YELLVILLE — Luke Sampson scored on runs of 24 and 41 yards late in the third quarter and early in the fourth as Newport pulled away from Yellville-Summit for a 47-20 victory Friday night.

The Greyhounds (7-2, 6-0) set up a home game against Melbourne for the 2-3A conference championship with the win over Yellville-Summit (2-7, 1-5).

Newport led 27-12 late in the third quarter before three consecutive touchdown drives extended its advantage. Jataelyn Crite’s 19-yard run carried the ball to the 1, and Rashaun Rucker scored two plays later. The two-point run failed, leaving the Greyhounds ahead 33-12.

After forcing a punt, Newport drove 74 yards. Crite broke through the middle and fought past midfield to Yellville-Summit’s 39. Rucker followed with a first-down run to the 24, and Sampson finished the possession with his 24-yard touchdown run. An incomplete two-point pass kept the score at 39-12 late in the third quarter.

The Greyhounds stopped Yellville-Summit on fourth down early in the fourth quarter. Trevon Scott, Zabrien Pittman and Lane Stewart converged on the quarterback near the Panthers’ 41. Sampson then faked a handoff, escaped around the edge and covered the remaining 41 yards for another touchdown. His two-point pass to Jakhlen Spearman made it 47-12 with 11:45 remaining.

Yellville-Summit added a 5-yard touchdown pass and a two-point completion in the fourth quarter. Newport’s 47-20 lead held through the finish.
