CLASS 6A GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 5 SYLVAN HILLS (4-1, 1-1) at No. 3 El Dorado (4-1, 2-0)

El Dorado has won 4 in a row over Sylvan Hills, including 52-13 last fall. Wildcats Coach Chris Hill took over at El Dorado in 2023 after 3 seasons at Sylvan Hills. First-year Sylvan Hills Coach Mark Kelley played QB for Hill when Hill was head coach at Morrilton about 20 years ago.
El Dorado never trailed in last week’s 28-21 victory at Marion, leading 7-0 after the first quarter, 21-7 at halftime, and 28-14 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats rushed for 234 yards, including 115 yards and 3 touchdowns from tailback Jeremy Samuel despite not handling a carry after halftime. Jakori Lumsey rushed for El Dorado’s fourth TD in the fourth quarter. El Dorado converted 8 of 16 third-down situations and 1 of 3 on fourth down.
Sylvan Hills came up with what might be its most significant win since a 2020 quarterfinal victory over Little Rock Parkview when it went on the road to beat 2-time defending 6A East champion Benton 40-35. Bears tailback Isaiah Howell ran 62 yards for the go-ahead TD in the final minute. Sylvan Hills rushed for 361 yards and outgained Benton 572-320. E.J. Duckery topped 100 yards rushing at Benton, including TD runs of 51 and 33 yards, while Lakobe Brent caught 2 TD passes from QB Tyler Hampton, who passed for 229 yards and 2 TDs. The Sylvan Hills defense allowed 61 rushing yards on 39 carries.
This matchup could play a significant role in the conference title hunt, and it will be settled in the trenches. Sylvan Hills averages more than 210 rushing yards, but it goes against an El Dorado defense that held Marion’s strong running game to less than 100 yards a week ago. We think the Bears find enough running room to pull off a second consecutive massive road win.

6A EAST

No. 10 Sheridan (2-3, 1-1) at No. 6 BENTON (3-2, 1-1): Benton has won 3 in a row in this series, including 72-25 in 2024. These schools are separated by less than 24 miles. Sheridan suffered a 48-42 home loss last week to Jonesboro, when the Yellowjackets’ final drive ended deep in Hurricane territory. Sheridan outgained Jonesboro 498-477, but lost the turnover margin 2-1. Yellowjackets tailback Zay Stephens recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season last week against Jonesboro. Offensive linemen Bradley Sturdivant and Eythan Cowden continue to impress opposing coaches. Benton’s 24-game conference winning streak ended last week with a 40-35 home loss to Sylvan Hills. The Panthers led 7-6 after a quarter and 21-14 at halftime. The game was tied at 28-28 after 3 quarters, and Benton led 35-28 before Sylvan Hills scored the game’s final 12 points. Benton outpassed Sylvan Hills 259-230, but the Bears outrushed the Panthers 342-61. Playoff positioning is on the line after both teams suffered tight losses a week ago, but it’s Benton pulling this one out as the Panthers continue to get healthy after missing several starters in the nonconference portion of the schedule.

LR Catholic (2-3, 1-1) at No. 9 JONESBORO (2-3, 1-1): Jonesboro has won 3 of the past 4 games against Little Rock Catholic, but the Rockets rallied last fall to beat Jonesboro 26-21, their first win over the Golden Hurricane since 2018. Catholic ended a 3-game losing streak last week with a strong 44-28 victory over West Memphis on Homecoming. The Rockets continued to play 2 QBs against the Blue Devils: Philips Blair rushed for more than 100 yards and a TD; Hunter Markham topped 150 total yards with 2 TDs, including a 74-yard run. The Catholic defense recorded eight sacks against West Memphis, with Sawyer Bigby posting 2. Jonesboro claimed a 48-42 road victory last week at Sheridan, led by senior QB Asa Myers (10-22 passing, 203 yards, 3 TDs). Seven Hurricane receivers caught passes, led by Kamari Fisher (4-35) and Jaylen Heard (2-70). Tailback T.J. Brown ran 21 times for 113 yards and 3 TDs. Kenneth Douglas (10) led Jonesboro in tackles; Jacques Jordan, Jaylen Alexander, Noah Wendell, and Desmond Golden finished with 8 stops apiece. Alexander, Clarence Mucherson, and Corien Bullard intercepted passes. The winner of this game earns a crucial tiebreaker and remains in contention for the league title.

No. 7 MARION (3-2, 1-1) at W. Memphis (0-5, 0-2): West Memphis officially leads the all-time series 19-3, but Marion has won the last 4 contests on the field. The Patriots forfeited a 33-3 on-field win in 2021. These schools are separated by less than 5 miles in Crittenden County. Marion’s 48-6 victory last season was the Patriots’ largest margin of victory over West Memphis. West Memphis has lost 8 in a row dating back to last fall, but the Blue Devils scored a season-high in points (28)  last week in a loss at Little Rock Catholic. West Memphis was sacked 8 times and allowed more than 200 yards rushing. Marion outgained El Dorado 291-267 a week ago, but never led in a 28-21 defeat. Marion senior QB Zayden Walker completed 18 of 27 passes for 199 yards and a 67-yard TD toss to Aamoni Wren. Tailback Jeremiah Dent rolled up 131 total yards and two rushing scores. Defensive linemen Makhi Guyton (6 tackles, 1 for loss) and Ryan Blackwell (5 stops and a sack), and safety Kejeris Hill (5 tackles) led the Marion defense.

No. 5 SYLVAN HILLS (4-1, 1-1) at No. 3 El Dorado (4-1, 2-0): See Class 6A Game of the Week.

6A WEST

Siloam Springs (2-3, 0-2) at No. 1 GREENWOOD (5-0, 2-0): Greenwood has beaten Siloam Springs 12 times in a row, including 62-7 last fall. Siloam Springs lost 38-0 last week to Van Buren, trailing 7-0 after a quarter, 17-0 at halftime, and 24-0 after 3 quarters. Siloam Springs has gotten good play from tailback Mason Short, Boaz Benson, and Hudson Loughridge. Greenwood dominated the second half last week against Russellville, outscoring the Cyclones 27-0 after halftime for a 50-13 victory. The Bulldogs won their 31st consecutive game, outgaining the Cyclones 605-245, including a strong effort from QB Kane Archer (229 yards passing, TD; 161 rushing yards, 4 TDs). Wesley Raggio (62 yards rushing) and Mario Dunbar (38 yards with a TD) helped the Greenwood running game. Brayden Renick (10-86) and Braxton Canada (9-77) were the leading pass-catchers. Greenwood, which allowed zero passing yards to Russellville, is starting to round into shape, and the Bulldogs will not let up this week.

No. 2 SHILOH CHRISTIAN (3-2, 1-1) at No. 8 FS Southside (4-1, 1-1): Shiloh Christian stopped Fort Smith Southside 38-20 a year ago. Mountain Home topped FS Southside 39-21 2 weeks ago, while Shiloh Christian beat the Bombers 55-41 last week.

FS Southside won its first home game in a month last week, getting touchdowns from 6 players in a 49-44 victory over Lake Hamilton. Mavericks QB Blake Forsgren (12-17 passing, 165 yards, 3 TDs), tailback Terrell Warren (13-131 rushing, TD), Colton Vingthong (2 rushing TDs), Peyton Zimmerman (6-104 receiving, 2 TDs), and Barry Lowrimore (2-29 receiving, TD) led the way. The game was tied at 21-21 at halftime, and it was 28-28, before Southside linebacker Malachi Warren returned a fumble 22 yards for a score and a 35-28 lead. Shiloh Christian topped Mountain Home last week, 55-41. The Saints led 26-14 after a quarter, 33-28 at halftime, and 41-34 after 3 quarters. Junior QB Cole Creighton completed 18 of 28 passes for 349 yards and 4 TDs. The Saints rushed for 240 yards, led by Max Eldridge’s 103 yards and 3 TDs; Charlie Kroell added 95 rushing yards. Receivers Cohen Beach (5-139, 2 TDs) and Chandler Kemphad (6-122, 2 TDs) led the pass-catchers. Sophomore Tate Barnard (11 tackles against the Bombers) and Zander Salter (10 stops) led the Shiloh defensive effort, This could be another tight game in the 6A West this week, but Shiloh Christian’s high-powered offense (averages more than 526 yards and 45 points per game) pushes the Saints past the vastly improved Mavericks this week.

Russellville (0-5, 0-2) at No. 4 MOUNTAIN HOME (4-1, 1-1): Mountain Home has won 4 of the past 6 meetings with Russellville, including 34-14 in 2024.
Russellville competed well for a half last week against top-ranked Greenwood, trailing 23-13 at halftime before falling 50-13. The Cyclones rushed for 245 yards, led by Sam Callahan’s 135 yards and a TD; Marcellus Olson-Patton added 77 yards and a score.
Mountain Home swapped haymakers last week with second-ranked Shiloh Christian before falling 55-41 in a game tied at 41-41 in the fourth quarter. Bombers tailback Barrett Miller scored 3 TDs at Shiloh, including 1 in the third quarter that gave Mountain Home a 34-33 lead following a blocked field goal attempt. Brantlee Phillips finished with 2 TDs; Drew Vigna stood out for Mountain Home on defense. “We have to tackle much better this week,” Mountain Home Coach Steve Ary said. “We need to take better care of the football and get lined up to their multiple formations.”

LAKE HAMILTON (2-3, 1-1) at Van Buren (3-2, 2-0): Lake Hamilton won 41-3 a year ago. These teams have beaten Siloam Springs over the past 2 weeks, with Lake Hamilton claiming a 53-20 decision on Sept. 26, and Van Buren taking down a 38-0 win last week.
Van Buren recorded its first shutout win since 2020 last week at Siloam Springs. Junior QB Hayden Williford completed 22 of 32 passes at Siloam Springs for 309 yards and 2 TDs, while sophomore tailback Hayden Christenberry ran 18 times for 104 yards and a score. Six Pointers caught passes, led by Austin Riggs (5-103); Philip Steele and Carter Kelley hauled in TD passes. Darren Mays (10 tackles at Siloam), Jaxson Silvers (8 stops), and Jace Ponder (7 tackles) led the defense.
Lake Hamilton lost 49-44 last week at Fort Smith Southside after leading much of the first half. The Wolves rolled up 485 yards, rushing for 255 and passing for 229 yards. QB Jace Bohannon completed 19 of 29 passes for 229 yards and 3 TDs and rushed for 4 TDs. Coy Autrey rushed 22 times for 134 yards. Carson Jackson (9-100 receiving, TD) led the pass catchers, with Zayde Cox and Brayden Goodale also catching TD passes. Mason Peters (8 tackles at Southside), Blaine Sears (5 stops), and Fabian Garcia (5 tackles) sparked the Lake Hamilton defense. This is a crucial game for playoff positioning, and Lake Hamilton’s running game and evolving passing game give the Wolves a slight edge this week.
