HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 1 BRYANT (9-0, 6-0) at No. 4 Conway (8-1, 6-0)

The winner is the outright 7A Central Champ. The loser won’t sob for too long, as it will still earn a first-round bye in the 7A playoffs. Conway’s Amari Davis and Trey Harris bullied their way to 364 combined yards and 5 TDs a week ago against LR Christian. Conway’s RBs Harris (184 yards, 3 TD) and Davis (180 yards, 2 TDs) look to continue their ground success against one of the nation’s top rushing defenses.

This one means a lot for both communities, both schools, and both head coaches. Quad Sanders spent time with Buck James at Bryant, coordinating their defense during the 5-state title-in-a-row run. Bryant has not lost to Conway in recent years. In 2021, the Hornets escaped with a 32-29 win, but all games since have been by 19+ points for Bryant. Conway’s last win over Bryant? A 24-10 win on November 7, 2014.

Conway’s offensive line has paved the way for RBs Davis and Harris to run wild. Bryant gives up 9 points per game. This one will be won in the trenches, with a turnover or an explosive play. Bryant’s tough defense leads it to victory and the conference title.

WEEK 10 PREDICTIONS  (favored team in ALL CAPS and highlighted)

7A CENTRAL

No. 10 North Little Rock (3-6, 2-4) at No. 8 CABOT (3-6, 3-3): Plenty of scenarios to unpack here. Both teams are locked into the playoffs, so they are battling for seeding. Scott Reed’s team has a clear path to hosting a first-round playoff game against the No. 5 seed from the 7A West with a win and a Pulaski Academy loss to LR Christian, most likely Springdale or Springdale Har-Ber. Wins by Cabot and PA would result in a 3-way tie with LR Christian. Playoff points would come into play to determine seeds 3, 4, and 5. A North Little Rock win and a PA loss would also force a 3-way tie for seeds 4,5, and 6. Playoff points would again come into play. If the Charging Wildcats and Bruins both win, then Cabot falls to the 6 seed and North Little Rock is a lock at 5. The most likely scenario sends NLR to the playoffs as the 6 seed.

No. 9 Pulaski Academy (3-6, 3-3) at No. 7 LITTLE ROCK CHRISTIAN (6-3, 4-2): Pulaski Academy’s Javion Walker (233 yards of total offense) caught 2 TD passes in PA’s win over LR Southwest. A PA loss and a Cabot win would have the Bruins traveling to either Fayetteville or Har-Ber for a first-round game. A PA win and a Cabot win would result in a 3-way tie for third with Christian. Playoff points would come into play here to iron out seeds 3, 4, and 5. Christian controls its path to the 3 seed with a win, but dating PA has won 7 of the last 9 in the series. LR Christian has the homefield advantage here, and that provides enough to win a close one over the Bruins.

LR Southwest (0-9, 0-6) at LR CENTRAL (2-7, 0-6): These teams have been eliminated from playoff consideration.  Central looks for revenge after Southwest won last year, 38-21. A Central win improves its win total from last fall and gives the Tigers some momentum to build on in the offseason. A Gryphons win would be their first since beating Central a year ago.

7A WEST

No. 6 FAYETTEVILLE (5-4, 3-3) at Springdale Har-Ber (3-6, 2-4): Big plays highlighted Fayetteville’s 51-7 win over Heritage. CJ Bailey returned a KO 70 yards for a TD and Hank Hendrix finished 13-16 passing, 245 yards and 3 TDs. Fayetteville is the 4 seed with a win. If Har-Ber wins by 13 or more, it will be the 4 seed. If it wins by 12 or less, it awaits results from rival Springdale to see where it lands.

Rogers Heritage (1-8, 1-5) at No. 3 ROGERS (8-1, 5-1): Rogers earns the No. 2 seed from the West with a win as long as Bentonville West loses to Bentonville. The Mounties could fall to the 3 seed if West beats Bentonville to create a 3-way tie atop the standings at 6-1.

No. 2 BENTONVILLE (9-0, 6-0) at No. 5 Bentonville West (7-2, 5-1): Bentonville earns the No. 1 seed with a win, but Bentonville West turns it into the 7A Wild West, with a possible 3-way tie atop the division if Rogers beats Heritage. Each would have a head-to-head win so that you would move to playoff points. West would be the No. 1 seed, according to playoff points, and Bentonville the No. 2 seed, since it owns the head-to-head win over the Mounties. A Tigers victory makes them the outright, undefeated 7A West champs; West would likely fall to the 3 seed after losing to Rogers. West is playing for a first-round bye; Bentonville will have a first-round bye win or lose. Both starting QBs had relatively light nights a week ago. West cruised over Northside; QB Tre Thompson threw for 135 yards in limited action. Bentonville won 63-7 over Springdale behind 162 yards and 3 TDs from QB Cole Slepecki. This game can be expected to go down to the wire. Bentonville’s Blair Irvin III, who recently re-opened his recruiting process after being orally committed to the Hogs, and the Tigers’ offense makes plays late and captures the conference crown on the road.

Fort Smith Northside (0-9, 0-6) at SPRINGDALE (3-6, 2-4): A 4-point Oct. 10 win over rival Springdale Har-Ber has Springdale in position to climb the playoff seeding ladder with a win. A win for both Springdale and Har-Ber creates chaos and an opportunity for Springdale to surpass Fayetteville in seeding. Two weeks ago, Fayetteville beat Springdale by 24, so Springdale needs to win here by at least 25 points if there is a 3-way tie.
