Dixon’s passing and receiving touchdowns help Wynne win conference opener

Wynne combined two rushing touchdowns from Caden Crawford, a touchdown pass and catch by Kaden Dixon, and timely defensive stops to defeat Brookland 44–12 Friday night at Jordan’s Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets led throughout the 5A-East opener, then answered Brookland’s fourth-quarter touchdown with two scores in 65 seconds. Wynne improved to 2–2 overall and 1–0 in conference play. Brookland also finished the night 2–2 overall.

Crawford rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Ashton McDaniel threw two touchdown passes, while Dixon supplied another on a trick play that helped Wynne build its early advantage.

Matthew Hodges helped create the first scoring opportunity, stopping Brookland’s punter after a low snap and giving Wynne possession at the Brookland 32. McDaniel finished the drive by rolling right and throwing a touchdown to Grant Oguin with 4:43 remaining in the first quarter. Auggie Smith’s extra point made it 7–0.

Wynne’s next touchdown required a third-and-goal conversion from the 25. After Tyler Fleer broke up a pass intended for Devonte Duckett, the Yellow Jackets used a reverse involving Crawford and Dixon. Dixon threw to X’Zavion Scott near the pylon for the touchdown with 9:58 left in the second quarter.

Brookland answered with Caden Rodriguez’s 4-yard touchdown run at the 6:02 mark. Wynne blocked the extra point, keeping the score 14–6. Jackson Fleer then intercepted a pass intended for Chance Isom, giving Brookland another possession near midfield, but the Yellow Jackets held without allowing points.

McDaniel’s running helped Wynne add a touchdown before halftime. His 23-yard keeper set up first-and-goal at the 4, and Crawford scored around the left side with 40 seconds remaining. Smith’s kick established a 21–6 halftime lead.

Carson Stovall’s punt return to the Brookland 33 positioned Wynne for its first second-half score. Nick Bates tackled Crawford for a loss during the possession, but Dixon’s screen reception helped move the Yellow Jackets into range for Smith’s 22-yard field goal with 7:16 left in the third quarter.

Another stop following a low punt snap gave Wynne the ball at Brookland’s 5. Crawford scored on the next play, extending the advantage to 30–6 with 6:03 remaining in the quarter.

Brookland assembled a sustained response, with Bates reaching 100 rushing yards early in the fourth quarter. Darion Tibbs stopped Bates for a loss near the goal line, but Rodriguez converted fourth-and-goal with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Fleer. The two-point attempt was stopped, leaving Wynne ahead 30–12 with 8:48 remaining.

Thirty seconds later, McDaniel found Dixon down the middle for a 52-yard touchdown. Vince Little then intercepted Rodriguez and returned the ball 13 yards to the Brookland 7. Eli Ramsey scored on the next snap with 7:13 left, and Smith’s extra point completed Wynne’s scoring.
