Village Academy Completes Stunning Fourth-Quarter Comeback

Village Academy erased a 14-point first-quarter deficit and scored twice in the final five minutes to stun Bishop Gorman 35-34 Friday night.
Bishop Gorman controlled the opening quarter behind quarterback Eli Mercer. He found Mateo Cruz for an 18-yard touchdown, then Jalen Ross scored from 6 yards to build a 14-0 lead. Jess Norman III answered with a 46-yard touchdown run, but Mercer’s 29-yard strike to Cruz sent Gorman into halftime ahead 21-7.
Village cut the margin to 21-14 in the third quarter when Norman hit Freddy Bell for a 33-yard touchdown. Ross restored Gorman’s two-score lead with a 2-yard run, although the extra point missed, making it 27-14.
The comeback began early in the fourth. Linebacker John Combs stepped in front of a short pass and returned the interception 38 yards for a touchdown. Gorman responded with Mercer’s 5-yard keeper and led 34-21 with 7:44 remaining.
Norman then broke through the middle, bounced outside and raced 58 yards for his second rushing touchdown. Village’s defense forced a three-and-out, giving Norman the ball at his 32 with 2:31 left. He converted fourth-and-4 with a 12-yard scramble and later found Keith Rutledge for 19 yards to the Gorman 8.
Brad Holmes carried twice, scoring from 4 yards with 18 seconds remaining. Tom Reynolds’ fifth extra point gave Village its first lead, 35-34. Darrell Oates sealed it by sacking Mercer on Gorman’s final snap.
Norman finished with 247 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries while completing 8 of 14 passes for 123 yards and one score. Bell caught four passes for 73 yards. Gorman received 218 passing yards and three total touchdowns from Mercer, while Ross rushed for 112 yards and two scores. The Knights built the lead; the Beavers delivered the final answer when pressure and opportunity were greatest.
