Austin-Phillip Lewis and Lamarion Bradley scored three touchdowns apiece as Benton overcame five turnovers to defeat El Dorado 49-28 Friday night at Everett Field at Panther Stadium.
Bradley rushed for 190 yards on 22 carries, according to the broadcast, and Lewis supplied an 89-yard kickoff return among his three scores. The Panthers also scored on defense when Baylor Dyson recovered a fourth-quarter fumble in the end zone, turning a seven-point lead into a 35-21 advantage.
Benton improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the 6A-East. El Dorado fell to 4-3 and 1-3 despite three rushing touchdowns by Jaylon Dunn.
A wind-shortened, 2-yard punt gave Benton possession at the El Dorado 40 in the first quarter. Lewis took a short flip from Chase Cobb, broke through a tackle and covered the distance on the next play. Gabe Wilbur’s extra point made it 7-0 with 7:51 remaining.
The Wildcats answered with two touchdowns after interceptions. Dunn scored from the 4 with 2:28 left in the first quarter, then powered in from the 1 on fourth-and-goal with 10 minutes remaining in the second. Eric Flores added both extra points for a 14-7 El Dorado lead.
Lewis erased that advantage on the ensuing kickoff. He fielded the ball at the Benton 11, got outside and raced 89 yards for the tying touchdown with 9:47 left in the half.
Benton took the lead for good after stopping El Dorado on fourth down. Bradley finished the ensuing 68-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining. Cobb then directed an 80-yard possession in the closing minute, finding Lewis for an 11-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left. Wilbur’s kick sent the Panthers into halftime ahead 28-14.
El Dorado stayed close in the third quarter. After intercepting Cobb in the end zone, the Wildcats traveled 92 yards in four plays. Dunn broke a 76-yard run before Jaxon White caught him at the Benton 4, then scored from there to trim the margin to 28-21 with 5:08 left.
Another Benton turnover, a fumble recovered by Robert Smith deep in El Dorado territory, gave the Wildcats a chance to tie in the fourth quarter. Instead, Ayden Bateman stripped Gavin Jacobs on a third-down sack, and Dyson recovered in the end zone. Wilbur’s kick restored the two-touchdown cushion.
Bradley stretched the lead to 42-21 with a 44-yard touchdown run. El Dorado answered when Jacobs connected with Justin Hammett for a 60-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14 with 6:15 remaining.
The Wildcats’ onside kick was touched before traveling 10 yards, giving Benton possession near midfield. Bradley finished the 49-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 2:53 left.
White intercepted a pass on El Dorado’s next possession, and Bradley added a 36-yard run before Benton ran out the clock. Wilbur finished with seven extra points.
