HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 11 Melbourne (7-2, 6-0) at No. 9 NEWPORT (7-2, 6-0): The winner gets the conference championship and a bye to open the playoffs. Newport’s offense is multiple and led by quarterback Luke Sampson, who has 27 total touchdowns — 14 passing and 13 rushing. Jataelyn Crite has carried the family name well this season, averaging 16.2 yards per carry and scoring 6 rushing touchdowns. Melbourne counters with a stingy defense that has 3 shutouts in its past 4 games. Junior Abe Cooper has passed for 1,741 yards and 18 touchdowns; Ty Gillihan has rushed for 699 yards and 8 touchdowns. Wren and Lawrence are the top 2 wideouts for the Bearkatz. This will go down to the wire, and Newport gets the edge at home.
WEEK 3 PREDICTIONS (favored teams in ALL CAPS and highlighted in orange)
1-3A
ALL GAMES ON FRIDAY
No. 14 CHARLESTON (5-4, 4-1) at Lavaca (6-3, 3-2): Charleston played Mansfield to the wire last week and will play for the No. 2 seed this week against a Lavaca team that was off last week. The Golden Arrows can be as high as the No. 2 seed or as low as the No. 4 seed. Charleston’s Lukas Burleson has 1,384 yards total offense and 17 total touchdowns. Lavaca has looked like an upper-echelon team at times. A 21-6 loss to Cedarville was its biggest setback to date. Lavaca will be the No. 4 seed with a loss.
Greenland (4-5, 1-4) at No. 17 CEDARVILLE (6-3, 3-2): Cedarville has been the surprise 3A team this season with Spencer Adams navigating, and it earns a playoff date at Perryville with a win. Greenland had a good start to the season and could get the No. 5 seed with a win and a Paris loss. Greenland sophomore EJ Johnson has 820 yards and 9 touchdowns.
PARIS (3-6, 1-4) at West Fork (2-7, 0-5): Paris put itself in a good spot for the playoffs with a win over West Fork, thanks to its 35-33 win over Greenland in Week 9. Paris has also competed with vigor this year, including a 27-19 loss to Charleston and a close loss to Lavaca. Paris has scored at least 19 points in each of its past 6 games, so it gets the nod over the Tigers.
OPEN No. 1 Mansfield
2-3A
THURSDAY’S GAMES
Marshall (0-9, 0-6) at YELLVILLE-SUMMIT (2-7, 1-5): Weston Swearingen has been a dynamic playmaker for the Panthers this season. He has a bright future and will be tough on defenses for 2 more seasons.
No. 16 QUITMAN (7-2, 4-2) at Mountain View (5-4, 4-2): This game will decide who will be the No. 3 seed and host the No. 4 seed from the 1-3A next week. Quitman quarterback Jack Sexton has 2,325 total yards and 31 total touchdowns. Junior Dylan McThorn leads the Bulldogs with 550 yards rushing. Mountain View’s defense has been salty over the past 3 weeks with 2 shutouts and 8 points allowed in its 3-game winning streak.
Riverview (1-8, 1-5) at SALEM (2-7, 2-4): Not many people would have thought this game would decide the fifth and final playoff spot, but here we are. Aidan Province and Tripp Martin have rushed for more than 400 yards each this season for Salem, which won the state title in 2024. Riverview’s offense is led by seniors Austin Hill and Braxton Hobbs. Salem has the experience and tradition and should clinch a playoff spot with the win.
FRIDAY’S GAME
No. 11 Melbourne (7-2, 6-0) at No. 9 NEWPORT (7-2, 6-0): The winner gets the conference championship and a bye to open the playoffs. Newport’s multiple offense is led by quarterback Luke Sampson, who has 27 total touchdowns this season, 14 passing and 13 rushing. Jataelyn Crite has carried the family name well this season, averaging 16.2 yards per carry and scoring 6 rushing touchdowns. Melbourne counters with a stingy defense that has recorded 3 shutouts in the last 4 games. Junior Abe Cooper has passed for 1,741 yards and 18 touchdowns while Ty Gillihan has rushed for 699 yards and 8 touchdowns. Wren and Lawrence are the top 2 wideouts for the Bearkatz. Newport gets the edge at home.
3-3A
THURSDAY’S GAMES
Harrisburg (5-4, 3-3) at PALESTINE-WHEATLEY (2-7, 2-4): Two weeks ago, things didn’t look great for Palestine-Wheatley. Now, itis one win away from clinching the last playoff spot if it can post a third straight win. Harrisburg will be the No. 4 or 5 seed with a win, depending on Hoxie’s outcome with Walnut Ridge. Grayson Harkey leads the Harrisburg rushing attack with 1,269 yards and 10 touchdowns; senior Bryar Jones can beat teams with his arm or his legs. Palestine-Wheatley gets the edge based on the past couple of weeks, but it is literally a coin toss in my opinion.
No. 15 OSCEOLA (6-3, 5-1) at No. 10 Rivercrest (7-2, 5-1): The playoff picture is cut-and-dried for Osceola. The Seminoles win the conference and earn a No. 1 seed with a win, and they will be the No. 3 seed with a loss. Their 26-20 win over Walnut Ridge was a lesson in how to outperform an opponent in every phase of the game. Rivercrest shrugged off its loss to Walnut Ridge in Week 8 with a 41-7 beatdown of Hoxie. Both teams are dangerous on offense, but the Seminoles have the edge defensively, so they are the pick in a close ballgame.
No. 8 WALNUT RIDGE (7-2, 5-1) at Hoxie (5-4, 4-2): The Bobcats played well until Osceola unveiled a perfect game plan last week. Now, Walnut Ridge needs help to win the conference title, and it will be cheering for Rivercrest. The Hoxie is no pushover, beating Osceola 2 weeks ago in overtime 26-20. If Hoxie wins, it could be as high as a No. 2 seed or as low as the No. 4 seed. A Hoxie loss and a Harrisburg win, could drop it all the way to the No. 5 seed. Plenty of eyes will be on this game around the state because no one wants to see a 3-3A team in the first round.
FRIDAY’S GAME
Piggott (0-9, 0-6) at MANILA (0-9, 0-6): The winner of this game gets much-needed confidence heading into the offseason. The Mohawks have lost 49 consecutive games dating back to 2021 when it beat Palestine-Wheatley in Week 9. Manila won last year’s contest 43-6; Piggott owns a 10-8 edge in the series since 2008.
4-3A
THURSDAY’S GAMES
Conway Christian (1-8, 1-5) at PERRYVILLE 5-4, 4-2): The Mustangs have earned the No. 3 playoff spot and will host a home playoff game next week. Tanner Frith has generated 1,479 yards of offense and 14 touchdowns. The Mustangs are rushing for 226 yards per game. Ryan Ross has 29 catches for 402 yards and 5 touchdowns; senior Aaron Evans leads the defense with 5 tackles for loss. A win gives Perryville momentum heading into the playoffs.
Danville (4-5, 2-4) at No. 2 ATKINS (8-1, 6-0): The Red Devils have clinched the conference title and will head into the playoffs next week as one of the hottest teams in Class 3A. They will most likely host Salem next week and have home-field advantage up until the semifinals. Danville has been eliminated from the playoffs, and some younger guys have gotten playing time due to injuries.
Two Rivers (0-9, 0-6) at CUTTER MORNING STAR (3-6, 3-3): The Eagles are flying high after 3 wins a row. Jacob Smith has passed for 2,147 yards and 22 touchdowns, and Kingstyn Hollingsworth has caught 70 passes for 864 yards and 10 touchdowns.
FRIDAY’S GAME
Jessieville (3-6, 3-3) at No. 7 GLEN ROSE (6-3, 5-1): Glen Rose will be the No. 2 seed next week and has a home playoff game. Leyton Baldwin had a Pick-6 interception return against Conway Christian. Gage Hood and Peyton Swayze had rushing touchdowns in the win as well. Jessieville will be the No. 4 or 5 seed in the playoffs and needs good momentum going into the postseason.
7-3A
THURSDAY’S GAMES
HARMONY GROVE O.C. (3-6, 2-4) at Parkers Chapel (3-6, 2-4): The winner gets to play another week; the loser gets to start the offseason. Parkers Chapel has bounced back from a winless season last year to win 3 games for the second time since 2019. Parkers Chapel averages close to 20 points per game. Harmony Grove O.C. put itself in position for a playoff berth with a win over Horatio last week.
Cossatot River (0-9, 0-6) at No. 6 SMACKOVER (7-2, 4-2): The Buckaroos fell to Prescott, but they remain a top team heading into the playoffs. Trason Parlor has 22 total touchdowns. Madison McElroy and Kieundre Billingley have combined for 1,435 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns this season.
No. 4 PRESCOTT (8-1, 6-0) at Centerpoint (6-3, 4-2): The Curly Wolves forced 3 turnovers in the second half against Smackover to overcome a 22-14 deficit and clinch the conference title. Owen Glass had a fumble recovery and returned an interception 40 yards. Brian Woodley had 2 sacks and a forced fumble. Des Prater and Tiden McKillion combined for 229 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns to lead the offense. Centerpoint will most likely be the No. 4 seed. Ely Welch has 849 yards of total offense with 14 total touchdowns.
FRIDAY’S GAME
No. 5 BISMARCK (7-2, 5-1) at Horatio (1-8, 1-5): The Lions clinched the No. 2 seed with a win over Centerpoint last week led by Cayden Burch’s 4 total touchdowns. Clayton Martinez also scored a 51-yard touchdown. Horartio has endured uncertainty since the summer and will look forward to 2027 with a permanent head coach in place.
8-3A
THURSDAY’S GAME
Dumas (1-7, 0-5) at DREW CENTRAL (1-7, 1-4): The Pirates shocked the state with a 22-20 win over Helena, taking the Cougars out of their best chance to win the conference title. Cameron Sanders has been a bell-cow runner. Dumas Coach Rod Smith has a bright future with Kentz Brown and Torian Dunlap. If the Bobcats can shore up their defense next season, they can contend.
FRIDAY’S GAMES
No. 3 FORDYCE (6-2, 4-1) at McGehee (4-4, 3-2): The Redbugs have looked like a championship contender over the past 2 weeks. Jamartez Stroud picked off another pass last week, bringing his total to 9 for the season. Andreal Ellison has 14 passing scores this season. The Owls can finish anywhere from the No. 2 seed to the No. 5 seed.
No. 12 Helena (5-3, 3-2) at No. 14 LAKE VILLAGE (7-2, 4-1): Arlando Wilson Jr. has 1,228 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing this season; Chad Dixon Jr. has added 718 yards and 6 scores for Lake Village. This game likely decides the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game next week. Helena fell flat last week against Drew Central. Isaiah Brown leads the Cougars with 721 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing this season.
OPEN No. 18 Rison
