GREENWOOD — Cruz Coatney threw five touchdown passes, including two to Braxton Canada, as Greenwood defeated previously unbeaten Farmington 42-14 Friday night at Smith-Robinson Stadium for its 80th consecutive home victory.
Canada caught 13 passes for 201 yards, with 12 receptions for 192 yards before halftime. Coatney completed 20 of 32 passes for 262 yards as the Bulldogs improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the 5A-West. Farmington dropped to 6-1 and 3-1.
Greenwood’s defense prevented an early interception from becoming a scoring opportunity. Farmington took possession at its 37 after a tipped pass, but an incomplete fourth-down throw gave the Bulldogs the ball at the Cardinals’ 44. Canada’s 20-yard reception and Coatney’s nine-yard keeper helped set up Mario Dunbar, who scored from two yards with 7:46 left in the first quarter.
Coatney converted fourth down later in the quarter, finding Brayden Renick underneath for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:58 remaining. Canada then caught a 22-yard pass and followed it with a 48-yard scoring reception, pulling a defender into the end zone as Greenwood went ahead 21-0 just 27 seconds into the second quarter.
Bryer Hackler disrupted another Farmington possession with a sack, forced fumble and recovery. The Cardinals eventually answered through the air: Slade Norwood found Anthony Steinbeck for a reception to the Greenwood 14, then connected with Jett Pierce on a 20-yard touchdown after Gunner Flanary had produced a six-yard loss.
Farmington recovered the ensuing onside kick, giving it an opportunity to build on Pierce’s score. Instead, Greenwood stopped the Cardinals on fourth down, with Hackler and Charlie Hudnall collapsing the pocket. Canada’s diving 39-yard catch put the Bulldogs at the 7, and Cooper Webb caught Coatney’s touchdown pass with 2:37 left in the half.
Greenwood forced another turnover on downs when Farmington could not convert fourth-and-one near its own 30. The Bulldogs took over at the Cardinals’ 28 with 1:37 remaining. Coatney moved them into position and rolled right to find Canada for a six-yard touchdown with 27 seconds left, making it 35-7.
Terry McGinister ended Farmington’s first possession after halftime with a third-down sack. On Greenwood’s next scoring drive, Rhett Holloway broke through traffic for a 13-yard gain before Coatney found Ty Holt alone for an 18-yard touchdown. The successful extra point made it 42-7 with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter and started the running clock.
Farmington’s Tucker Wood added a 57-yard touchdown reception with 6:30 left in the fourth quarter. McGinister was credited with three sacks in the broadcast’s postgame report, while Renick, Webb and Holt each caught a touchdown pass.
