Nashville Answers 15-Point Deficit With 35 Straight Points

NASHVILLE — Nashville answered an early 15-0 deficit with 35 consecutive points, using touchdown runs, short passing plays and defensive takeaways to defeat Arkadelphia 42-22 Friday night at Scrapper Stadium in the 7-4A opener.
The Scrappers improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Arkadelphia finished the night 2-2 and 0-1 after scoring on its first two possessions and adding a third-quarter touchdown followed by an onside-kick recovery.
Turner Ross opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Meakin with 10:05 left in the first quarter. Beau Lewis had extended the possession with a third-down reception. A successful two-point run made it 8-0.
An Arkadelphia interception set up the Badgers at Nashville’s 19. Caden Whitaker carried inside the 5, then scored from 2 yards out. The extra point extended the lead to 15-0 with 8:18 remaining.
Nashville’s defense began changing the game. Jailyn Staggers and Aiden Bradley combined for a sack, and Trendon Northcross intercepted Ross on the next play. Although Arkadelphia held on that possession, Nashville later put together a scoring drive behind consecutive first-down runs by Jakhari Starr. DJ Jefferson finished it with a 3-yard keeper with 30 seconds left in the quarter.
The Scrappers’ next touchdown drive began at their own 2. Starr gained 9 yards on the first snap, and Bryce Perrin turned a tunnel screen into a gain that carried Nashville across midfield. Jacoby Hopson finished with a 38-yard touchdown run with 7:21 left in the second quarter. Arkadelphia broke up the two-point pass, keeping its lead at 15-13.
Gauge Applegate later made a sliding catch to convert second-and-14 following a Nashville fumble recovery. The Scrappers moved ahead before halftime and entered the third quarter leading 21-15.
Staggers protected that lead by stopping Ross short on fourth-and-2 after Arkadelphia recovered a fumble in Nashville territory. The ensuing drive included a third-down reception by Perrin and rushing conversions by Jefferson and Starr. Jefferson’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Perrin made it 28-15 with 2:49 left in the third quarter.
Bo Dean then tipped a pass to himself and intercepted it, returning the ball into the red zone before Kaiden Richards caught him. Jefferson’s 4-yard touchdown run made it 35-15 with 53 seconds remaining.
Richards answered 24 seconds later, turning Ross’ pass into a 48-yard touchdown. Arkadelphia recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Nashville’s defense forced a punt early in the fourth quarter.
The Scrappers responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive that consumed 4:24. Perrin converted third-and-8 with a reception, and Starr scored around the left side with 6:14 remaining to make it 42-22.
Staggers added a fourth-quarter sack. On Arkadelphia’s final possession, Northcross deflected a pass near the goal line, and Kishon Jefferson intercepted it with 3:05 left. Nashville gained the first downs needed to run out the clock.
