Stillwater Forces Six Turnovers, Tops Fayetteville 23-3

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater forced six Fayetteville turnovers and defeated the Bulldogs 23-3 in Friday’s season opener at Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers struck on Fayetteville’s second offensive snap. Dian Fix intercepted a screen and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown, giving Stillwater a 7-0 lead with 11:23 left in the first quarter. Daxon Renollet added two more first-quarter interceptions as Stillwater repeatedly ended Fayetteville possessions.
Fayetteville’s defense kept the game within reach. Senior defensive back Mike Stout intercepted quarterback Satank Taptto late in the first quarter, and senior defensive lineman Kayden Walters recorded a second-quarter sack that helped force a turnover on downs. Stillwater’s only offensive touchdown of the first half came after a short field, when Bradford Mitchell scored on an 8-yard Wildcat run with 7:32 remaining.
Fayetteville answered before halftime. Junior quarterback Aron Orgil moved the Bulldogs to the Stillwater 7, including a completion to Luke Evans that helped set up first-and-goal. After the drive stalled, sophomore kicker Ethan Farthing made a 23-yard field goal with 32 seconds left, cutting the margin to 14-3.
Stillwater created separation late in the third quarter. Taptto found Peyton Campbell uncovered for a 39-yard touchdown on third-and-nine with 1:29 remaining. The extra point missed after a penalty moved the attempt back, leaving the score 20-3.
The Pioneers added a 26-yard Zachary Gabbert field goal with 7:32 left in the fourth quarter. Stillwater finished with seven sacks, while Taptto completed 15 of 29 passes for 170 yards and Campbell caught six passes for 109 yards and the touchdown. Orgil finished 15-of-27 for 118 yards, while DJ King carried eight times for 22 yards after injuries thinned Fayetteville’s backfield. Fayetteville receiver Javian Stricklin had seven catches for 70 yards, and the Bulldogs’ defense forced four turnovers on downs in addition to Stout’s interception.
