Gatewood’s Late Touchdown Lifts West Memphis Past Wynne

Darvell Gatewood scored on a 13-yard run with 2:37 remaining Friday, giving West Memphis a 39-37 victory over Wynne and its first win of the season.
The Blue Devils regained the lead after Wynne erased a 27-7 deficit. Darion Tibbs intercepted Andrew Clay III and returned the ball 27 yards for a touchdown with 5:51 left. Auggie Smith’s extra point put the Yellowjackets ahead 37-33.
West Memphis answered with a possession that started at Wynne’s 48. Tylan Young gained 14 yards, and Clay converted third-and-seven with a nine-yard keeper before Gatewood scored. Brayden Baker’s extra-point attempt was unsuccessful.
Wynne reached West Memphis’ 49 on its final possession. Braylon Davis broke up a third-down pass, and the Blue Devils stopped Curtis Scott for no gain on fourth down. Young then gained six yards for the first down that allowed West Memphis to run out the clock.
Davis opened the game with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Clay added a one-yard scoring run for a 14-0 lead. Braydon Smith answered with a 55-yard touchdown run on fourth down in the second quarter.
Jeremiah Davis returned an interception 48 yards for West Memphis, and Clay scored from six yards out to make it 27-7. Auggie Smith’s 34-yard field goal cut the halftime margin to 27-10.
Wynne scored 27 second-half points. Scott’s 42-yard completion to Kaden Dixon set up Eli Ramsey’s two-yard touchdown run with 6:47 remaining. Scott then found Caden Crawford for the two-point conversion, cutting West Memphis’ lead to 33-30.
Tibbs’ interception return followed 56 seconds later. Crawford finished with an unofficial 122 rushing yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Clay completed nine of 16 passes for 91 yards and scored twice on the ground. Gatewood had 38 yards on 11 carries, including the touchdown that decided the game.
