ASU defense stiffens on third downs
JONESBORO (4/13/11) - The Arkansas State football team was back on the field Wednesday, holding practice for the second straight day and 13th time this spring inside ASU?Stadium in shorts and shoulder pads.
The Red Wolves worked out early Tuesday morning as well after inclement weather forced them to reschedule Monday's practice. A-State will practice again Friday before holding its Spring Game at 10 a.m. Saturday. ASU coach Hugh Freeze
Following Wednesday's practice, team captains assigned for Saturday's game drafted players for their teams.
The Red Wolves' went through drills, special teams work, passing skeletons and team sessions before ending practice with a non-contact third down and red zone competition. The Red Wolves then surrounded the field goal team for a kicking competition.
"Defensively, it was pretty awesome," said ASU?head coach Hugh Freeze of today's practice. "I thought during the team run-pass early in practice it was very competitive. The defense dominated the third-down competition, but most of those were third down and at least five. Coach Kiffin has done a great job with our defensive lineman and their pass rush techniques, and Coach Allen is doing a great job with the linebackers, but right now the offense is struggling to pick up all the zone pressures. Our defense has a great third down package and its proven very difficult for our offense to pick up right now, but hopefully we'll be able to stay out of some of those third and longs when we're in live situations."
