Morris, Mahan score twice as Pottsville wins conference opener

DOVER — Eli Morris scored on a 49-yard reception and a 34-yard end-around, intercepted a pass and helped Pottsville turn two early takeaways into touchdowns in a 42-12 victory over Dover Friday night at Jack Berry Field.
Kai Mahan added two rushing touchdowns, and quarterback Cort Johnson threw two scoring passes as the Apaches opened 4A-4 play with their fourth consecutive victory. Pottsville scored on its first three possessions of each half, building leads of 21-0 and 42-6.
Dover’s opening possession featured fullback Zeke Brown converting fourth-and-four from the Pirates’ own 30. Matthew Krentz’s option keepers and the wingback running game carried Dover into Pottsville territory before Dawson Parker recovered a fumble at the Apaches’ 34.
Penn Helton opened Pottsville’s first possession with an 11-yard run. Later, facing third-and-long, Johnson delivered a bubble screen to Morris, who accelerated through the secondary for a 49-yard touchdown. Jhostin Molina’s kick made it 7-0 with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter.
Brown converted another fourth down on Dover’s next possession, and Krentz moved the Pirates into scoring territory. Keaton Ashmore and Parker combined on a backfield stop before Morris intercepted a third-down pass near Pottsville’s 5.
Tyson Thacker supplied a first-down run to move the Apaches away from their goal line. Helton then broke a long run that Jacob Glasspoole stopped inside the 5. Mahan finished with a three-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead with 8:36 before halftime.
Pottsville’s defense forced a punt after Thacker’s tackle for loss and Mahan’s breakup of a halfback pass. The Apaches followed with another scoring drive. Thacker broke through the middle to set up first-and-goal, then scored from eight yards for a 21-0 advantage with 5:08 remaining.
Dover answered behind Brown’s long run to the Pottsville 21. Morris made the downfield tackle, but the Pirates continued the possession and converted another fourth down. Krentz reached the end zone on a short keeper with 15 seconds left, bringing Dover within 21-6 at halftime.
Johnson opened the second half with a first-down keeper, and Thacker converted third-and-seven during an 80-yard touchdown drive. Johnson finished by finding tight end Parker from 28 yards on a post route, extending the lead to 28-6 with 8:39 remaining in the third.
Glasspoole prevented another touchdown by chasing down Mahan later in the quarter. Mahan subsequently scored on an 11-yard toss sweep, making it 35-6. After another defensive stop, Helton reversed direction for a first down before Morris scored on a 34-yard end-around as the quarter expired.
Jacob Roberson delivered Dover’s second touchdown by returning the ensuing kickoff for a score. Ashmore pressured the throw on the unsuccessful two-point attempt, leaving Pottsville ahead 42-12.
Johnson converted fourth-and-seven on the Apaches’ final possession, and Jax Holland added a third-down rushing conversion. Dover recovered a late fumble before the clock expired. Molina finished six-for-six on extra points.
