Luke Sampson ran for three touchdowns and threw a 59-yard scoring pass to Tavarius Hardaway as Newport shut out Salem 42-0 Friday night.

The final margin came after a scoreless opening stretch in which Salem forced Newport to punt. The home Greyhounds did not score until 19 seconds remained in the first quarter, but their defense had already produced two turnovers and repeatedly disrupted Salem’s passing game.

Hardaway intercepted a first-quarter pass thrown under pressure and returned the ball across midfield. Later in the quarter, Rashaun Rucker recovered a Salem fumble, giving Newport possession inside the 30. Sampson converted a third down with a run before finishing that possession with a 10-yard touchdown. Destin Jackson added the first of six successful extra points.

Newport’s defensive front kept Salem from answering. Zabrien Pittman recorded a sack early in the second quarter. On the following play, pressure from Pittman, Jackson and Jesyn Russell helped stop a screen pass and force a punt.

Jataelyn Crite then supplied the next touchdown. His run around the edge converted a third down and moved Newport into Salem territory. On the next play, he took another handoff, reached the edge and cut back through a block for a 40-yard touchdown. Jackson’s kick made it 14-0 with 8:41 remaining in the first half.

Russell added a sack on Salem’s next possession. Before halftime, Crite broke another long run and carried the ball inside the 5, setting up Sampson’s 2-yard touchdown. Newport led 21-0 at the break. Jackson and Ivan Gonzalez also combined on a sack during Salem’s final possession of the half.

Newport needed only two offensive plays to score after halftime. Following a false-start penalty, Sampson kept the ball on a quarterback draw and advanced it to the Newport 41. On the next snap, he faked a handoff, found Hardaway on a short route and watched him race downfield for the 59-yard touchdown. The extra point extended the lead to 28-0.

Sampson later connected with Crite inside the Salem 20, then scrambled to the 11. ZayShawn Greer finished the possession with an 11-yard touchdown run, taking a handoff after motion across the formation and reaching the end zone untouched. The kick made it 35-0 and brought the running clock into effect.

Jakhlen Spearman helped move Newport to the goal line on the next scoring possession. He was stopped just short on successive carries before Sampson took the ball straight ahead for his third rushing touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Jackson’s final extra point made it 42-0.

Hardaway contributed again near the finish, stopping a Salem punt return inside the Newport 20. Salem’s ensuing pass fell incomplete, and the remaining seconds expired without a score. Newport had added two touchdowns in the second quarter and three in the third while preserving the shutout.
