GOSNELL — Henry Lopez kicked a 43-yard field goal with 7 seconds remaining, completing Southside’s comeback from a 16-point third-quarter deficit in a 40-37 victory over previously unbeaten Gosnell Friday night.

Trey Allen ran for 3 touchdowns and threw another. Karson McSpadden returned a kickoff for a touchdown and recovered a fourth-quarter onside kick as Southside improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in 4A-3. Mason Woods scored 4 rushing touchdowns for Gosnell, which fell to 6-1 and 3-1.

Southside held the ball for the final 4:25 after Gosnell tied it at 37. Allen converted third-and-1, then found Ayden Rodriguez on third-and-long inside the Pirates’ 30 with about a minute remaining. Allen left the field later in the possession. McSpadden replaced Allen at quarterback, carried to the 26 and spiked the ball with 10.8 seconds left. Lopez, who had missed a 42-yard attempt before halftime, made the winner with the wind at his back. Gosnell’s final pass fell incomplete.

After a fumble recovery on Gosnell’s opening possession, Allen found Boston Stott for a 31-yard touchdown. Lopez’s extra point made it 7-0 with 6:02 left in the first quarter.

Woods answered with a 41-yard touchdown run, and Jamar Allen ran for the conversion to put Gosnell ahead 8-7 with 4:42 left in the quarter. Adrian Gonzalez added a field goal on the quarter’s final play for an 11-7 lead.

Southside had a touchdown pass erased by an ineligible-receiver penalty and a touchdown run nullified by holding. Gosnell stopped the Southerners on fourth down inside the 10, then drove for Woods’ second touchdown with 56.3 seconds left in the half. The kick missed, leaving Gosnell ahead 17-7.

The Pirates made another goal-line stand to open the third quarter, stopping a fourth-down run at the 1. Woods and Jamar Allen powered a 99-yard drive, with Woods scoring his third touchdown. The conversion failed, but Gosnell led 23-7.

McSpadden fielded the ensuing kickoff near his own 10, found a crease and outran the coverage for a touchdown. Trey Allen’s conversion pass to Rodriguez cut it to 23-15. After holding erased another long Woods touchdown, Gosnell mishandled a punt snap. Kaleb Foree’s open-field tackle gave Southside possession. Allen scored on a counter run with 19.4 seconds left in the third, then passed to Stott for the tying conversion.

Southside recovered an onside kick but failed on fourth-and-5 early in the fourth quarter. Woods scored his fourth touchdown on Gosnell’s next play, and Mylan Booker’s conversion run made it 31-23.

Allen answered with a 55-yard touchdown run. Gosnell stopped the conversion, preserving a 31-29 lead with 9:14 remaining, but McSpadden recovered Lopez’s next onside kick. Southside converted fourth-and-4, and McSpadden ran to the 1. Allen scored from there for Southside’s first lead since the opening quarter. A successful conversion made it 37-31.

Jamar Allen finished Gosnell’s answering drive with a short touchdown run with 4:31 remaining. Southside stopped Woods on the conversion, keeping the score tied and setting up the winning drive.
