Vilonia 49, Maumelle 14
MAUMELLE — Cooper Hanson threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores as Vilonia built a 21-point first-quarter lead and defeated Maumelle 49-14 Friday night at Bobby Tiner Stadium.
Robert Meyers scored three times, twice on passes from Hanson, and Kyler Francis added a late touchdown run. The Eagles improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the 5A-Central. Maumelle fell to 1-4 and 0-2.
Hanson helped establish the offense on the opening possession. After an early loss, he completed a pass to Javid Hollingsworth, scrambled for a first down and broke a longer run that carried the Eagles to Maumelle’s 10. Meyers finished the drive with a seven-yard run on third down, waiting behind his blockers before finding the opening. Luke Robinson’s extra point made it 7-0.
Parker Hickman recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, giving Vilonia the ball at the Hornets’ 41. Hanson gained seven yards on a keeper before finding Meyers alone downfield for a touchdown. Robinson’s kick pushed the lead to 14-0 before Maumelle’s offense took its first snap.
The Eagles forced a punt, then moved downfield again. Meyers converted fourth-and-short and added a six-yard run. Following a delay-of-game penalty, Hanson hit Jackson Ringgold for a 20-yard touchdown. Vilonia led 21-0 with 1:45 left in the first quarter.
Maumelle answered in the second quarter. Jacob Torian’s third-down reception helped move the Hornets inside the 15, and Evan Wallace found Winchell Wiggins for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-7 with 8:42 remaining in the half.
Vilonia responded with another scoring drive. Facing fourth-and-goal at the 1, Hanson kept the ball and reached the end zone. The Eagles protected their 28-7 halftime lead when John Duncan recovered a fumble near the goal line with 16 seconds remaining.
Hanson’s running again moved Vilonia into position in the third quarter. He converted third-and-eight, added a longer scramble and connected with Ringgold near the goal line. Maumelle held through three downs, but Hanson found Meyers on a fourth-down swing pass for another touchdown and a 35-7 advantage.
Wallace opened the fourth quarter with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Derious Glover, trimming the margin to 35-14. The Eagles then faced a potential punt, but Hanson ran from punt formation to keep the possession alive. He finished the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run, spinning through traffic with 8:18 remaining.
Vilonia added a late interception, and Francis supplied the final touchdown on a 39-yard run. Robinson converted his seventh extra point to complete the scoring.
