HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
7-3A (1) No. 3 BISMARCK (11-1) at 1-3A (1) No. 2 Mansfield (11-0): This is a heavyweight quarterfinal matchup as these teams face off for the second time this season. Their first meeting ended in a 34-28 overtime win for Mansfield, and the Tigers know how tough it is to beat a good team twice in a season. Bismarck enters with 11 consecutive victories under its belt, and the Lions look every bit as dangerous as they did at this point last year when they reached the state-title game against Salem. Bismarck enters off a 35-12 second-round win over McGehee, jumping out to a 20-0 halftime lead and not looking back. Mansfield, meanwhile, dominated Walnut Ridge 51-22 after a first-round bye, looking fresh and focused. This should be another tight battle, but it’s hard to beat a good team twice. I expect Bismarck to get its revenge and move on to the semifinals, where another big rematch may be waiting.
TOP OF THE BRACKET
7-3A (1) No. 3 BISMARCK (11-1) at 1-3A (1) No. 2 Mansfield (11-0): See Game of the Week
3-3A (4) No. 8 Osceola (6-6) at 2-3A (1) No. 1 SALEM (11-0): Osceola has found its rhythm at the perfect time, but the Seminoles will need their best football Friday night as they travel to face the defending 3A state champions. Osceola looked strong once again last week, earning a 49-21 win over Drew Central. The Seminoles have been red hot over the past 4 weeks and hope to carry that momentum into their biggest test yet. Salem, meanwhile, defeated a tough Newport squad 40-20. Kaden Brink delivered 2 fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns as the Greyhounds pulled away after a back-and-forth battle. Salem, winners of 20 consecutive games dating back to last fall, must stay locked in to keep its dream of a repeat championship.
BOTTOM OF THE BRACKET
1-3A (3) No. 7 Booneville (8-4) at 4-3A (1) No. 4 GLEN ROSE (11-1): Booneville stunned the 3A bracket with a 41-13 win over a Rivercrest team that was playing after a first-round bye and ranked No. 3 in 3A. Booneville came in with the same plan it used in the first round — running the football — and the Bearcats piled up 390 rushing yards, with Hunter Warren (21-173, 3 TDs) and Brody Chambers (17-143) combining for 316. Glen Rose’s defense stepped up in a 19-9 win over Atkins, with big performances from Ace Best (8 tackles, 1 TFL) and Noah Draper (6 tackles, 1 QBH, 1 INT). The offense was led by Gage Hood (13-18 passing, 126 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT; 26-96 rushing, 1 TD) and Darrin Bowdle (19-110 rushing, 1 TD). This quarterfinal matchup marks the third meeting between the programs, with Glen Rose winning the first 2.
2-3A (2) No. 5 MAYFLOWER (11-1) at 8-3A (1) No. 6 Fordyce (11-1): Mayflower continues to dominate defensively, yielding 7 points in its second-round win, and it has allowed fewer than 5.0 points per game for the season. The Eagles were firing on all cylinders as Carter Smith (7-11 passing, 69 yards, 2 TDs), Trey Williamson (25-193 rushing, 2 TDs), Cade Cowdery (11-105 rushing), Kam Willis (5-18 rushing, 1 TD; 2-32 receiving, 1 TD), and Tanner Reed (4-30 receiving, 1 TD) all delivered big performances as Mayflower stacked up 385 offensive yards. The Eagles take on a Fordyce team that suffered a road loss to Lakeside Lake Village midway in the season, but has been dominant at home, making this matchup another major test for Mayflower. Fordyce is fresh off an overtime thriller against Charleston, but Mayflower might have the best defense in all of 3A.
