HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK 

No. 3 CARLISLE (1-1) at No. 12 Des Arc (0-2) This traditional rivalry has all the makings of an upset this week.  Carlisle is coming off a 42-22 win over Clarendon after dropping its opener to Lake Village. The Bison controlled much of the game with QB Baylor Hauk passing for 118 yards and a TD while rushing for 80 yards. Remington Gisclair rushed for 2 TDs.  “I know what this rivalry means to our players, school and community,” Carlisle Coach BJ Harrison says. “These are the games you get excited to be a part of. We’re looking forward to a great atmosphere. It should be a fun, physical matchup.” Des Arc is winless after losing its rivalry game to Hazen, 28-16. Hudson Goodman and CJ Willhite each scored TDs for the Eagles. Friday’s game will be the second one for Des Arc on the newly renovated Hinson-Rollins Stadium, which had an artificial playing surface installed this summer.  “We’re going to be excited to get that streak back on our side,” Des Arc Coach Nick Smith says. “They are a great program. I know Coach Harrison does a good job. Their fans and community do a good job supporting them. I know it’s going to be a great atmosphere. Both teams are going to be excited to play that. For us, we’re just looking to execute the game plan, be what we are. Defensively, line up correctly. Offensively, do what we do and execute. I think you will see a good ball game Friday.” The Eagles have lost the past 4 in this series, their last win 38-16 in 2021. If Des Arc can use its size up front, it has a chance to break that streak and get its first win. At the same time, Carlisle’s offense clicked well against Clarendon. Anything is possible in this contest.

NO 1 MOUNT IDA (2-0) at Class 3A Jessieville (0-2): Mount Ida routed Foreman 46-14 last week; QB Jackson White rushed for 159 yards and 2 TDs, and Eli McCullough had 4 TFLs and 4 QB sacks in the win. 

No. 11 MAGNET COVE (1-1) at No. 8 Poyen (2-0): Magnet Cove won a wild one, 43-42, over Jessieville. “Our offensive line improved tremendously from Week 0, especially at our TE spot. I’m proud of how our guys responded to tough situations throughout the game,” Magnet Cove Coach Dean Adams says. Hayden Jones rushed for 107 yards and 3 TDs; Nehemiah Norwood scored 2 TDs, and Parker Scott kicked the game-winning FG. Poyen lost Kaden Townley to a leg injury on the game’s first possession  against Spring Hill. QB Mason Camp passed for 281 yards and 4 TDs; Mason Shuff caught 8 passes for 132 yards and 3 TDs. 

 No. 17 Hackett (0-2) at Class 3A CEDARVILLE (2-0): Hackett Coach Mason Wann says injured player Remington Hodges is doing better after the Hornets’ Week 0 game was stopped in the third quarter because of the injury.  “He is still dealing with soreness,” Wann says. Tomas Ruiz rushed for 193 yards and 2 TDs and had 8 tackles in a loss to Lavaca. QB Hagen Moses passed for a TD and ran for another. 

No. 13 HECTOR (2-0) at Class 3A Paris (1-1): Hector RB Hudson McAlister rushed for 218 yards and 4 TDs in a win over Conway Christian. Cayden Manrique had 137 yards and 3 TDs. He had 246 all-purpose yards. He also blocked a PAT by Conway Christian. 

Class 3A Perryville (1-1) at No. 4 BIGELOW (1-1): Bigelow rushed for 320 yards in a 2-OT loss to Quitman. Wrangler Manes had 186 yards and 2 TDs, and Isaac Howell had 86 yards. Bradley Griffis led the defense with 7 tackles. “We’ve got some things to clean up defensively,” Bigelow Coach Luke Starks says.

MOUNTAINBURG at Class 3A Two Rivers (0-1): Mountainburg QB Easton Overbey passed for 201 yards and a TD and ran for another in the Dragons’ loss to Cedarville. His TD pass was caught by Adam Longley, who also had 11 tackles. 

SPRING HILL at Mountain Pine: Spring Hill had its best offensive game of the early season in a loss to Poyen. Levi Askew led the Bears in rushing with 113 yards on 21 carries as they finished with 269 yards on the ground. If the Bears do that again this week, they should pick up their first win. Mountain Pine lost to Baptist Prep 56-0 last week.

LR Episcopal (1-1) at No. 15 MARKED TREE (1-1): New Episcopal coach Tye Forte got his first career win as the Wildcats beat Piggott 41-8. QB Riley Fields passed for more than 100 yards and 2 TDs and ran for over 100 yards and 2 TDs. Jasir Lockridge scored 3 TDs — on a run, reception and punt return. Now, they face a traditional 2A power in Marked Tree, which beat Marshall 56-6. QB PJ Powell passed for 170 yards, Deangelo Risper rushed for 119 yards, and Damarion White caught 5 passes for 100 yards. 

No. 6 Earle (0-1) at Class 3A LAKE VILLAGE (2-0): Earle’s Jordyn Williams caught 6 passes for 108 yards in the Bulldogs’ loss to West Helena on Friday. 

Class 3A CUTTER-MORNING STAR (0-2) at East Poinsett County (1-1): New East Poinsett County coach Justin Lovell got his first win Friday night, beating Manila 44-0 behind a balanced offensive attack. Kavon James rushed for 112 yards and a TD. Ryder Gill scored a rushing TD and returned an INT for a TD. Ashton Reel had 10 tackles in the first half. 

Class 4A BALD KNOB at No. 18 McCrory (0-2): McCrory managed only a safety in a 26-2 loss to Lake Village. Briceton Cornelious led the Jaguars with 9 tackles. 

CLARENDON (1-1) at Class 3A Riverview (0-2): Clarendon played with Carlisle for 4 quarters before falling to the Bison by 20 points. QB Kyle James passed for 300 yards and 3 TDs.Brennen Hampton caught 10 passes for 161 yards and 2 TDs. 

Class 3A Piggott (0-2) at MARIANNA (0-2): Marianna QB Julian Wilson scored the Trojans’ only TD against England. Kobe Washington rushed for 90 yards on 5 carries.

3-2A 

Haynesville, La., at No. 2 JUNCTION CITY (1-1): Junction City looks to right the ship after a 56-12 loss to 3A Smackover. Nemo Caldwell and Zamundrae Gray each scored TDs for Junction City. “Complacency crept in with having the day off Friday, and we couldn’t handle business like men on and off the field,” Coach Devin Ball says. “We received the beatdown we needed.”

MINERAL SPRINGS (1-1) at England (1-0): Mineral Springs Coach Jarrod Jackson says his team came out flat in a 22-20 loss to Bearden. Braxton Keaster passed for 140 yards. Jamerian Staten scored 3 TDs. England opened its season with a 35-6 win over Marianna. Dallys Woods passed for 228 yards and 3 TDs, two of which went to Jarvis Drayer. Mason Guess had a rushing TD, 8 tackles and a blocked punt that was returned for a TD by Jack Hallum. England’s athleticism could be a difference in keeping the game close. 

No. 10 Gurdon (2-0) at Class 4A FOUNTAIN LAKE: Gurdon routed Hampton with another special teams TD. QB Jonah Jester passed for 135 yards and 2 TDs. “It’s a tough one this week,” Coach Kyle Jackson says. “It will be a tall task to slow them down.” 

No. 14 Murfreesboro (0-2) at Class 4A GENOA CENTRAL: Murfreesboro QB Kooper Caldwell passed for 197 yards and 3 TDs in a 35-34 loss to 3A Danville. He also rushed for 94 yards and a TD. 

Class 4A FOUKE at No. 16 Dierks (2-0): Dierks RB Drake Thatcher ran for 131 yards and 4 TDs on 10 carries in the Outlaws’ shutout of Horatio. QB Maclane Smith passed for 173 yards and a TD. 

Class 3A Horatio at FOREMAN: Foreman QB Briley Shoals threw for 165 yards in 2 TDs in a loss to Mount Ida last week. Vicktron Moore caught both TD passes. “We had much improved play from our offensive line,” Foreman coach Evan Spears says.

NO. 7 HAZEN (1-0) at Class 3A Marshall (Thursday): This game was originally scheduled for Aug. 28 but was delayed because of norovirus hitting the Searcy County area. The Hornets beat Des Arc 28-16 in Clay Totty’s first game in Hazen. Noah Adkins was big on both sides of the ball, rushing for 155 yards and 4 TDs while leading the defense with 17 tackles. 

Hampton (0-2) at CLASS 3A HARMONY GROVE OC (0-2): Hampton’s DJ Stephens scored the only Bulldogs TD in a 42-8 loss to Gurdon.
