MOUNTAIN PINE — Kaceston Phimvongsa scored Mount Ida’s first three touchdowns, Jett Brooks added a punt-return score and a rushing touchdown, and the Lions built a 42-6 halftime lead on the way to a 42-12 victory over Mountain Pine on Friday night.

Chris Dorrell also scored on the ground, and Buck Miller made all six extra-point attempts as Mount Ida improved to 7-0. The Lions did all of their scoring before halftime, controlling the opening half with their running game and turning a recovered kickoff into another quick touchdown.

Mount Ida’s defense forced a punt on the game’s opening possession, with Levi Weston breaking up a third-down pass. The Lions took over at their own 30 and worked downfield behind Phimvongsa and Dorrell. After Dorrell moved the ball to the Mountain Pine 14, Phimvongsa ran in untouched for the opening touchdown. Miller’s kick made it 7-0 with 7:03 left in the first quarter.

Brooks and Dorrell supplied big gains on Mount Ida’s next scoring march before Phimvongsa finished from 24 yards out. The extra point stretched the lead to 14-0 with 27 seconds left in the period. The Lions then recovered Miller’s short kickoff, keeping Mountain Pine’s offense off the field and creating another scoring opportunity.

Early in the second quarter, Hunter Brewer recovered a mishandled snap to preserve that possession. Phimvongsa took the next handoff through the middle and into the end zone for his third touchdown. Miller converted again, putting Mount Ida ahead 21-0 with 11:21 remaining in the half.

Dorrell joined the scoring with a short touchdown run at the 5:44 mark, and Miller’s fourth extra point made it 28-0. The next major blow came on special teams. Brooks fielded a bouncing punt, worked left behind his blockers and outran the coverage for a touchdown. The broadcast estimated the return at approximately 60 yards. Another Miller kick put the Lions up 35-0 with 3:24 left before halftime.

Mountain Pine answered with a long touchdown pass down the left sideline. Hayden Mosher broke up the two-point attempt, leaving the score 35-6. The Red Devils recovered an onside kick, but Mount Ida stopped the ensuing possession on downs. Brooks then broke a long run and followed it with a touchdown on a pitch to the right. Miller’s sixth extra point completed the Lions’ 42-point half.

With a running clock in the second half, Mosher intercepted a third-quarter pass. Mountain Pine added a fourth-quarter touchdown on a catch near the right sideline of the end zone, but its second two-point attempt also failed. The Lions recovered the ensuing onside kick and closed out the victory.
