CLASS 6A GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 2 Shiloh Christian (2-1) at No. 1 GREENWOOD (3-0)

Greenwood has won 8 of the past 11 meetings with Shiloh Christian, including a come-from-behind 28-17 victory last year in the regular season, and 61-35 in the Class 6A state championship game.

Shiloh Christian was sharp last week in every facet, blasting Bethany, Okla., 72-0. Zane Sluyter returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and he caught 6 passes for 136 yards and another score. Chandler Kemp (4-77 receiving, TD) and Westin Huckabee (5-60, TD) contributed as pass-catchers. QB Cole Creighton completed 13 of 15 passes for 284 yards and 3 TDs. Colton Miller (6 tackles against Bethany), Tate Barnard (6 stops) and Zander Salter (5 tackles) sparked the Saints to their first shutout since 2023. Shiloh Christian hopes to get an injured starting offensive lineman back, but 2 of their starters are expected to miss the game.

Greenwood scored the eventual winning touchdown and 2-point conversion with 15 seconds left against Class 7A No. 5 Bentonville West for a 43-42 victory. It was the Bulldogs’ 29th consecutive victory. Greenwood all-state QB and Central Florida commit Kane Archer completed 23 of 29 passes for 321 yards and 2 TDs, and he rushed 20 times for 116 yards and 3 scores, along with the game-winning conversion. Standout sophomore receiver Braxton Canada delivered two big plays, including a 48-yard completion to extend the winning drive.

“You have to figure out how to have success in the running game and sustain drives while adding a few explosive plays,” second-year Shiloh Christian Coach Tucker Barnard says. “Defensively, you have to find a way to win against the perimeter pass game and contain the QB at the same time.”

“Offensively, they are a complete team,” Greenwood Coach Chris Young says. “They can run the ball, throw the ball, and their QB is a dual-threat. Three really good receivers. Defensively, they are a problem; they look to create chaos and get you behind the chains, which we don’t like to do.”

This game likely decides the 6A West conference title and No. 1 playoff seed, meaning that a potential second meeting would happen again in December in Little Rock. Greenwood may be slightly healthier heading into this week, which could give the Bulldogs their 72nd consecutive victory inside Smith-Robinson Stadium.

LAST WEEK

Hootens.com correctly picked 4 of 6 games (67 percent) involving Class 6A teams. Hootens.com is 39 of 46 (85 percent) on the season.

6A EAST

No. 4 MARION (2-1) at No. 10 Sylvan Hills (3-0): Marion leads the all-time series with Sylvan Hills 7-3, including the past 2 seasons by a combined 106-29.

Sylvan Hills is the surprise team of Class 6A after snapping a 20-game losing streak in the opener and outscoring its opponents by a combined 151-68 in its 3-0 start under first-year Coach Mark Kelley. The Bears recorded the school’s first shutout since 2021 in a 50-0 rout of Russellville 2 weeks ago. Sylvan Hills limited Russellville to 29 total yards, while QB Tyler Hampton (267 passing, 4 TDs) connected with Tyler Blakely (4-146-2) and Ryan Parham (3-67-1). Isaiah Howell ran 4 times for 60 yards and 2 TDs.

Marion is 2-1 or better for the fourth consecutive season, and the Patriots competed well 2 weeks ago in a 19-0 home loss to Class 7A Conway. It was 6-0 at halftime and 12-0 after 3 quarters. The Patriots twice held Conway to field goals when the Wampus Cats drove inside the 10 as defensive end Ryan Blackwell (5 tackles and 1 tackle for loss), linebacker Chris Byrd (4 stops, 2 TFL) and Zadean Wilson (4 stops) produced big nights for the Marion defense. Marion was 5 for 13 on third downs against Conway, but lost the turnover battle 2-0.

The winner gets an edge in playoff seeding: Marion’s defense makes a play late to notch a crucial road conference victory.

No. 3 BENTON (1-1) at No. 7 Jonesboro (1-2): Benton has won 4 consecutive against Jonesboro, including 48-35 last season, and 3 playoff wins between 2016 and 2019.

Jonesboro rallied 2 weeks ago to top DeSoto Central (Miss.) 49-34. Hurricane all-conference QB Asa Myers completed 13 of 19 passes against DeSoto for 299 yards and 4 TDs, while tailback T.J. Brown (11-126 rushing, 3 TDs) sparked the ground game. Five Jonesboro receivers caught passes, led by Kameron Davis (5-120 receiving, 2 TDs). Seniors Noah Wendel (15 tackles against DeSoto Central), Jaques Jordan (14 stops), and Jahvon Hare (12 tackles) were active defensively.

Benton has bounced back from its season-opening loss to Class 7A Bryant with a good first half at North Little Rock 2 weeks ago (led 24-7 when the game was called after a spectator was hit with a stray bullet fired from outside the stadium), and a 31-14 home victory last week over 3-time defending Class 5A state champion Little Rock Parkview. The Panthers led 28-0 at halftime, but the Patriots trimmed the lead to 28-14 late in the third period. Benton pulled off a lengthy field-goal march to set the final score. Benton outgained Parkview 325-190 behind 2-time senior all-state QB Drew Davis’s 248 passing yards, including 4 completions to Will Carter for 90 yards. It was Carter’s first game back in 2025 from injury.

This could turn into a high-scoring game with both teams possessing high-octane offenses, and Benton seems to be getting starters back every week from injury

NR LR Catholic (1-2) at No. 6 EL DORADO (2-1): Little Rock Catholic has won 2 of the past 3 meetings with El Dorado, including 26-6 last fall. Catholic lost last week to North Little Rock 42-13 despite getting TDs from Phillips Blair and Hunter Markham. The Rockets trailed by 1 point at halftime, but did not score in the second half, while allowing more than 300 rushing yards for the game.

El Dorado, off a bye week, enters on a 2-game winning streak after beating Class 5A Texarkana 48-14. The Wildcats led 35-0 at halftime as tailback Jeremy Samuels rushed 12 times for 118 yards and Jeremiah Warner (11-90 rushing, TD). Jaylon Dunn added a 51-yard TD run; Marcevious Ishamel returned an interception 70 yards for a TD.

These have been 2 of the stronger defenses in 6A the past few years, but El Dorado averages almost 300 yards rushing per game, and that could boost the Wildcats to victory this week.

No. 8 SHERIDAN (1-2) at NR W. Memphis (0-3): West Memphis has won 3 of the 5 meetings with Sheridan all time, but the Yellowjackets rolled the Blue Devils 62-14 last fall and West Memphis fell to 0-3 after last week’s 51-0 loss to Class 7A Little Rock Christian. It was the first Blue Devils shutout loss since 2021. The Blue Devils have gotten good play from OL Dallan Harris and TB Carlos Williams, while Derreyon Key has performed well for the defense.

Sheridan enters off an 84-40 loss 2 weeks ago at Class 7A Rogers, trailing 63-27 at halftime. The Yellowjackets get big plays from QB Dax McMellon, tailback Zay Stephens, and a host of receivers, including Dylan Smith and Wylie DePriest.

The loser of this game faces an uphill battle to qualify for the playoffs. Sheridan’s big-play ability gives the visitors the edge in Crittenden County.

6A WEST

No. 2 Shiloh Christian (2-1) at No. 1 GREENWOOD (3-0): See Class 6A Game of the Week.

NR FS Southside (3-0) at No. 5 MOUNTAIN HOME (3-0): Mountain Home downed Fort Smith Southside last fall 50-35. Southside scored TDs on the game’s first two possessions, and then again on the first drive of the second period, to take a 21-0 lead en route to a 35-20 victory at Class 7A Little Rock Southwest. Mavericks QB Blake Forsgren (275 passing, 32 rushing), 2-way stalwart Peyton Zimmerman (8-123 receiving; threw a 39-yard TD pass), and Wilson Key (4-111 receiving) led the Southside offense.

Mountain Home (3-0 for 2nd consecutive season) rolled Rolla (Mo.) 37-10 last Thursday evening behind senior all-state performer Barrett Miller’s 307 rushing yards, a new Mountain Home single-game rushing record. Miller scored 4 TDs. The Bombers led 7-0 after a quarter, 21-3 at halftime, and 34-3 after 3 quarters. Southside’s offense has improved, but the Mavericks allowed more than 200 rushing yards last week to LR Southwest, and Mountain Home’s bread and butter is running the football.

NR Siloam Springs (2-1) at No. 9 LAKE HAMILTON (1-2): Lake Hamilton has won the past 5 meetings with Siloam Springs by a combined 267-74.

Siloam Springs’ 2 home wins are their first since 2021. Siloam pounded Pea Ridge behind freshman QB Titus Benson‘s 4 TD passes. The Panthers amassed 435 yards, highlighted by Benson’s 184 passing yards and senior TB Mason Short’s 159 rushing yards. Benson completed 2 TD passes to his brother, Boaz Benson. Stewart Schwaniger and Jack O’Brien caught the others. Fredy Renderos returned an interception 15 yards for a TD, while Short rushed 71 yards for a score.

Lake Hamilton led Class 4A Arkadelphia 21-15 at halftime 2 weeks ago, and 28-22 after 3 quarters, but the Badgers scored all 14 fourth-quarter points to claim a 36-28 victory. The Wolves got 103 yards rushing and 2 TDs from senior running back Coy Autry, while J.J. Johnson added 36 yards on 7 carries. Lake Hamilton rushed 40 times for 190 yards (4.8 yards per carry). Two Lake Hamilton QBs combined to complete 9 of 25 passes for 119 yards and a TD with 2 interceptions. Senior Carson Jackson caught 6 passes for 105 yards and a TD. Sophomore Blaine Sears led the defense with 17 tackles; Jorden Amos finished with 10.

The loser faces an uphill battle to make the playoffs, but the home field and Lake Hamilton’s strong running game lifts the Wolves.

NR Russellville (0-3) at NR VAN BUREN (1-2): This series dates back to 1909 with Russellville owning a 34-31-5 advantage after winning 31-23 in 2024.

Russellville is 0-3 for the first time since 2022, and for the third time since 2001 after losing 50-0 2 weeks ago at Sylvan Hills. Sylvan Hills outgained Russellville 494-29, and the Bears led 21-0 after the first quarter, 42-0 at halftime, and 50-0 after 3 quarters. Sylvan Hills won the turnover battle 3-0. Marcellus Olson-Patton passed for 25 yards, while Sam Callahan rushed for 10 yards to lead the Cyclones offense.

Van Buren lost 48-34 at Class 5A Greenbrier 2 weeks ago. The Pointers trailed 27-3 after a quarter, 34-17 at halftime, but got within 41-31 after 3 quarters. Greenbrier outgained Van Buren 601-474, including 320 yards rushing and 281 passing. Van Buren rushed for 255 and passed for 219. Junior QB Hayden Williford completed 14 of 23 passes for 160 yards and a TD; senior Tristan Ray completed 6 of 13 passes for 59 yards and a score. Sophomore tailback Hayden Christenberry (31-194 rushing, TD; 2-35 receiving, TD) led the rushers. Senior WR Austin Riggs collected 10 passes for 119 yards and a TD. Junior Jaxson Silvers (9 tackles against Greenbrier), senior Jace Ponder (6 stops), and sophomore Jalen Brown (4 tackles) led the Pointers defense.

The winner picks up a key head-to-head tiebreaker in the race for the playoffs, and Van Buren’s offense has had a better start to the season.
