HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 3 FAYETTEVILLE (2-0) at Texarkana, Texas (3-0)
Fayetteville heads to the Arkansas-Texas border with a new leader in junior QB Hank Hendrix, who has given the Bulldogs stability and playmaking ability through the air. Hendrix’s top weapon is all-state WR Catavion Taylor. RB Kaleb Johnson gives the Bulldogs balance with his running between the tackles..
Texas High’s up-tempo attack will test Fayetteville’s secondary, but the Bulldogs counter with CB Brody Jones at cornerback and Arkansas commit Kyndrick Williams at safety. That duo gives Fayetteville the ability to play tight coverage and challenge throws outside the numbers.
This matchup will be decided up front. If Fayetteville’s offensive line protects Hendrix, and allows Johnson to establish the run, the Bulldogs can control tempo. On defense, Fayetteville’s back-end playmakers must tackle in space to limit the Tigers’ explosive drives.
WEEK 3 PREDICTIONS (favored team in ALL CAPS and highlighted)
WEEK 3 GAMES INVOLVING TOP 10 TEAMS
Lee’s Summit North, Mo. (0-3) at No. 2 BENTONVILLE (2-0): Senior QB Cole Slepecki runs Bentonville’s offense with confidence. Look for RB Chris Ficklin, one of the state’s most physical runners, to be a problem for Lee’s Summit North. Outside, WR Blair Irvin III is a matchup problem for Lee Summit North’s undersized secondary. LB Eli Pearson and CB Tristan Brown make plays and steal possessions for Bentonville.
No. 7 LITTLE ROCK CHRISTIAN (1-1) at Class 6A West Memphis (0-2): The Warriors have multiple offensive weapons and size on both lines. Their challenge will be executing on the road against a West Memphis team looking for its first win. LRCA’s speed on the edges gives them the edge in this matchup.
No. 8 Pulaski Academy (0-2) at HIGHLAND PARK, Texas (2-1): Pulaski Academy heads to Dallas to take on tradition-rich Highland Park. The Bruins are seeking their first win after losing a back-and-forth affair with West Monroe, La. when the Rebels were able to pull away for the win in the fourth quarter. Highland Park’s size and depth will be a challenge, but Pulaski Academy goes punch-for-punch on the road.
No. 10 LITTLE ROCK CENTRAL (1-1) at Rogers Heritage (0-2): The Tigers’ offense has plenty of big-play potential. Jayden Reed is a reliable target, and RB Chris Johnson provides power in the run game. Central’s defense has the edge up front and should be able to pressure Heritage into mistakes. Heritage continues to search for rhythm offensively. QB Julian Castaneda leads the War Eagles with RB Evan Gordon providing power between the tackles.
GAMES INVOLVING UNRANKED 7A TEAMS
Class 6A LR Catholic (1-1) at NORTH LITTLE ROCK (0-2): Sophomore QB Robert Jackson shows promise for NLR, with WR Jamie Lee his top option. RB Jaleal Colvin is a workhorse in the run game. NLR must cut penalties and finish drives if it wants to defeat Catholic.
Class 6A FS SOUTHSIDE (2-0) at LR Southwest (0-2) Southwest QB Montrell Thompson has flashed playmaking ability, but turnovers have been costly. Southside brings a balanced attack with QB Blake Forsgren distributing the ball, WR Peyton Zimmerman making plays outside, and RB Malachi Warren bruising between the tackles.
BYE-WEEK UPDATES
No. 4 ROGERS (3-0): QB Jeff Regan remains one of the state’s most dangerous dual-threats, and he has plenty of help from WRs Braxton Lindsey, Dracen Voack, Aiden Ikenberry, and Parker Nix. The Mounties’ offense is firing on all cylinders, and the bye comes at a good time before West play begins.
No. 5 BENTONVILLE WEST (2-1): QB Tre’ Thompson leads a balanced attack led by RB Braden Nash and WRs Will Davis and Ryan Adjam. On defense, LB Quentin Lavalais is a tackling machine, and S Ashton Jones steadies the back end. The Wolverines get an extra week to prepare for conference action.
No. 6 CONWAY (2-1): The Wampus Cats’ defense has been sharp; their offense has leaned on physical O-line play to wear opponents down. The open week provides a chance to fine-tune before 7A Central play begins.
No. 9 CABOT (0-3): Cabot has faced a demanding schedule — losing to No. 2 Bentonville 66-24, No. 5 Bentonville West, and Ruston, La., by a combined 181-52. The Panthers will use the bye to regroup and lean on their offensive line and physical running game before heading.
SPRINGDALE (2-1): Springdale’s offense leans on bruising RB Rancel Orellana and all-around athlete Carson Hayter; LB Easton Hahn and LB Shem Paul lead a physical defense.
SPRINGDALE HAR-BER (1-2): QB Bryce Owens and RB Reed McAllister carry the offense, with WR Treyson Reith stretching the field. WR Austin Sandoval adds speed, and TE Jack Gilder provides a reliable target.
FORT SMITH NORTHSIDE (0-3): QB Drew Jackson has taken command of the Grizzlies offense, with WR Keelan Mendoza and WR Vonjay Johnson as his primary targets. RBs Warren Bijou and JaLell Covin give Northside a physical ground game.
