Newport 49, Riverview 0
October 9 2026
Luke Sampson accounted for three touchdowns, ZayShawn Greer ran for two more and Newport used a late first-half burst to pull away from Riverview for a 49-0 road victory Friday in 2-3A play.
The Greyhounds scored twice in the final 49 seconds before halftime, turning a 14-0 advantage into a four-touchdown lead. Newport improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with its third consecutive victory. Riverview fell to 1-5.
Destin Jackson converted all seven extra points, and Newport’s defense supplied a touchdown while posting its second shutout in three games. The Greyhounds have outscored their first three conference opponents 141-9.
Newport’s opening opportunity came when Riverview failed to convert fourth-and-9 from its own 37. The Greyhounds overcame two penalties on the ensuing possession, with Greer breaking loose on a pitch before being ruled out at the 1. Sampson finished the drive with a 1-yard keeper, and Jackson’s kick put Newport ahead 7-0.
The Greyhounds covered 74 yards on their next possession. Sampson moved them into scoring position with a keeper, then dropped back to pass from the Riverview 13. Forced out of the pocket, he took off and powered through a defender at the goal line for his second rushing touchdown. Jackson made it 14-0 with 1:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Riverview forced Newport to punt on its first two possessions of the second quarter, keeping the margin at two touchdowns deep into the half. The Greyhounds then put together a 58-yard scoring drive, mixing runs by Sampson, Greer and Jataelyn Crite. Greer finished with a short touchdown run with 49 seconds remaining, and Jackson added the PAT.
Newport’s defense struck 39 seconds later. Pressure on the Riverview quarterback produced a fumble, and Crite scooped it up and returned it approximately 40 yards for a touchdown. Jackson’s fourth extra point sent the Greyhounds into halftime ahead 28-0.
Newport took the second-half kickoff and drove 54 yards. Jakhlen Spearman and Tavarius Hardaway contributed first-down receptions, and Sampson converted third-and-short with a keeper to the 4. Greer scored on a 4-yard run on the next play. Jackson’s PAT made it 35-0 with 7:48 left in the third quarter, bringing the running clock into effect. On Riverview’s next series, Russell and Crite made stops on short passes, helping force another punt without allowing a first down.
A holding penalty erased Crite’s apparent 62-yard touchdown run on Newport’s next possession, but the Greyhounds scored anyway. Sampson found Jaden Robinson on a short pass, and Robinson used his blocking to turn it into a 41-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. Jackson extended the lead to 42-0.
Another penalty wiped out Hardaway’s apparent 65-yard punt-return touchdown in the fourth quarter. Donnell Williams Jr. supplied the points instead, taking a handoff and racing 46 yards untouched. Jackson’s seventh successful kick completed the scoring.
Lane Stewart and Jesyn Russell helped lead the defensive effort, and Zyshonne Friar ended Riverview’s final possession with a fourth-down sack inside the last minute. Newport hosts Salem next Friday, Oct. 16, while Riverview travels to Melbourne.
