MOUNT IDA — Jett Brooks scored three touchdowns, and Mount Ida turned two first-half red-zone stops into scoring drives before pulling away from Hector 36-0 Friday night at Stidman Field.
Brooks ran for touchdowns of 12 and 19 yards and added a touchdown reception on a screen pass. Chris Dorrell and Kaceston Phimvongsa also scored on the ground as the Lions improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in conference. Hector fell to 4-3 and 1-2.
The Wildcats opened with a possession that consumed more than six minutes and reached the Mount Ida 8. The Lions finally ended the threat on fourth down, when Brooks broke up a pass in the back of the end zone. With Jackson White back at quarterback, Mount Ida responded by driving the length of the field.
Phimvongsa supplied the biggest gain, taking a third-down pitch deep into Hector territory. Dorrell finished with a 10-yard touchdown run, breaking tackles on his way into the end zone with 3:23 left in the first quarter. Brooks then evaded defenders on the two-point run for an 8-0 lead.
Hector threatened again in the second quarter, converting fourth-and-10 with a pass to set up first-and-goal at the 8. Eli Porter stopped the next run, and Hayden Mosher and Phimvongsa helped drive the Wildcats backward on the following play. On fourth-and-goal from the 12, Phimvongsa knocked away a pass to preserve the shutout.
Mount Ida overcame a block-in-the-back penalty that erased an apparent Dorrell touchdown on its next possession. Jake Gaston contributed several runs, including a third-down conversion, before Brooks took a pitch right and worked through his blockers for a 12-yard touchdown with 1:01 left in the half. Dorrell powered in the two-point conversion for a 16-0 advantage.
The Lions scored on their first three possessions of the second half. Phimvongsa broke loose into Hector territory on the opening drive, and Dorrell converted a third down before Brooks swept outside for his 19-yard touchdown. Buck Miller’s extra point made it 23-0.
Miller then caught Hector by surprise with an onside kick, and Dorrell recovered it just beyond the required 10 yards. Mount Ida lost ground on a mishandled pitch but retained possession. Brooks followed with the screen-pass touchdown, cutting through traffic and working back across the field to finish the play. The extra point missed, leaving the Lions ahead 29-0.
Eli McCullough’s third-down tackle for loss and another Phimvongsa pass breakup stopped Hector’s next series. Dorrell kept the ensuing drive alive with a fourth-and-three conversion, and Phimvongsa later burst through the middle for the final touchdown. The successful extra point made it 36-0 and brought on the running clock in the third quarter.
Aaron Gregory recovered a fourth-quarter fumble after Hector mishandled a snap. The Lions later lost a pitch themselves, but their defense protected the shutout. Gregory and Xander Cox combined on the final fourth-down stop, and Mount Ida let the remaining time expire. The Lions visit Magnet Cove on Oct. 23.
