LITTLE ROCK — Zamarion McDonald scored on an 11-yard run with 1:08 remaining, and Christopher Oliver added a defensive touchdown 16.5 seconds later as Mills defeated Greenbrier 48-35 Friday night.

McDonald rushed for three touchdowns, including the score that broke a 35-35 tie. Kenneth “KJ” Gilcreast threw two touchdown passes to Ja’Meion Reese, scored on a fourth-down keeper and ran for a two-point conversion. Mills improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the 5A Central; Greenbrier fell to 3-4 and 1-3.

The Comets led 20-14 at halftime, fell behind early in the third quarter and entered the fourth tied 28-28. Greenbrier kept answering through Ashyr Crow, who scored twice on third-quarter runs, and Trendon Moseley, who caught two touchdown passes from Tyler Hart.

Mills needed two fourth-down conversions on the possession that produced its first fourth-quarter touchdown. An encroachment penalty extended the drive on fourth-and-short. Gilcreast then found Reese for a 50-yard gain. Later, with Mills backed up to the 16, Reese caught a 15-yard pass to put the ball at the 1. Gilcreast kept it on fourth-and-goal, and the extra point gave Mills a 35-28 lead.

Greenbrier answered on third down when Hart found Moseley, who made a one-handed catch and crossed the field for a touchdown with 2:11 left. Ace Newland handled a high snap on the extra point, allowing Ethan Rhodes to tie the game at 35.

Gilcreast completed a pass to Reese on Mills’ next possession, then hit Daking Warren on an out route. Warren reached the Greenbrier 20 before a horse-collar tackle added penalty yardage. McDonald finished the drive from the 11, and the extra point restored Mills’ seven-point lead.

Oliver scored on Greenbrier’s next series. A penalty moved the extra-point attempt back, and the kick missed, leaving Mills ahead by 13 with 51.5 seconds remaining. Madison Milton intercepted a pass on the Panthers’ final possession, and Mills finished in victory formation.

McDonald opened the scoring late in the first quarter. After Greenbrier tied it 7-7, Reese caught two second-quarter touchdown passes, the second coming from the 11 after a Gilcreast run. Moseley’s 41-yard touchdown catch cut Mills’ lead to 20-14 before halftime.

A short Mills punt gave Greenbrier an opportunity early in the third quarter, and Crow’s touchdown run put the Panthers ahead 21-20. McDonald answered with an 18-yard touchdown run, and Gilcreast’s two-point run made it 28-21. Crow then broke a 38-yard scoring run on third-and-six, and Rhodes’ kick tied it again.
