Jergins’ Touchdown, Interception Help Mayflower Shut Out Hope

HOPE — Martrell Jergins caught seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown and intercepted a pass as Mayflower defeated Hope 21-0 Friday. The Eagles improved to 2-0 after scoring all their points before halftime.

Hope stopped Mayflower’s opening possession on downs, but the Eagles scored on the ensuing series. Cruz Foster recovered a fumble in the end zone following a sack of Jaiden Brown. Cade Cowdery’s extra point made it 7-0.

Carter Smith later found Jergins for a fourth-down touchdown, giving Mayflower a 14-0 lead after one quarter. The score followed another turnover by Hope.

Chris Blackmon scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter. Smith’s completion to Callen McCaghren had set up first-and-goal at the 3. Blackmon carried twice to finish the drive, and Cowdery’s kick made it 21-0.

Fernando Perez recovered a fumble for Hope during the second quarter. Brown subsequently completed a fourth-down pass to Cayden Haywood and ran 26 yards on third-and-11, reaching Mayflower’s 11. The Eagles stopped the Bobcats on fourth down at the 10 with 51 seconds remaining.

Perez sacked Smith on the final play before halftime.

Jergins intercepted a pass on Hope’s opening possession of the third quarter. Deshawn Keener answered with an interception on Mayflower’s ensuing series.

Blackmon later gained 18 and 13 yards on consecutive carries. Hope stopped that possession on fourth-and-15 and kept Mayflower scoreless throughout the second half.

D’Aireion Franklin recovered a fourth-quarter fumble for Hope’s third takeaway. Linebacker JJ Gulley finished with 13 tackles and a sack; Joel Bello added 11 tackles and a forced fumble.

Mayflower retained possession for the final 3:45. Blackmon finished with 120 yards on 23 carries, while Smith completed 14 of 26 passes for 187 yards. Issac Immel recorded six tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles for the Eagles.
