HOOTENS.COM CLASS 6A GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 6 Van Buren (5-2, 4-0) at No. 1 GREENWOOD (7-0, 4-0)
Greenwood has won 7 in a row against Van Buren, with a 63-14 decision a year ago.
Van Buren improved to 4-0 in 6A West play for the first time since 1996 with last week’s 17-10 home victory over Fort Smith Southside. The Pointers led 7-3 after a quarter, 10-3 at halftime, but the game was tied at 10-10 after 3 quarters. Van Buren junior QB Hayden Williford completed 11 of 18 passes for 63 yards, while Austin Riggs completed a 33-yard pass. The Pointers rushed for 202 yards, led by Hayden Christenberry’s 139 rushing yards, while Tristan Ray scored a short rushing TD. Antwon Cooper and Darren Mays were the top tacklers with 12 apiece; Mays, Ray, and Talen Jones intercepted passes. Mays returned his interception 50 yards for a TD.
Greenwood led Lake Hamilton 21-3 after a quarter, 35-3 at halftime, and 42-10 after 3 quarters in last week’s 42-10 victory in Pearcy. Greenwood senior QB Kane Archer (27-36 passing, 345 yards, 5 TDs; 4-31 rushing) led the offense. Eight Bulldogs caught passes at Lake Hamilton, led by Cooper Bland (6-109 receiving, 3 TDs) and Champ Davis (9-129, TD) and Brayden Brewer (2-17, TD). Five Greenwood rushers finished with 13 yards or more, led by Drake Little’s 5 carries for 33 yards, and 4 carries for 20 yards and a TD from Wesley Raggio.
The winner of this game sits in sole possession of first place in the 6A West. Greenwood is just too much at home, where the Bulldogs have won 73 consecutive games, and 33 in a row consecutively.

THIS WEEK’S GAMES (Favored team in all CAPs and highlighted)
6A EAST
No. 10 Marion (4-3, 2-2) at SHERIDAN (3-4, 2-2): Marion is 5-0 all time against Sheridan, including 42-21 last year. The past 2 meetings have been in Marion due to a scheduling quirk. The winner earns a valuable head-to-head tiebreaker in what is shaping up to be a tight 6A East race. Marion and Jonesboro were tied 0-0 at the half, but the Hurricane scored 21 unanswered second-half points in a 21-6 victory. The Patriots got a TD pass from Zayden Walker to Jeremiah Dent, but were held to 244 total yards with 72 rushing yards. Marion owns the tiebreaker over Sylvan Hills and West Memphis right now, and the Patriots host Little Rock Catholic, and play at Benton Week 10 after traveling to Sheridan this Friday. Sheridan scored 30 points in the first half last week en route to a 51-36 victory at Little Rock Catholic. The Yellowjackets scored on their first 4 possessions at LR Catholic, including 2 TD runs from tailback Zay Stephens, and TD passes from Easton Barksdale to Dylan Smith and Walker Shields. Sheridan has wins over West Memphis and LR Catholic so far in league play, and the Yellowjackets finish at Sylvan Hills and home for El Dorado down the stretch. This could be the week’s closest game between playoff hopefuls, but Sheridan’s explosive offense and emerging defense gives it an edge in this one.
LR Catholic (2-5, 1-3) at No. 5 BENTON (5-2, 3-1): Benton has won 2 of the past 3 games with Little Rock Catholic, including 42-0 in 2024. Little Rock Catholic trailed Sheridan 30-13 last week at halftime before falling 51-36. The Rockets got 112 rushing yards and 2 TDs from QB Philips Blair against Sheridan but surrendered a season-high of 51 points. LR Catholic travels to Marion next week, followed by a home date with Sylvan Hills Week 10 after this week’s matchup at Benton. The Rockets own the head-to-head tiebreaker against winless West Memphis thus far. Benton led El Dorado 12-7 after a quarter, 29-21 at halftime, and 50-36 after 3 quarters in last week’s 60-36 road victory. The Panthers scored the game’s first 12 points and racked up 534 total yards. Benton senior QB Drew Davis completed 19 of 26 passes for 284 yards and 3 TDs, and Davis added 78 rushing yards and 2 scores. Will Carter (10-165 receiving, 2 TDs) and Karson Collatt (5-70 receiving) were the top pass-catchers.
No. 7 EL DORADO (4-3, 2-2) at W. Memphis (0-7, 0-4): El Dorado has won 3 of the past 5 meetings with West Memphis, including 63-28 last year. Senior tailback Carlos Williams (123 rushing, 2 TDs) led the Blue Devils at Sylvan Hills, but the Bears pulled away for a 55-12 victory. The Blue Devils likely need to win their final 3 games to make the playoffs an unlikely scenario with games remaining against No. 5 Benton and at No. 8 Jonesboro along with El Dorado. The Wildcats’ 60-36 loss to Benton was their second home loss in a row. The Wildcats trailed 12-7 when they recovered a fumble late in the first period. El Dorado QB Cannon Jacobs completed 16 of 30 passes against Benton for 277 yards and he rushed for 122 yards and 3 TDs; Justin Hammett caught 4 passes for 115 yards. We expect a desperate West Memphis team playing at home this week, but El Dorado has designs on hosting a playoff game in November, and the Wildcats must take care of business here for that to happen.
No. 4 SYLVAN HILLS (6-1, 3-1) at No. 8 Jonesboro (4-3, 3-1): Jonesboro has beaten Sylvan Hills in 4 of the past 5 meetings, including 57-26 last season. These teams boast identical 3-1 conference records, and the winner of this game takes a massive step forward in pursuit of a share of the league title and a first-round playoff bye. Jonesboro scored the first 21 points last week in a 21-6 victory at Marion. The Hurricane scored first on a 15-yard TD toss from QB Asa Myers to Kamari Fisher, a 61-yard TD run from K’Den Hawkins, and an 8-yard TD run from tailback T.J. Brown. Jonesboro defensive back Randy Eusebio intercepted a Marion pass deep in Hurricane territory to end the Patriots’ final drive and clinch victory. Jonesboro’s final 2 games are at El Dorado next week and home for West Memphis Week 10. Sylvan Hills remained very much alive for the 6A East crown last week, when it never trailed West Memphis in a 55-12 win. The Bears rolled up 608 yards (352 passing and 256 rushing) and 29 first downs. Sylvan Hills QB Tyler Hampton completed 16 of 27 passes against West Memphis for 315 yards, while tailback Isaiah Howell ran 10 times for 91 yards and 2 TDs, and he caught 2 passes for 13 yards and another score. Tyler Blakely snagged 2 passes for 127 yards, including a 99-yard TD pass. Ten Bears caught passes, while 7 earned carries. Sylvan Hills continues to dazzle after snapping a 20-game losing streak to start the year. The Bears produce enough big plays on offense to stay perfect on the road, a victory that would put them in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the conference.
6A WEST
No. 6 Van Buren (5-2, 4-0) at No. 1 GREENWOOD (7-0, 4-0): See Hootens.com Class 6A Game of the Week, above.
Siloam Springs (2-5, 0-4) at No. 2 SHILOH CHRISTIAN (5-2, 3-1): Shiloh Christian slammed Siloam Springs 45-6 last season, in what is believed to be the first meeting of the schools. Siloam Springs trailed Mountain Home 19-0 last week at halftime before falling 33-0, but the Panthers had the ball in Bombers territory a few times, once after an interception, with another drive ending after failing on a fourth-and-1. Siloam Springs has plenty of optimism down the stretch this season, with its leading passer (freshman Titus Benson), and playmakers Ryan Estacio, Boaz Benson, Stewart Schwaniger, and Hudson Loughridge all expected to return in 2026. Shiloh Christian won at Russellville 55-18 a week ago, leading 36-8 after 1 quarter, 49-11 at halftime and 55-11 after 3 quarters. Shiloh Christian QB Cole Creighton (10-15 passing, 214 yards, 6 TDs) led the air attack, with Jake Bodenstein completing 2 of 3 tosses for 9 yards. Will Fryer (10-87 rushing) and Griffin Mason (5-58 rushing) led the ground attack. Cohen Beach (3-52 receiving, TD), Zane Sluyter (2-49 receiving, 2 TDs) and Chandler Kemp (2 TD receptions) led the receivers. Shiloh outgained Russellville 417-146. Shiloh Christian has the inside track to claim the No. 2 playoff seed, and the Saints take care of business on Friday.
Lake Hamilton (2-5, 1-3) at No. 3 MOUNTAIN HOME (6-1, 3-1): Lake Hamilton is 4-1 all time against Mountain Home, but the Bombers’ first win in the series came in last year’s 36-0 win. Lake Hamilton likely needs a second conference win to clinch a playoff spot after last week’s 42-10 loss to Greenwood. The Wolves totaled 269 yards (158 rushing, 111 passing) against the Bulldogs, and Lake Hamilton got 84 yards rushing from Jace Bohannan, who also completed 10 of 19 passes for 111 yards. Coy Autrey rushed for 74 yards and a TD. Marvin Garcia booted a 34-yard field goal. Blaine Sears (16 tackles against Greenwood) and Jorden Amos (14 stops) led the Lake Hamilton defense. Mountain Home stayed alive for the 6A West title and a first-round playoff bye with last week’s 33-0 win at Siloam Springs. Bombers senior 2-way standout Barrett Miller (34-199 rushing, 5 TDs, including 3 in the first half). The Bombers recorded their second consecutive shutout at Siloam Springs after a 43-0 win over Russellville 2 weeks ago. Lake Hamilton continues to compete hard down the stretch, but look for the Bomber defense to continue playing well this week.
Russellville (0-7, 0-4) at No. 9 FS SOUTHSIDE (4-3, 1-3): Fort Smith Southside has beaten Russellville 5 of the past 9 meetings, but Russellville won 45-38 a season ago. The loser of this game likely misses the playoffs. Russellville scored in 3 of 4 quarters in last week’s 55-18 home loss to Shiloh Christian. The Cyclones rushed for 140 yards, but lost the turnover battle 4-0. Ladarreus Prince (9-49 rushing; Jayden Foster (9-41 rushing, TD). Russellville converted on both of its red-zone opportunities. The Cyclones expect to return their leading passer (junior Marcellus Olson), second-leading rusher (junior Sam Callahan), and 3 offensive linemen in 2026.Fort Smith Southside lost 17-10 last week at Van Buren. The Mavericks got a 56-yard TD toss from QB Blake Forsgren to Peyton Zimmerman and a 35-yard field goal from Rodrigo Hernandez to account for the scoring. Malachi Warren, Ethan Dunn, and Daniel Morales all registered sacks for FS Southside. It’s not an elimination game, but it’s close. Look for Fort Smith Southside to put together longer drives and grind out enough points to win..
