PIGGOTT — Cross County erupted early and never looked back Friday night, defeating Piggott 54-0 at Hunter Midkiff Memorial Stadium. The Thunderbirds (1-1) scored three touchdowns in the opening five minutes, highlighted by Henry “Rico” Coffey’s 90-yard kickoff return to start the game. Coffey added two rushing scores, while Ayden Kraft powered in two first-quarter touchdowns and a two-point run.
Kolby Walker delivered on both sides of the ball, returning an interception for a touchdown before halftime and later punching in a short rushing score. Kicker Jake Brooks connected on a field goal and three extra points, giving Cross County steady special-teams production. Linebacker Sawyer Powell recovered a first-quarter fumble to set up another score.
Piggott (0-2) battled throughout despite the lopsided score. Quarterback Ben Latimer managed several first-down keepers, and running back Noah Clemons broke free for a 20-yard burst to the Thunderbird 29-yard line in the second quarter. Linemen Zane Wallace and Brayden Moore provided grit in the trenches, slowing the Cross County offense late.
The Mohawks’ defense tightened in the second half, but Coffey and Walker added third-quarter touchdowns to put the game out of reach. With a running clock, Cross County closed out the shutout to notch its first victory of the season.
