Hamburg Withstands Dumas Rally in Season Opener

Hamburg overcame Dumas’ opening-play touchdown and a third-quarter Bobcat comeback to win 36-22 Friday at Tidwell Field.

Dumas scored 17 seconds into its season opener. The Bobcats ran a reverse on the opening kickoff, and Kentz Brown reached the end zone untouched. Ke’Marion Jackson’s two-point run made it 8-0.

Hamburg answered with two first-quarter touchdown passes from Kaeden Thomas. He found Alijah Richardson for a 7-yard score, then hit Jade Canley on a slant from inside the Dumas 35. Both conversions succeeded, giving the Lions a 16-8 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter was scoreless. Dumas stopped two Hamburg threats: Jason Williams intercepted Thomas at the Dumas 45, and Carmello Burgess later recorded a drive-killing sack before a fourth-down stop kept the margin at eight through halftime.

Hamburg separated in the third quarter. Thomas threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Charles Mooney at 7:45, then connected with Canley for a 47-yard score at 5:23. A successful conversion after Canley’s touchdown made it 30-8.

Dumas responded twice before the quarter ended. Toriando Dunlap threw a 29-yard touchdown pass with 3:17 remaining, and the conversion run cut the margin to 30-16. Malike Bass then intercepted Thomas, and Dunlap found Jackson on a crossing route for a long catch-and-run touchdown with 52 seconds left. The conversion failed, leaving Hamburg ahead 30-22.

Early in the fourth, Chaysen Gordon intercepted Thomas, and Bass caught a pass to the Hamburg 5. The Lions stopped Dumas on four downs, preserving the lead. Hamburg then used its ground game to consume the clock, and Thomas scored on a keeper with 58 seconds remaining.

Hamburg finished with 439 yards, including 245 rushing. Thomas completed 10 of 20 passes for 194 yards and four touchdowns, while Richardson supplied 136 rushing yards. Canley caught four passes for 127 yards total.
