HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 7 Rivercrest (6-1, 4-0) at No. 6 WALNUT RIDGE (6-1, 4-0): There has been a 3-way tie for first place in the 3-3A conference for the past 4 weeks. That ends after Friday night. For Walnut Ridge, Jace Blake and Jasper Callahan lead a rushing attack that averages 320.9 yards per game. For Rivercrest, senior quarterback Jayden Ralph and junior running back Lexx Latham lead a more balanced Colts offense. Walnut Ridge has been more dominant this season, and it will be motivated against a Rivercrest team that has to prepare for an unorthodox offense that scores like a high-powered machine.
WEEK 8 PREDICTIONS (favored teams in ALL CAPS and highlighted in orange)
1-3A
Greenland (4-3, 1-2) at No. 1 MANSFIELD (6-2, 4-0): Braxton Story’s 309 rushing yards in Week 4 is a distant memory, as the Pirates have scored 20 points total in their past 2 games. Mansfield has scored 68 points in each of its past 2 games, with Silas Burton and Jeremiah Burton leading the way on offense. Both runners will get over 1,000 yards this season, and Mansfield should roll in this one.
No. 20 LAVACA (5-3, 2-2) at Paris (2-5, 0-3): Paris was off last week, and maybe that gives it a chance to get healthy for the stretch run. Lavaca’s high-powered offense managed only 6 points last week against Cedarville. It was the first time this season the Golden Arrows scored fewer than 34 points in a game. They should get back on track with the No. 4 seed firmly within their reach to end the season.
West Fork (2-5, 0-3) at No. 15 CHARLESTON (4-3, 3-0): Lukas Burleson had a big week for Charleston in last week’s win over Greenland, and Ricky May’s squad has stabilized over the past few weeks. West Fork is yielding 49.7 points per game this season, 60.0 points per game in conference play. Charleston rolls in this one as Mansfield looms for the 1-3A title.
OPEN No. 18 Cedarville
2-3A
Marshall (0-7, 0-4) at No. 11 NEWPORT (5-2, 4-0): The Greyhounds have won by shutout in 3 of their past 4 games, with Quitman’s 9-point total in Week 5 the only points allowed by Newport. Luke Sampson is averaging 4 touchdowns per week; Jataelyn Crite has scored on offense and defense this season; ZayShawn Greer is a load at running back. A fourth shutout win in 5 games is not out of the question in this mismatch.
Riverview (1-6, 1-3) at No. 16 QUITMAN (5-2, 2-2): Quitman, the most talented and consistent among the 2-2 teams in 2-3A, controls its playoff seeding. Trenton Corley’s team has responded well after consecutive losses and averages 37.9 points on offense.
SALEM (2-5, 2-2) at Mountain View (3-4, 2-2): The winner of this game is most likely in the playoffs; the loser has work to do. Salem couldn’t do much against Newport last week, and Peyton Chambers will have to lead the way for Salem on the road. Alaska McDaniel and George Rector lead the Mountain View offense. This could be a defensive struggle with Salem getting the slight edge. Mountain View has won twice by shutout and lost twice by shutout in conference play.
Yellville-Summit (2-5, 1-3) at No. 14 MELBOURNE (5-2, 4-0): Melbourne has allowed 8 points total over the past 3 weeks, including back-to-back shutouts. Ty Gillihan is averaging 6.0 yards per carry this season for the Bearkatz. Yellville-Summit QB Westin Swearingen passed for 2 scores, 1 to Rusty Goodall, in the loss to Quitman in Week 6.
3-3A
No. 7 Rivercrest (6-1, 4-0) at No. 6 WALNUT RIDGE (6-1, 4-0): Hootens.com Game of the Week, above, averaging 32.6 points per game. Kylan Bragg rushed for 131 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Deion Spears passed for 240 yards and 2 scores in last week’s win over Harrisburg. Harper Fears and Colby Bullard lead a Hoxie team that has put itself in good position to make the playoffs.
Manila (0-7, 0-4) at HARRISBURG (3-4, 1-3): Bryar Jones tossed two touchdown passes to Tiya Ashley in last week’s loss to Osceola. They should be able to double that against Manila this week. The Lions have given up 41.3 points per game this season and scored only 6.1 points per game. The Hornets keep their playoff hopes alive with a win.
PALESTINE-WHEATLEY (0-7, 0-4) at Piggott (0-7, 0-4): The Patriots have struggled since conference play started, and they announced the use of an ineligible player, forfeiting 4 games they had won on the field. Palestine-Wheatley gets back on track with a trip to Piggott. Palestine-Wheatley led Rivercrest 15-12 early in the fourth quarter last week before the Colts closed with 21 points. Adron Cooper rushed for 2 touchdowns for Palestine-Wheatley.
4-3A
Conway Christian (1-6, 1-3) at CUTTER MORNING STAR (1-6, 1-3): Cutter Morning Star broke out last week against Jessieville for homecoming. Coach Josh Brown says his team played with aggression and the defense caused chaos all night. Brown says QB Jacob Smith had his best game of the season. Conway Christian picked up its first win in Week 7, followed by a 42-point loss to Atkins. Cutter has the momentum and talent edge to get a second consecutive win.
Danville (4-3, 2-2) at No. 9 GLEN ROSE (4-3, 3-1): The Little Johns have dropped back-to-back games after starting conference play 2-0. Christian Alcocer leads Danville in rushing. Glen Rose is still in position to grab a No. 2 seed for the playoffs. Gage Hood had 3 touchdowns against Atkins in Week 6. Glen Rose wins this one easily.
Jessieville (3-4, 3-1) at No. 4 ATKINS (6-1, 4-0): Atkins has won 6 in a row, including 3 games when it put up 63 points. Jessieville was ambushed at Cutter Morning Star last week and enters the tougher part of its schedule. Atkins is playing as well as anyone in 3A right now and moves to 7-1.
Two Rivers (0-7, 0-4) at PERRYVILLE (3-4, 2-2): Perryville used a stingy defense and the arm and legs of Tanner Frith to win its past 2 games by 10 points. They should have an easier time at home this week against winless Two Rivers.
7-3A
Harmony Grove (O.C.) (2-5, 1-3) at CENTERPOINT (5-2, 3-1): A win guarantees Centerpoint a playoff berth. QB Anthony Valdez has a 4:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio this season; Ely Welch paces the rushing attack. Harmony Grove averages 11.1 points per game and is coming off its fourth game without scoring. Centerpoint punches its ticket to the playoffs.
Cossatot River (0-7, 0-4) at HORATIO (0-7, 0-4): The battle for seventh place in the 3A-7 conference is not a trophy game or a rivalry game but it describes this game perfectly. Both teams are allowing more than 50 points per game; Horatio holds the offensive edge with a 10.3 scoring average compared to Cossatot River’s 3.4 points per game.
No. 10 Prescott (6-1, 4-0) at No. 2 BISMARCK (6-1, 4-0): Bismarck has already cleared the Smackover hurdle with a 1-score win in Week 5 and now faces Prescott with the conference championship on the line. Cayden Burch has 19 total touchdowns, and Clayton Martinez has 10 rushing touchdowns for Bismarck. Tiden McKillion leads the Curly Wolves in rushing. Prescott is allowing 8.6 points per game, has 4 shutouts this season and has yielded 6 points in 4 conference games.
No. 3 SMACKOVER (6-1, 3-1) at Parkers Chapel (2-5, 1-3): The Buckaroos average 293.9 yards rushing per game, led by Kiundre Billingly and Madison McElroy. Trason Parlor has passed for 15 touchdowns this season. This game is a warm-up for Smackover’s showdown with Prescott next week.
8-3A
No. 5 FORDYCE (4-2, 2-1) at Dumas (1-5, 0-3): The Redbugs made a statement last week, beating Lake Village 60-6. Micah Gamble (1,028 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns this season) leads the offense. Jamartez Stroud leads the state with 7 interceptions and shuts down his side of the field every week. Dumas has done well on offense, but its defense has let it down. Kentz Brown is a star in the making with the ball in his hands, and sophomore Toriando Dunlap is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the sophomore class.
No. 8 HELENA (4-2, 2-1) at No. 17 McGehee (3-3, 2-1): Keveahn Brown leads Helena, which is coming off a 50-24 win over Dumas after upsetting Fordyce. Helena needs a little help to win the conference title, but it is playing like a contender right now. The Owls were off last week, and their season highlight is a win over Rison. This game will be won in the trenches, and Helena has the edge.
No. 12 RISON (6-1, 3-1) at No. 19 Lake Village (5-2, 3-1): Lake Village was held to 6 points in its loss to Fordyce last week. Chris Vereen’s Rison team is effective on offense, especially in the run game, and that should be enough to win on the road and keep its conference title hopes alive.
