Burnett’s four first-half touchdown passes lift Sylvan Hills over Maumelle

SHERWOOD — Caden Burnett threw four first-half touchdown passes and added a third-quarter rushing touchdown as Sylvan Hills defeated Maumelle 46-10 Friday at Bill Blackwood Field.

Kadon Williamson caught Burnett’s 40-yard touchdown pass with 10:08 remaining in the first quarter. Jesse Velazquez’s extra point made it 7-0 after an offside penalty on fourth down extended the opening possession.

Linebacker George Brown sacked Levi Warrior on third-and-six during Maumelle’s first possession. Burnett then found Jeremiah Carey for a fourth-down touchdown, and Williamson’s second touchdown reception increased the lead to 21-0 before the quarter ended.

Maurice Phillips caught Burnett’s fourth touchdown pass in the second quarter. Will Moore added a 30-yard touchdown run, finishing a possession that started at Sylvan Hills’ 13. The Bears led 33-0.

Maumelle capitalized on a Sylvan Hills punt miscue, setting up Dylan Moran’s field goal as the half ended.

Burnett completed 16 of 25 passes for 265 yards before halftime. Williamson had four catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns; Carey had four receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown.

The Hornets opened the second half with a 65-yard scoring drive. Winchell Wiggins caught a pass to the 5, then scored on a 4-yard toss sweep two plays later. Moran’s kick cut the margin to 33-10.

Burnett answered with a short touchdown keeper. The two-point pass fell incomplete, leaving the score 39-10.

The Hornets intercepted Burnett’s pass and returned the ball to Sylvan Hills’ 43. Ducy James made a fourth-down tackle to end Maumelle’s drive.

Carey scored on a 15-yard sweep in the fourth quarter, and Velazquez’s kick made it 46-10. The touchdown came one play after Maumelle recorded a sack that forced second-and-13.

Sylvan Hills stopped a fourth-down attempt before both teams exchanged possessions. Maumelle had the ball when time expired, and the Bears improved to 2-0.
