QUITMAN — Jack Sexton threw four touchdown passes, Brooks Black returned an interception for a score and Quitman celebrated homecoming with a 48-12 victory over Yellville-Summit on Friday night.

The Bulldogs scored 34 consecutive points after surrendering an opening-drive touchdown, then answered the Panthers’ second score with a 60-yard strike to Cody Haynes just before halftime. Quitman improved to 4-2 overall and earned its first 2-3A victory after opening conference play with losses to Melbourne and Newport. Both teams are 1-2 in the league; Yellville-Summit fell to 2-4 overall.

Yellville-Summit moved quickly on its first possession, with Westin Swearingen completing passes to Kolton Layton and Easton Voight before throwing the opening touchdown. Jaydan Owens stopped the Panthers’ two-point attempt, keeping the deficit at six.

Quitman responded with a drive that included a scrambling completion from Sexton to John Waggoner. Dylan McThorn finished from short range, and Jackson Boyd kicked the extra point for a 7-6 lead with 7:19 remaining in the first quarter.

Another downfield catch by Waggoner helped put Quitman inside the 10 on its next scoring possession. The Bulldogs pushed across another short touchdown for a 13-6 advantage with three minutes left in the quarter, though the extra point was blocked.

Black turned the next scoring opportunity into a defensive highlight. On third-and-long early in the second quarter, he intercepted Swearingen and returned the ball for a touchdown. The kick was short, leaving Quitman ahead 19-6 with 11:45 to play before halftime.

Sexton and Owens then punished Yellville-Summit for leaving space outside. Facing fourth down, Sexton connected with Owens for a touchdown announced as 30 yards. McThorn added the two-point conversion, extending the lead to 27-6.

Braiden Riley made the next two decisive plays. The senior intercepted a screen pass and gave Quitman possession just inside the Panthers’ 30. On the next snap, he caught Sexton’s scoring pass into the corner of the end zone. Boyd’s kick made it 34-6 with 5:39 remaining.

Rusty Goodall, who had intercepted Sexton in the first quarter, gave Yellville-Summit an offensive spark before the break. He caught a pass over the middle and took it to the end zone. Quitman again stopped the two-point attempt, keeping its lead at 34-12.

With 48 seconds left when the Panthers prepared to kick off, Quitman still had time for one more answer. Sexton found Haynes for a 60-yard touchdown, and Boyd’s extra point sent the Bulldogs into halftime ahead 41-12.

Sexton added a 40-yard touchdown pass on fourth down in the third quarter. The ensuing extra point completed the scoring, and Quitman held Yellville-Summit scoreless after halftime. The Bulldogs visit Marshall on Oct. 16, while the Panthers host Mountain View.
