HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 4 Glen Rose (3-2) at No. 6 ATKINS (4-1): The Red Devils have won 4 in a row since opening the season with a loss to Heber Springs. Bre’lan Criswell (6-144 rushing, 3 TDs) and Noah Metcalf (2 TDs) led the way in last week’s 63-20 win over Perryville. This week, Atkins aims to stop Glen Rose back Gage Hood, who rushed for 79 yards and a score in last week’s win over Cutter Morning Star. The Glen Rose defense intercepted Jacob Smith twice, with Peyton Swayze taking his pick all the way for a score. Leyton Baldwin had 102 yards and two scores against Perryville in Week 4. The Beavers have the weapons to win this game, but Atkins is at home and gets the edge. This game could turn out a lot like Bismarck and Smackover last week. The winner is the de facto conference champion.

WEEK 6 PREDICTIONS (favored teams in ALL CAPS and highlighted in orange)

1-3A

Paris (2-4) at No. 2 MANSFIELD (4-2): The Tigers are back to full strength now behind  Jeremiah Burton and Silas Burton. Their comeback win over Lavaca 2 weeks ago was big for their psyche and it showed in a 3-touchdown win over Cedarville last week. Paris had Charleston down in the fourth quarter last week and could not hang on for the upset. The Eagles (averaging 14.7 points per game) continue to struggle with consistency on offense and special teams, and their schedule only gets tougher. Mansfield is rolling and tough to beat at home.

CEDARVILLE (4-2) at No. 15 Charleston (2-3): These teams have played Paris over the past 2 weeks. Cedarville won 35-21 behind Daniel Ramirez and Eli Daniel. Charleston fought back to win 27-19 last week against the Eagles. Charleston has a shot if it can get healthy and return to full strength. This game will determine playoff seeding, and the loser will have work to do over the next 4 weeks.

No. 16 LAVACA (4-2) at No. 18 Greenland (4-1): Lavaca’s losses this season are by a combined 12 points, and they continue to play well on both sides of the ball. The offense averages 42 points per game, and the defense allows 19 per game. They will have to slow down Greenland’s Braxton Story, who had 309 yards rushing against West Fork 2 weeks ago in a 57-14 win. Lavaca is a little deeper, and the defense has played better, so they get the edge on the road. Don’t be surprised if Greenland tries to play keep-away with its rushing attack.

OPEN West Fork

2-3A

Marshall (0-5) at SALEM (1-4): Salem was picked to win the conference by the coaches, but the Greyhounds have scored a touchdown or less in their 4 losses. Their defense shut down Melbourne’s passing attack last week, which was a positive. Peyton Chambers and Connor Muir need to put the team on their backs and win big this week to build confidence down the stretch, or they could miss the playoffs.

No. 14 MELBOURNE (3-2) at Mountain View (2-3): The Bearkatz used their defense last week to win 14-8 over Salem. Expect QB Abe Copper and wideouts Mason Wren and Benaiah Spray to get back on track this week against Mountain View. The Yellow Jackets shut out Marshall last week. Noak Davis and Eli Davis are offensive catalysts, and both need big-time performances to pull off the upset. Melbourne has shown it can win a shootout and a slugfest, so it has the edge on the road.

No. 12 NEWPORT (3-2) at Riverview (1-4): Newport quarterback Luke Sampson (283 yards of total offense) accounted for 5 touchdowns in a 46-9 win over Quitman last week. Tavarius Hardaway caught 5 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Riverview almost made it 2 wins in a row with a 22-20 loss to Yellville-Summit last week. The Greyhounds take care of business in this one.

Yellville-Summit (2-3) at No. 19 QUITMAN (3-2): Quarterbacks take center stage in this one. Westin Swearingen has been the catalyst for Yellville-Summit this season, accounting for most of the team’s offensive production. Quitman has lost its past 2 games after starting 3-0. Jack Sexton passed for 197 yards in the loss to Newport last week. Quitman can avoid a third loss in a row if the offense does its thing.

3-3A

Harrisburg (3-2) at No. 7 RIVERCREST (4-1): Rivercrest, which rolled over Piggott last week, now gets into the tougher part of its conference schedule. QB Jayden Ralph has 12 touchdown passes; Lexx Latham paces the rushing attack with 109 yards per game and 6 touchdowns. Harrisburg got a big game from Bryar Jones (95 yards rushing, 2 TDs) in last week’s 28-13 win over Hoxie. Tiya Ansley had a pick-six in the win. Rivercrest has too many weapons and too much offense to lose this one at home.

Piggott (0-5) at No. 8 WALNUT RIDGE (4-1): The Bobcats made a statement in their 42-point win over Palestine-Wheatley last week. Jace Blake (852 rushing yards, 10 TDs) and junior Jasper Callahan (468 rushing, 10 TDs) lead the offense. Piggott’s Braxton Chase scored on a 13-yard run against Rivercrest last week. Walnut Ridge rolls with an eye on a matchup with Rivercrest in 2 weeks.

No. 13 OSCEOLA (3-2) at Palestine-Wheatley (0-5): Palestine-Wheatley has its back against the wall. The Patriots reported the use of an ineligible player to the AAA last week, resulting in forfeiture of their first 4 games, including the conference opener to Hoxie. The Osceola defense has posted 3 shutouts. The Seminoles’ 2 losses have come to Gosnell and Mills, so when the Seminoles punch in their weight class, they land knockout blows. Key for Osceola is to get to Week 9 healthy. If it does, Osceola has a shot to help its playoff seeding with games against Walnut Ridge and Rivercrest to end the season.

HOXIE (2-3) at Manila (0-5): Hoxie’s Mustangs, who have scored 13 or fewer points in 4 of 5 games, need to find some offense down the stretch to make the playoffs. Colby Bullard and Layton Brinsfield could be the answer to more points against a reeling Manila team. Sophomore Gabe Gonzales triggers the Manila offense and has thrown for more than 500 yards this season. Junior Brady Cohn leads Manila in rushing. Hoxie has the edge talent-wise, but this could be a defensive battle where anything could happen.

4-3A

No. 4 Glen Rose (3-2) at No. 6 Atkins (4-1): Hootens.com Game of the Week

CUTTER MORNING STAR (0-5) at Perryville (1-4): It is not a stretch that Cutter Morning Star thinks it can win out and end the season 5-5. The Eagles have played the top 2 teams in the league — Atkins and Glen Rose — and their next 2 games will determine if they get a playoff spot. Jacob Smith and Jackson McGlone had good games in the loss to Glen Rose. Braxton Collins led the way for Perryville last week with 56 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Tanner Frith was injured in that game, so CMS gets the nod on the road.

No. 20 Danville (4-1) at JESSIEVILLE (2-3): This is an intriguing matchup. Jessieville is averaging 40 points per game and is led by QB Jacob Graves (1,499 yards of total offense and 17 touchdowns). Danville must slow down Graves to win this week. The Little Johns counter with senior running back Christian Alcocer (36-356 rushing, 6 TDs). Either team could win if it turns into a shootout, but Jessieville has played better lately and could pull off an upset at home behind Graves’ arm and legs.

CONWAY CHRISTIAN (0-5) at Two Rivers (0-5): The winner avoids the cellar for now. Conway Christian will rely on Creed Hildebrand (2 rushing scores last week) to get the offense going this week. Hildebrand also had 2 rushing scores in week 2 against Quitman. Two Rivers showed some offensive life against Jessieville with a season-high 26 points. The problem is the defense has allowed 34 or more points in all 5 games this season. Conway Christian gets the edge.

7-3A

Cossatot River (0-5) at No. 3 BISMARCK (4-1): Bismarck gets a bit of a break against winless Cossatot River after a tough win over Smackover last week. Things work out like that at times when you are one of the top teams in the state. Bismarck, which led for most of the game against Smackover, showed resiliency when forced into overtime. The Lions are led by Cayden Burch (1,000 yards of total offense) and junior Parker Hughes, the team’s leading tackler.

No. 11 PRESCOTT (4-1) at Harmony Grove (O.C.) (2-3): Prescott has won its first 2 conference games by a combined score of 124-0, and now has 3 shutouts on the year. They could have had 4, but Ashdown scored a late touchdown. Sophomore Desmond Prater has been solid at quarterback, and junior Tiden McKillion leads the rushing attack. Senior Brian Woodley leads the team in solo tackles and sacks. HGOC can still make the playoffs, but has back-to-back games against Prescott and Bismarck.

No. 5 SMACKOVER (4-1) at Centerpoint (4-1): The Buckaroos, with one of the best rushing attacks in 3A, will have to bounce back from their overtime loss to Bismarck. Centerpoint’s Anthony Valdez threw 3 touchdown passes in a 40-14 win over Parkers Chapel last week, with 2 to Ely Welch. Jayden Tyrell runs hard and could trouble Smackover.

PARKERS CHAPEL (1-4) at Horatio (0-5): Parkers Chapel, with 14 returning starters, was supposed to contend for a playoff spot this season, but things have gone wrong since opening the season with a win over Hampton.  Parker Chapel has lost the past 4 contests by an average of 34.5 points, but it can beat Horatio, which has scored 26 points this season and has been shut out 3 times. Horatio last scored a touchdown in a 58-14 loss at Foreman. Parkers Chapel gets a much-needed win.

8-3A

No. 1 FORDYCE (3-1) at No. 10 Helena (2-2): Fordyce Coach Tim Rodgers says he knows his defense can play better than it did in last week’s 62-50 win over Drew Central. Rodgers has acknowledged that his Redbugs still play with a 2A-level roster at times and have guys going both ways. The guys they do have are some of the best in the state, however. Micah Gamble is averaging over 14 yards per carry this season, and he has 3 interceptions. Jamartez Stroud has 4 interceptions and averages 46.3 yards per return. Helena had a week to heal after its loss to Rison. Keveahn Brown has 5 rushing touchdowns and averages 8.6 yards per carry. Helena’s Tevin Calhoun (16 QB hurries) has 3 of the team’s 7 sacks. This could turn into a shootout with Fordyce getting the edge.

No. 9 RISON (5-0) at McGehee (2-3): Chris Vereen’s Wildcats are averaging 49.2 points per game, but the defense must tighten up down the stretch as tougher opponents approach. Rison has allowed 34.2 points per game in its past 3 wins — over Junction City, Helena and Dumas. Aidan Bitely and Kyson Walker to lead the rushing attack. McGehee, averaging 17.0 points in conference, was thumped by Lake Village last week and needs the offense to get on track. The Owls’ defense has their toughest test of the season this week.

No. 17 LAKE VILLAGE (4-1) at Drew Central (0-5): Drew Central may be the best winless team in the state no matter the classification. It took Fordyce to the wire last week, putting up 50 points against a defense that had been giving up 13.3 points per game. Lake Village is a playoff contender with the dynamic rushing duo of Arlando Wilson Jr. (809 yards, 13 touchdowns) and Chad Dixon Jr. (508 yards, 5 touchdowns), who are averaging more than 8.0 yards per rush. A 46-14 win over McGehee was a statement for Lake Village.

General Trass (La.) (1-4) at DUMAS (1-4): The Bobcats have scored at least 40 points in their last 4 games and lost 3. A 62-52 loss to Lake Village 2 weeks ago was followed by a 65-40 loss to Rison last week. Head coach Rod Smith kept it simple after the loss to Rison:  “We gotta be better,” he said. Kemarion Jackson averages more than 100 receiving yards per game, while Torian Dunlap and Kentz Brown lead the rushing attack. Dumas should get the win over General Trass based on its offense alone.
