MARSHALL — Ty Gillihan’s 45-yard touchdown run capped a dominant first half as Melbourne (7-2, 6-0) shut out Marshall (0-9, 0-6) 45-0 Friday night.
The Bearkatz scored four first-quarter touchdowns and added 17 points in the second. Neither team scored after halftime.
Melbourne led 7-0 before Maddux Lawrence scored on a 4-yard run to finish its next scoring drive. A successful extra point made it 14-0. The Bearkatz then recovered a short kickoff at Marshall’s 21. After Jaydon Salas stopped a reverse for a 3-yard loss, Melbourne answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass. The kick extended the lead to 21-0.
The Bearkatz’ defense and Marshall’s difficulties on special teams kept giving Melbourne short fields. A high punt snap left the Bobcats with the ball near their own 3, and Daniel Toth scored on a 3-yard run on the next possession. Another successful kick made it 28-0 before the end of the first quarter.
A long reception by Tucker Hoskinds helped Melbourne move out of its own territory late in the quarter. The Bearkatz opened the second with a completion that reached the Marshall 1, then scored another touchdown and added the extra point for a 35-0 lead.
Marshall limited Melbourne to a field goal on the next scoring possession. An end-around lost ground, Ely Couch broke up a pass intended for Reed Howard, and a third-down run came up short. Esteban Ventura’s field goal made it 38-0.
Melbourne recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at midfield. After a 5-yard completion, Gillihan broke through the middle for his 45-yard touchdown run. The extra point completed the scoring.
The Bobcats continued competing in the second half, holding Melbourne scoreless. Couch also chased down Hoskinds after the long first-quarter catch, while Hayden Haynes made a tackle near the goal line on an earlier Melbourne drive.
