Bismarck outlasts Smackover in overtime

Bismarck 33, Smackover 27 (OT)
SMACKOVER — Bismarck stopped Smackover on its first overtime possession, then covered 10 yards in two rushing plays to escape Buckaroo Stadium with a 33-27 victory Friday, Oct. 2.
The Lions won their fourth consecutive game and handed Smackover its first loss, leaving both teams 4-1. The finish followed a fourth-quarter exchange of touchdowns and an unsuccessful Bismarck fake field goal on the final play of regulation.
Smackover struck first after Connor Knight blocked a punt and Carter Walker recovered at the Bismarck 2. Trason Parlor scored on a 1-yard keeper with 9:40 left in the first quarter. The Buckaroos tried for two following an offside penalty, but Knight was stopped short.
Bismarck answered with a 49-yard touchdown pass on a fake punt at the 7:40 mark. The extra point put the Lions ahead 7-6, and a 6-yard touchdown run and another successful kick made it 14-6 with one minute left in the quarter.
Jackson Camacho intercepted a pass near midfield late in the second quarter, giving Smackover another chance before halftime. Parlor finished the ensuing possession with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Branton Nugent as time expired. The two-point attempt failed, leaving Bismarck ahead 14-12.
The Lions intercepted Smackover near their own 10 early in the third quarter and soon broke an 85-yard quarterback touchdown run. A failed extra point kept the margin at eight, 20-12, with 7:38 remaining.
Parlor’s second rushing touchdown pulled Smackover within 20-18 at 5:20. The Buckaroos then used a double pass, with Braxton Bryant throwing the successful two-point conversion, to tie the game.
Bismarck regained a 27-20 lead with 6:53 left in the fourth quarter. Kieundre Billingly answered with a touchdown run, and Timmy Heaton’s extra point tied it at 27 with 4:40 remaining.
The Lions’ last-second fake field goal ended in an incomplete pass. An unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty against Smackover was carried into overtime, moving the Buckaroos’ starting spot from the 10 to the 25. Bismarck’s defense forced a scoreless possession, including a third-down sack, before the Lions ended the game with a 7-yard touchdown run on second down.
