN ROSE (2-2): The Eagles are getting a hard lesson since moving up from 8-man football, but they are competing every week. Now they have to travel to a Glen Rose team coming off a 43-point win and featuring one of the best playmakers in 3A. The Beavers win this one, but Cutter keeps it interesting for a bit. 

Perryville (1-3) at No. 6 ATKINS (3-1): Things do not get easier for the Mustangs as they head to Atkins after opening conference with Glen Rose. This game may look like last week’s loss, unfortunately. Perryville has a shot to keep it close if the offense can keep the ball away from Atkins. Don’t expect it, though, as Austin Dobbs’ team is playing good football right now. 

JESSIEVILLE (1-3) at Two Rivers (0-4): The Lions took out a month’s worth of frustrations last week against Conway Christian. Jacob Graves is over 1,000 yards of offense, and senior Tristan Reid has 432 yards and 5 scores. Jessieville may put up 60 again this week. 

DANVILLE (3-1) at Conway Christian (0-4): The Little Johns rolled in the conference opener and got touchdowns from 4 different players. Conway Christian put up 32 or more points for the second time this season in a loss to Jessieville last week. The Eagles can score, but they’ve struggled to stop teams with deeper rosters. This one could be closer, but Danville gets the win. 

7-3A

No. 3 Bismarck (3-1) at No. 5 SMACKOVER (4-0). See Hootens.com Game of the Week

No. 11 PRESCOTT (3-1) at Horatio (0-4): The Curly Wolves continue their run through the easier part of the schedule with a road win at Horatio this week. It is more important for Brian Glass’ squad to stay healthy and work on their game with tougher matchups looming in October. 

HARMONY GROVE (O.C.) (1-3) at Cossatot River (0-4): HGOC needs this win after a disappointing start. Smackover ran through, around and past the Hornets last week in a 62-0 win. Harmony Grove still has everything in front of it and will get a road win. 

CENTERPOINT (3-1) at Parkers Chapel (1-3): The Knights need to win this one to stay in contention for the playoffs, with the back half of their schedule being the toughest. The Trojans have not played well since beating Hampton to open the season. 

8-3A

No. 1 FORDYCE (2-1) at Drew Central (0-4): The Redbugs were off last week and hit the road to face the best winless team in 3A. Jamartez Stroud and Micah Gamble are too tough for the Pirates. Fordyce wins big. 

Dumas (1-3) at No. 9 RISON (4-0): Rison went on the road and beat Helena by 16 points. Rison’s rushing attack is one of the best in 3A, and with the Dumas defense struggling after giving up 62 points to Lake Village, the Wildcats roll in this one. 

McGehee (2-2) at No. 19 LAKE VILLAGE (4-1): The Beavers scored 46 points in the first half last week against Dumas, while McGehee got a good win over Drew Central. Lakeside’s offense may be too much for the Owls, and they get the edge at home.
