HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
Class 5A LR Parkview (1-0) at No. 1 BRYANT (2-0)
Two teams always in the mix for the state title in their respective classifications collide. Bryant comes off a 31–14 win over Newton (Ga.), where its defense held Alabama-offered sophomore RB Kevin Hartsfield to 20 yards. The Hornets’ front 7 has depth and physicality, while RBs Kollin Robinson and T.J. Hodges power a run game that consistently wears teams down.
Parkview, last year’s 5A champion, is loaded with speed and Division I talent. The Patriots can strike quickly with QB Landon Garner, WR Trey Alexander, and RB Travis Gray, and their defensive line has the speed to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. Parkview has the playmakers to challenge Bryant.
Bryant’s physicality, depth, and ability to rotate fresh defenders give the Hornets the edge. Expect Parkview to land a few big plays, but Bryant has too much balance and strength.
WEEK 2 PREDICTIONS (favored team highlighted and ALL CAPS)
Class 6A FS SOUTHSIDE (1-0) at No. 10 LR Central (1-0): Central beat Springdale 26-7 in Week 0. Now, the Tigers try to avenge last year’s loss to Southside with their WR speed and athletic secondary. Southside travels to Quigley Stadium after a rivalry win over Northside and a bye week.
No. 8 PULASKI ACADEMY (0-1) at West Monroe (La.) (1-1): Pulaski Academy sat idle last week after a shocking 53-14 loss to Class 5A Joe T. Robinson in Week 0. QB William Svoboda directs PA’s up-tempo style, which strives to create mismatches. The Bruins thrive on chaos. West Monroe is physical but has historically struggled against high-octane Arkansas offenses. Traveling to Louisiana is never easy, but PA’s ability to score quickly gives it an edge.
North Little Rock (0-1) at Class 6A BENTON (0-1): NLR lost by 38 in the opener to Rogers, struggling to move the ball and protect its QB. Benton, meanwhile, has the depth and line play to dictate tempo. The Panthers excel at grinding down opponents with their run game. The Charging Wildcats need a flawless game to pull the upset, but Benton’s efficiency is too much. Benton controls possessions, forces NLR to play from behind, and capitalizes on mistakes.
LR Southwest (0-1) at LUFKIN (Texas) (1-1): Southwest got blanked 42–0 by Class 6A Lake Hamilton in its opener last week. Derrick Vasser showed spark. The Gryphons returned a good number on both sides of the ball and their play-making ability gives them a chance to compete. Lufkin’s 41-16 loss came to powerhouse Longview, but it bounced back with a 42-14 win over Nacogdoches, Texas.
Cabot (0-2) at RUSTON (La.) (1-0): Cabot has started with lopsided losses to Fayetteville and Bentonville West. QB Maddox McCrory and WR Aeneas Arnold can connect for explosive plays, but turnovers have derailed drives. Cabot will compete, but Ruston is too explosive.
No. 6 CONWAY (1-1) at Marion (6A, 2-0): Conway ran into a wall against Bentonville, but still has the firepower to overwhelm most opponents. QB Wesley Tapp and RB Trey Harris headline an offense that will re-establish the ground game. Marion could make a run in the 6A East this fall, but doesn’t have Conway’s depth. Expect Conway’s offensive line to impose its will in the second half. The Wampus Cats’ balance and depth wear down Marion over four quarters.
Muskogee (Okla.) (0-2) at No. 4 BENTONVILLE WEST (1-1): Bentonville West proved its offense is elite last week as QB Tre Thompson accounted for 6 first-half TDs in a 52-14 win over Cabot. WR Ryan Adjam has become his top target, while WRs Lane Jackson and Asher Swoboda add balance. Muskogee brings speed but lacks consistency.
Class 6A Sheridan (1-1) at No. 5 ROGERS (2-0): Rogers is riding high after beating Muskogee, Okla., 47-6. QB Jeff Regan is proving to be one of the state’s most versatile players, contributing as a passer, runner, and even receiver. Sheridan lacks the skill depth to trade blows with the Mounties. Regan’s versatility forces Sheridan’s defense to defend every inch of the field.
SPRINGDALE (1-1) at Bishop Kelley (Okla.) (1-1): Springdale’s offense broke out with 520 rushing yards in a 52-41 win over Class 6A Van Buren. QB Carson Hayter led the charge with 204 yards and 3 TDs; RBs Wilder Lherisse and Rancell Orellana each rushed for more than 100 yards. Bishop Kelley is talented but lacks the firepower to keep up. The Bulldogs’ ground game is relentless and too physical for Bishop Kelley to contain.
FS Northside (0-2) at COWETA (Okla.) (1-0): Northside has struggled defensively, giving up 61 to Greenwood last week and has been outscored 88-21 in its 2 games. RB Warren Bijou continues to run tough, but the Grizzlies are committing too many turnovers. Coweta is solid and balanced, with enough weapons to punish mistakes.
Class 6A No. 1 GREENWOOD (2-0) at Springdale Har-Ber (1-1): Har-Ber rallied to beat Class 5A Farmington 35–21 last week, with QB Brice Owens throwing 3 TD passes to WR Treyson Reith. Greenwood is playing at a high level with QB Kane Archer accounting for 7 TDs in a 61-14 win over FS Northside last week. Har-Ber will compete, but Greenwood’s precision offense is too much.
