Lamar Turns Early Stops Into Shutout Win Over Huntsville

LAMAR — Lamar converted two early stops into a 14-point lead and protected it with a shutout defense Friday, defeating Huntsville 27-0 in the season opener.
The Warriors’ first possession nearly produced a touchdown when quarterback Karsten Schluterman broke a 65-yard run to the Huntsville 11. Huntsville linebacker Wyatt Dunham stopped the threat by intercepting Schluterman at the 1-yard line. Lamar soon regained possession near midfield and finished the next drive with Kendrick Carr’s 15-yard touchdown run. The kick missed, leaving Lamar ahead 6-0.
After Huntsville was stopped on fourth down, Schluterman connected with Carr on a 42-yard completion to the 1. Kasen Humphrey scored on a direct snap, and Grady Marvel ran in the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead. Huntsville free safety Riley Blake then intercepted a tipped pass late in the quarter, and the Eagles’ defense kept Lamar scoreless throughout the second period.
Huntsville received the second-half kickoff, but Lamar forced a punt. Schluterman later found Carr in the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown pass. The conversion failed, setting the score at 20-0. Carr finished with two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, while Schluterman passed for 161 yards and one score.
Huntsville quarterback Kollin Tucker made plays with his legs, including a seven-yard fourth-quarter keeper, but Lamar repeatedly closed drives. Marvel recorded 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss and one sack. Whitman Storment matched him with 10 tackles and led Lamar’s rushing attack with 120 yards on nine carries. Marvel added 69 yards on 14 attempts.
Lamar’s final touchdown followed Storment’s 25-yard misdirection run. Schluterman capped the drive with a 6-yard keeper, and Carr made the extra point. The Warriors stopped Huntsville on multiple fourth downs and won field position through special teams. Huntsville’s defense delivered two interceptions, while Lamar’s defense completed the shutout.
