Hopson scores five times as Nashville pulls away from Fountain Lake

FOUNTAIN LAKE — Jacoby Hopson scored five touchdowns and Nashville held Fountain Lake scoreless after the first quarter to win the matchup of unbeaten teams 49-21 Friday night.
Hopson scored four times on the ground and once on a reception from DJ Jefferson. The Scrappers broke a 21-21 tie with 28 unanswered points, improving to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in 7-4A play. Fountain Lake fell to 4-1 and 1-1.
Nashville’s defense created the first opportunity, recovering a fumble on Fountain Lake’s opening possession. The Scrappers took over at the Cobra 35 and moved entirely on the ground before Hopson scored on a 10-yard run with 9:30 left in the first quarter. The successful extra point made it 7-0.
Cooper Buss answered with a touchdown pass to Kase Haire. Nate Jordan’s kick tied the game 7-7 with about eight minutes remaining. Nashville recovered the ensuing short kick, and Jefferson converted a third down with a keeper before finding Hopson on a swing pass. Hopson cut back and scored from 15 yards for a 14-7 lead with 6:57 remaining.
Fountain Lake needed one play to respond. Buss threw a screen to Peyton Harwood, who broke up the sideline for an 80-yard touchdown. Jordan’s extra point tied it 14-14 with 6:45 left.
Hopson put Nashville back ahead with another rushing touchdown at the 5:40 mark. Fountain Lake then sustained a longer possession, mixing passes and runs before Wyatt Dean scored from one yard. Jordan’s kick tied the game 21-21 with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Scrappers changed the game defensively in the second quarter. Jailyn Staggers sacked Buss, and Nashville intercepted a tipped pass on the next play. Jefferson kept the ensuing drive moving with third-down completions to Staggers and Bo Dean. Gauge Applegate caught the one-yard touchdown pass that put Nashville ahead for good, and the kick made it 28-21 with 6:04 left before halftime.
Fountain Lake kept the margin at seven when Jaylon Johnson broke up Nashville’s final pass of the half. The Scrappers nevertheless took control immediately after intermission. They secured another short kickoff and drove for Hopson’s 24-yard touchdown run. The extra point extended the lead to 35-21 with 10:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Trendon Northcross intercepted two passes in the third quarter, and Nashville turned both takeaways into touchdowns. Hopson scored his fifth touchdown with 7:10 remaining, and Jefferson later found Bryce Perrin for a 35-yard score. The successful kick made it 49-21 with 2:50 left in the period.
Fountain Lake threatened in the fourth quarter without adding points. Blake Moody came away with the ball on one possession. On another, Buss caught his own deflected fourth-down pass near the goal line, but Nashville stopped him short. The Scrappers also kept Buss out of the end zone on the game’s final play.
