10 former ASU players work out for NFL scouts

JONESBORO (3/18/11) – Ten former Arkansas State football players, including five that earned All-Sun Belt Conference recognition in 2010, worked out Friday for several National Football League scouts during the Red Wolves’ annual Pro Day.

The former all-conference players represented were offensive linemen Sifa Etu and Derek Newton, linebacker Javon McKinnon, defensive lineman Bryan Hall and defensive back M.D. Jennings.  Both Hall and Newton were named All-Sun Belt in both 2009 and 2010, and Newton recently participated in the NFL Scouting Combined.

The other players that went through various tests and drills were offensive linemen Kiano Prater, Drew Hilton and Dominic Padrta, defensive back Walter Moody and wide receiver Jonathan White.

The Red Wolves’ have had a player taken in the NFL Draft each of the last four years, including fullback Oren O’Neal, safety Tyrell Johnson, tight end David Johnson and defensive end Alex Carrington.

The event began shortly after 10:00 a.m. at the ASU Football Facility weight room.  The scouts put the players through a number of tests that included vertical jump, standing long jump and bench press during the weight-room session.  Shuttle drills, speed times and passing, receiving, blocking and defensive drills were conducted during the on-field testing held inside ASU Stadium field.

Included among the NFL teams represented were the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions.
