HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 16 McGehee (5-4, 4-2) at No. 9 FORDYCE (8-1, 5-1): Everything comes down to the final week in the wild 8-3A. The conference championship is on the line, and playoff seeding remains wide open depending on who wins and who falls short. McGehee enters the matchup riding the momentum of a 50-22 win over Dumas, bouncing back strong after a 1-point loss to Palestine-Wheatley the week before. The Owls’ offense gained 362 total yards, with 276 of those coming on the ground, as they took the lead in the second quarter and never looked back. Amari Norman (8-101 rushing, 2 TDs), Kenny Watts (5-62 rushing, 2 TDs), Ashton Humphries (11-56 rushing, 2 TDs) and Jacorrian Love (10-45 rushing) were all responsible for the rushing yards. Their 50-point performance marked the second time this season they have scored 50 or more, but it was the first 50-point output in conference. Fordyce edged out rival Rison in a close battle, extending their win streak to 2. The Redbugs have now outscored their opponents 312-76, with their defense continuing to dominate. They’ve recorded 4 shutouts this season and are allowing 9.6 points per game in conference play. Much like last year’s 30-10 regular-season victory over Fordyce, this matchup could produce a similar outcome as the Redbugs begin to gear up for the postseason. Still, in the unpredictable 8-3A, anything can happen.
1-3A
No. 2 MANSFIELD (9-0, 6-0) at West Fork (1-8, 1-5): Mansfield aims for an undefeated regular season to secure the outright No. 1 seed, along with home-field advantage with a win this week. Last Friday night was a big for the Tigers, who got standout performances from Jubal Parks (4-6 passing, 120 yards, 2 TDs; 93 rushing yards, 2 TDs), Andrew Burton (8-148 rushing, 2 TDs), and Caiden Whittaker (1-44 receiving, TD). Zander Walters (14 tackles) also played a key role in last week’s win. West Fork fell to Hackett and now faces a must-win situation to keep its faint playoff hopes alive. Sophomore Will Preston (193 all-purpose yards; 141 rushing, 2 TDs) continued to shine against Hackett, but turnovers once again proved costly for the Tigers.
No. 5 CHARLESTON (8-1, 5-1) at Greenland (2-7, 2-4): Charleston looks to close out the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the 1-3A standings, its only loss coming earlier in the year to Mansfield. The Tigers picked up a big win over Booneville to take control of that second seed, led by standout performances from Carter Little (8-13 passing, 130 yards, 1 TD; 1 rushing TD), Bryson Wibbing (84-yard kickoff return), Maddix Terry (4-43 receiving; 8 tackles, 1 sack), and Finn Schmalz (19 tackles). Greenland dropped its fourth consecutive conference game, falling to No. 2 Mansfield. It faces a challenging matchup against No. 5 Charleston, a team that has endured two challenging games in successive weeks. Greenland needs a win this week to ensure a playoff spot, but can still get in if it loses with other scenarios that play out.
Lavaca (4-5, 2-4) at No. 12 BOONEVILLE (5-4, 4-2): Lavaca fell to Cedarville, marking its fourth conference loss in a row after opening conference play with a 2-0 start. The Golden Arrows face a tough challenge against No. 12 Booneville, a team looking to regain momentum with the postseason fast approaching. Lavaca has a chance to sneak into the playoffs, but its fate hinges on how the rest of the conference shakes out this week. Booneville dropped another conference matchup to No. 5 Charleston, putting their hopes for the No. 2 seed out of reach. But the Bearcats still have a strong chance to secure the third seed. There were some bright spots last week, including a solid performance from Hunter Warren (21-86 rushing) and a defensive effort that held Charleston to 190 total yards.
Cedarville (2-7, 1-5) at HACKETT (5-4, 3-3): Cedarville picked up its first conference win, beating Lavaca to keep its playoff hopes alive in what has become a must-win stretch for the Pirates. A powerful ground attack fueled Hackett last Friday, led by Daniel Ramirez (27-164 rushing, 1 TD) and Dakota Kattich (13-78 rushing, 1 TD). Hackett looks to secure the No. 4 seed with another victory this week. The Hornets came ready to play Friday night, highlighted by standout offensive performances from Matthew Garner (15-19 passing, 266 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT), Austin Williams (5-56 rushing, 1 TD; 7-128 receiving, 1 TD; 1 INT), and Evan Griffin (4-97 receiving, 1 TD; 4 tackles, 1 pick-six). Hackett held West Fork to 6 points, anchored by Tomas Ruiz (5 solo tackles, TFL, 1 INT; 6-47 rushing, 1 TD), Ryan Kirk (6 tackles, 2 sacks), Colin Cooper (5 tackles, 2 sacks), and Brayden Long (4 tackles, 2 TFLs, INT).
2-3A
No. 13 Quitman (7-2, 4-2) at No. 1 SALEM (9-0, 6-0): Quitman aims to secure a prime playoff position in the 2-3 range with a win; a loss drops it to fourth. The Tigers dominated in all phases Friday night, delivering a 75-21 victory over Mountain View. They now face their toughest test, hosting No. 1 Salem, which enters off a hard-fought 12-7 win over No. 7 Mayflower. Salem is in position to close out the season undefeated and secure the No. 1 seed outright, along with home-field advantage, with a win this week. Jackson Taylor (4-8 passing, 65 yards, 1 TD; 8-19 rushing), Kaden Brink (14-88 rushing), and Ethan Birmingham (8-37 rushing, 1 TD) led Salem.
No. 10 Atkins (8-1, 5-1) at No. 7 MAYFLOWER (8-1, 5-1): This matchup determines second place in this tough conference; both teams enter the game with 1 loss each, and both of those defeats came against No. 1 Salem, the defending state champions Atkins extended its winning streak to 3 with a home victory over Yellville-Summit Friday night. The Red Devils’ offense averages 41 points per game, as they prepare for another exciting matchup this week, a game that could mirror last year’s 29-22 victory. Mayflower’s defense, which yielded 5 points per game, allowed 12 points —the most against the Eagles this season.
Mountain View (3-6, 2-4) at MELBOURNE (5-4, 2-4): The winner secures the fifth playoff spot, making it a win-or-go-home scenario for both teams. Mountain View fell to No. 15 Quitman, dropping its fourth conference game. The Yellowjackets yielded 70 points for the second consecutive week as they prepare for a tough matchup against Melbourne. Melbourne has found its stride, winning 2 consecutive conference games after starting 0-4 in conference. The Bearkatz offense shined in their victory over Episcopal, led by standout performances from Abe Cooper (10-13 passing, 218 yards, 2 TDs; 5-56 rushing, 1 TD), Maddux Lawrence (6-82 rushing, 2 TDs), Ty Gillihan (5-97, 1 TD), Mason Wren (3-54, 1 TD), and Peyton Elms (3-93 receiving, 1 TD). Melbourne held Episcopal to 8 points, an effort anchored by Garrett Buchanan (6 tackles, 1 TFL), Esteban Ventura (4 tackles), and Brycen Young (4 tackles, 1 sack).
YELLVILLE-SUMMIT (0-9, 0-6) at Episcopal (0-9, 0-6): Both teams are looking to finish the season strong, even though playoff hopes are no longer within reach. Yellville-Summit fell to Atkins Friday night but still showed some bright spots. On offense, Wyatt Gilley (16-35 passing, 221 yards), Kobyn Hubbard (6-136 receiving), and Noah Cantrall (4-33 receiving; 2-4 rushing, 1 TD) stood out, while on defense Ethan McCalla (4 tackles, 1 FF), Eli Gerth (3 tackles), and Brendan Arki (3 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 3 QB hurries) made key contributions. Episcopal fell to Melbourne Friday night but still had some bright spots to build on. Senior QB Turner Harbour (1 rushing TD) scored his 18th touchdown of the season, Senior LB Ford Gill (6 tackles) surpassed 75 total tackles for the year, and Senior DE Clark Blackmon recorded his fifth tackle for loss of the season.
3-3A
No. 4 RIVERCREST (7-2, 6-0) at Piggott (0-9, 0-6): Rivercrest needs a win to finish undefeated in conference, along with the outright No. 1 seed and home-field advantage. Jayden Ralph (7-9 passing, 136 yards, 3 TDs) and Buddah Harris (5-105 receiving, 2 TDs, 1 punt return TD led Rivercrest over Manila). Winless Piggott is in an unenviable situation of trying to claim a win against one of the state’s top teams.
Harrisburg (3-6, 3-3) at No. 11 NEWPORT (7-2, 5-1): Harrisburg still has a chance to make the playoffs as a four seed, but a loss leaves its fate in the hands of other results around the conference. The Hornets fell to No. 16 Walnut Ridge last week and it doesn’t get easier. Jayvin Thompson (19-139 rushing, 2 TDs) and Grayson Harkey (5-18 rushing; 1-30 receiving, 1 TD) turned in strong performances, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Walnut Ridge’s powerful rushing attack. Newport has an opportunity to lock up a No. 2 seed as the playoffs approach. The Greyhounds took down Hoxie last week behind a breakout performance from fill-in QB Semaj Morgan (3-4 passing, 29 yards; 5-118 rushing, 2 TDs). Morgan stepped in during the second quarter after an injury to the starter and completely took over the game. Tre Greer (12-160 rushing, 2 TDs) powered the offense; Jesseyn Russell (11 tackles) and Luke Sampson (11 tackles) anchored the defense.
No. 14 WALNUT RIDGE (6-3, 4-2) at Hoxie (3-6, 2-4): Walnut Ridge locks up the No. 3 spot with a win, but a loss could drop it as low as fifth, depending on how other games play out. The Bobcats were led by Jace Blake (7-179 rushing, 5 TDs) in last week’s win over Harrisburg. He accounted for 5 of the team’s 7 touchdowns. Hoxie finds itself in a must-win situation this week, as a loss ends its season. The Mustangs fell to Newport on Friday night but showed promising flashes in the run game behind Mark Slaughter (19-94 rushing) and Robert Martinez (17-87 rushing, 1 TD).
Manila (1-8, 0-5) at OSCEOLA (3-6, 3-3): Manila shoots for its first conference win, but its playoff hopes are now out of reach. Brody Morris (19-106 rushing, 1 TD) led the Lions, but Rivercrest’s balanced offensive attack proved too much to handle. Osceola is aiming to secure the No. 4 seed with a win and could still have a chance depending on how other results unfold. Last week, the Seminoles put together one of their most complete performances of the season, and look to build on that effort here.
4-3A
Danville (3-6, 2-4) at No. 6 GLEN ROSE (8-1, 6-0): Danville still has playoff hopes, but it faces a major challenge this week at Glen Rose. The Little Johns handled business last week against Two Rivers, putting together a strong all-around performance. Lane Schoby (11 tackles) and Will Wilson (6 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception) led the defense; the offense piled up 426 total yards. Glen Rose secured the No. 1 seed outright and is now setting its sights on finishing conference play undefeated. The Beavers’ offense led by Gage Hood (14-26 passing, 278 yards, 3 TDs; 9-40 rushing) and Damien Stevens (6-143 receiving, 3 TDs). Glen Rose continued its dominant defensive play, anchored by Austin Moreland (9 tackles, 2 QB hurries, 1 TFL), Ace Best (8 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack), and Jon Vann (7 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 interception).
No. 18 CUTTER MORNING STAR (6-3, 4-2) at Jessieville (3-6, 3-3): Cutter Morning Star has a chance to finish as high as second or as low as fourth, depending on how other games play out. The Tigers made a statement with a big win over Magnet Cove, led by standout performances from Jacob Smith (20-31 passing, 326 yards, 5 TDs), Jakavin Stegall (23-237 rushing, 2 TDs), and Santiago Delrio (6-43 rushing, 2 TDs). Jessieville can secure fifth place with a win this week, while a loss could create complications depending on other results. The Lions picked up their third conference victory Friday, defeating Perryville behind a dominant performance from Jacob Graves (21-35 passing, 246 yards, 1 TD; 17-121 rushing, 4 TDs, 1 fumble), who accounted for all five of Jessieville’s touchdowns in the win.
Perryville (2-7, 1-5) at No. 19 MAGNET COVE (6-3, 4-2): Perryville fell to Jessieville and out of the playoff race last Friday Night and are left playing for pride on the road against a tough Magnet Cove team. Magnet Cove can finish as high as second or as low as fourth, depending on how other games unfold. Magnet Cove looks to bounce back this week after a tough road loss to Cutter Morning Star.
No. 20 PARIS (6-3, 4-2) at Two Rivers (1-8, 0-6): Paris can finish as high as second or as low as fourth, depending on how other games play out. Paris showed bright spots from Alex Wells (3-98 receiving) and Dmitri Capo (2-43 receiving). It looks to bounce back against Two Rivers, which is winless in conference. Two Rivers fell out of playoff contention with its loss to Danville, but there were solid efforts from Rafeal Navarette (11-91 rushing; 1-26 receiving) and Drake Hess (16-69 rushing, 1 TD; 11 tackles).
7-3A
Horatio (1-7, 1-5) at No. 4 BISMARCK (8-1, 6-0): Horatio fell to Harmony Grove OC, ending any playoff hopes and now faces the fourth-ranked team in 3A. Bismarck eyes an undefeated conference season, and the No. 1 seed outright, along with home-field advantage, with a win this week. The Lions beat Centerpoint last week and have been nearly unstoppable since their lone early-season loss.
No. 9 SMACKOVER (8-1, 5-1) at Fouke (6-3, 3-3): Smackover looks to secure the No. 2 seed Friday as it travels to face Fouke. Smackover got the job done last week against Prescott behind strong performances from Mitchell Polk (15-18 passing, 334 yards, 5 TDs), Joe Brown (20-135 rushing, 1 TD), and Juice Robinson (7-166 receiving, 2 TDs; 10 tackles, 3 TFLs). Fouke has positioned itself to finish anywhere from fourth to fifth, depending on how the rest of the conference plays out. Fouke was led by Cody Heflin (109 yards passing, 2 TDs; 5-86 rushing, 1 TD), Joshua Scoggins (8-92 rushing, 3 TDs; 64-yard kickoff return for a TD), Colton Martin (fumble recovery for a TD), and Hayden Shermer (7-7 PATs, 1-1 FG, 34 yards) in its win last week.
Centerpoint (4-5, 3-3) at No. 14 PRESCOTT (6-3, 4-2): Centerpoint could finish anywhere from third to fifth in conference, depending on how the rest of the week plays out. Last week’s loss to Bismarck was its third of the season, and now faces a Prescott team that has struggled over the past 2 weeks, losing by a combined score of 90-13 after starting the season 4-0 in conference play. The winner of this matchup could secure third place, but the loser could drop to fourth or fifth in the standings.
Parker’s Chapel (0-9, 0-6) at HARMONY GROVE OC (2-7, 2-4): Parker’s Chapel aims for its first win as it is eliminated from playoff contention. The Panthers fell 60-12 to Fouke last week, and takes on Harmony Grove OC, a team still fighting for a chance at the fifth playoff spot if results go their way. Harmony Grove OC beat Horatio last week, highlighted by standout performances from Landen Berends (13 tackles, 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery), Matthew Priddy (15 tackles), Dannon Vint (12 tackles), Damien Burns (2 rushing TDs), and Kieundre Billingly (8-183 rushing, 2 TDs).
8-3A
No. 16 McGehee (5-4, 4-2) at No. 9 FORDYCE (8-1, 5-1): See Game of the Week, above.
Drew Central (4-5, 3-3) at No. 17 DUMAS (5-4, 4-2): Just about anything is possible in the 8-3A, where Drew Central could finish anywhere from second to fifth in the conference, and Dumas could land between second and fourth. Drew Central beat Palestine-Wheatley last week and now heads on the road to face Dumas. The Bobcats are looking to bounce back after a tough loss to McGehee, but they showed offensive efficiency behind Kyle Young (18-37 passing, 187 yards, 3 TDs), Rashad Moore (13-64 rushing), and Marcus Kilgore Jr. (7-104 receiving, 1 TD).
LAKESIDE LAKE VILLAGE (4-5, 2-4) at Palestine Wheatley (5-4, 2-4): Anything is possible in the 8-3A, where Lakeside Lake Village and Palestine-Wheatley could finish anywhere from fourth to fifth in the conference, but is a must-win for both teams. Lakeside Lake Village fell last Friday to Barton after consecutive upset wins. Palestine-Wheatley lost to Drew Central after a big win the previous week, making this an unpredictable matchup.
Rison (3-5, 2-4) at BARTON (4-5, 2-4): Rison and Barton could finish anywhere from fourth to fifth in the conference. Rison fell short of arch-rival Fordyce and now faces a Barton team that started 0-4 but has won its past 2 games, putting themselves back in the 8-3A Playoff race. The Bears beat Lakeside Lake Village with big-time performances from Cameron Otey (11-74 rushing; 8 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 Sack, 1 FF) and Calvin Jones (4-108 rushing, 2 TDs; 6 tackles).
