Lakeside scores 22 late points, wins on two-point conversion

Hot Springs Lakeside 42, Benton 41

BENTON — James Hall threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Rahshaamon Moore with 6.3 seconds remaining, then found Paxton McElwee for the winning two-point conversion as Hot Springs Lakeside defeated Benton 42-41 Friday night.

The Rams scored the final 22 points after trailing 41-20 with 9:12 left, earning the victory in the schools’ first football meeting. Lakeside improved to 2-1; Benton moved to 1-1.

Benton quarterback Chase Cobb accounted for five touchdowns, throwing three scoring passes and running for two more. He opened the scoring with a 17-yard pass to Brenden Murdock, then added a 17-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Hall answered with touchdown passes of 19 and 22 yards to Quardarius Jackson. Weston Monson blocked the second extra point, preserving Benton’s 14-13 halftime advantage.

Cobb connected with Jake Cloud for a 37-yard touchdown on fourth-and-24 early in the third quarter. Jackson blocked the extra point. Moore’s 30-yard touchdown run and Ben Kilgore’s kick tied it at 20.

Cobb’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Max Gist restored Benton’s lead. His 11-yard scoring run and Baylor Dyson’s 39-yard return of a deflected punt stretched the margin to 41-20.

Lakeside responded with Hall’s 77-yard touchdown pass to Jackson. Daulton McKinney stopped Benton on a fourth-and-one run, giving Lakeside possession at the Panthers’ 44. Moore scored from 5 yards with 3:43 remaining, bringing the Rams within 41-34.

After a 54-yard Benton field-goal attempt missed, Lakeside took over at its 20 with 32 seconds left. Hall completed a pass to Jackson before a Benton penalty advanced the ball to the 34. Moore then turned Hall’s pass into the 66-yard touchdown, setting up McElwee’s decisive catch.

Benton’s T.J. Williams finished with 124 rushing yards on 13 carries, including a 45-yard gain. Jackson caught three touchdown passes, and Moore scored twice rushing and once receiving.
