Greyhounds Blaze Past Indians in Opener
Greyhounds Blaze Past Indians in Opener
Newport 38, Marked Tree 6
NEWPORT — Newport hit the gas early and never slowed, rolling past Marked Tree 38–6 in Friday’s Week 0 matchup at Greyhound Field.
Senior quarterback Luke Reynolds efficiently piloted the Greyhounds with a first-quarter keeper and a 41-yard strike. Senior tailback Trevion “Trey” Greer delivered the knockout blows, ripping touchdown runs of 9, 82, and 61 yards to showcase both burst and power. Senior receiver/corner Dayrin “Day” Braxton supplied balance with a 50-yard scoring run and the long TD reception as Newport’s veteran skill corps stacked explosive plays behind a physical front.
Marked Tree battled back, driving to the red zone in the second quarter, but penalties spoiled a goal-to-go series. Senior quarterback Kenyon Carter finally put the Indians on the board in the fourth quarter with a deep touchdown strike, flashing the arm talent that’s been his hallmark.
Defensively, Hayden Kennedy paced Newport’s line with multiple tackles for loss and a third-quarter sack, keying a unit that never allowed Marked Tree to settle in.
