DARDANELLE — Cruz Coatney threw three touchdown passes and added a 26-yard scoring run as Greenwood defeated Dardanelle 49-7 Friday at Bob Keenan Field.
Coatney completed 23 of 29 passes for 327 yards and rushed twice for 31 yards, according to the broadcast’s unofficial postgame statistics. Rhett Holloway added 66 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries as the Bulldogs improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the 5A West.
Greenwood scored touchdowns on its first five possessions. The Bulldogs established their passing game immediately after stopping Dardanelle on fourth down, then let Holloway finish their first march. His 2-yard touchdown run and Landon Franklin’s extra point made it 7-0 with 6:16 left in the first quarter.
Cooper Webb helped set up the next score with two catches that moved Greenwood to the Dardanelle 25. Coatney extended the play and found Ty Karnes alone in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown. Franklin’s kick stretched the lead to 14-0 at the 3:27 mark.
Dardanelle answered with an 80-yard drive that crossed into the second quarter. CJ Cursh’s fourth-down run kept the possession alive, and Jayvon Chaten finished it with a 5-yard touchdown run out of the Sand Lizards’ wildcat package. Leo Martinez’s extra point pulled Dardanelle within 14-7 with 11:42 left in the half.
Greenwood quickly restored its two-touchdown advantage. Brayden Brewer secured the ensuing onside kick near midfield, and Coatney found Brayden Renick for a 40-yard touchdown on third-and-10. Franklin’s kick made it 21-7 with 10:26 remaining.
The Sand Lizards mounted another long drive, but Drew Dickinson’s fourth-down stop ended the threat. Greenwood then went back to work through the air. Brewer’s catches helped move the Bulldogs inside the 10 before a penalty pushed them back. Coatney responded with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Canada, who won a contested catch in the end zone. The successful conversion gave Greenwood a 28-7 lead with 31 seconds left before halftime.
The Bulldogs secured another onside kick to open the second half and needed only three plays to score. Completions to Canada and Renick set up Holloway’s 17-yard touchdown run with 11:06 left in the third quarter.
Chaten interrupted Greenwood’s next possession with an interception, but the Bulldogs’ defense forced a punt. Terry McGinister made a tackle for loss and Elijah Rillamas batted down a pass during the stop.
Coatney then supplied the decisive third-down play himself. Facing third-and-15, he escaped pressure and broke free for a 26-yard touchdown with 4:55 remaining in the third. The extra point made it 42-7 and started the running clock.
McGinister recovered a fumbled pitch on Dardanelle’s next possession. Webb’s 29-yard catch helped turn that takeaway into another touchdown, with Ty Holt scoring from the 1 early in the fourth quarter. Franklin’s kick completed the scoring.
Canada finished with six catches for 83 yards; Webb had four for 73. Greenwood hosts Farmington next, while Dardanelle hosts Alma.
