HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 27 Marked Tree at No. 25 Cross County
This rivalry game has decided the 3-2A title most of the decade but not this year. Cross County's Blake Veasley has carried 225 times for 1,427 hard-earned yards this fall. And Rubin Hill, back from a Week 1 knee injury, recovered a key fumble last week in a 21-17 win over Salem. Cross County has won three in a row and is in position to grab the fourth or fifth playoff seed. Marked Tree sophomore RB Thadias Moore, a 1,000-yard rusher in junior high, ran for 139 yards and two TDs last week in a mild (32-18) upset of Clarendon.

WEEK 9 PREDICTIONS (favored team in CAPS followed by point spread.)
3-2A
Marked Tree at CROSS COUNTY (2): See 2A Game of the Week.
AUGUSTA (9) at Salem: Augusta bounced back from a 35-6 loss to rival McCrory to beat Cedar Ridge 47-18 last week behind speedster Ishma Clarks' 48-yard punt return and 40-yard TD run. Salem led Cross County 17-6 at halftime last week but gave up 15 unanswered points in the last 21 minutes.
WALNUT RIDGE (8) at E. Poinsett County: In a disappointing 2008, Walnut Ridge just missed the playoffs. Last week, junior RB Preston Matthews ran for 136 yards and caught a 98-yard TD pass as Walnut Ridge clinched a playoff berth.
MCCRORY (35) at Rector: McCrory's 15 seniors reached the playoffs last year as juniors. This year, they can sweep the 3-2A. McCrory senior RB Boyd Williams has rushed 109 times for 1,240 yards.
HAZEN (24) at Cedar Ridge: No. 3 Hazen did not play last week due to a forfeit by Marvell, plays host to No. 5 Carlisle next week.
4-2A
Hackett at UNION CHRISTIAN (7): UC managed just 130 yards last week but still beat J.C. Westside 14-0. UC beats Hackett this week, wraps up the No. 2 playoff seed and likely draws beatable Clarendon (6-2A) in the first round.
J.C. WESTSIDE (2) at W. Yell County: All five teams from the 4-2A are headed to the playoffs. Western Yell has scored 16 points this year. Westside failed on fourth-and-goal late in the first half last week in a 14-0 loss to Union Christian.
Magazine at MURFREESBORO (6): Battle of the Rattlers. Good non-conference test for No. 13 Magazine, which lost to 5-2A front-runner Danville 57-27 Week 5. Murfreesboro QB Tyler McRae turned in another solid performance last week by completing 12 of 19 passes for 216 yards and three TDs with one interception in a 27-14 win over Mount Ida.
5-2A
Cutter M Star at MOUNTAIN PINE (14): Cutter Morning Star appears headed to the playoffs for the second time in school history. CMS, which reached the playoffs in 2000, moves up to Class 3A in 2010.
DANVILLE (38) at Quitman: The visiting Little Johns rallied past Two Rivers last week 7-6 on a muddy field. Danville plays host to Mountain Pine next week for the 5-2A title. The 5-2A champion likely draws winless Western Yell in the first round.
Lutheran at BIGELOW (6); Long season for both teams is almost over.
Two Rivers at CONWAY CHRISTIAN (5): Conway Christian knocks off emotionally drained Two Rivers that just lost Yell County showdown to Danville 7-6.
6-2A
DES ARC (13) at Marvell: Probable forfeit by Marvell (down to seven players last week) gives Des Arc its third, unwanted open week of 2009.
Hughes at CARLISLE (38): Carlisle's Week 3 win over Class 3A Perryville looks better each week as Perryville whips Lamar and cracks the 3A Top 10.
Pal.-Wheatley at CLARENDON (8): Ty Vaughn leads the Clarendon defense in tackles. Clarendon allowing 19.5 ppg in league play, but gave up 300 yards in a 32-18 loss last week to 2-6 Marked Tree.
HAZEN (24) at Cedar Ridge: No. 3 Hazen did not play last week due to a forfeit by Marvell, plays host to No. 5 Carlisle next week.
7-2A
DIERKS (11) at Foreman: The Outlaws keep playoff hopes alive with wins at Foreman and at Mineral Springs the next two weeks.

SPRING HILL (15) at Mineral Springs: Spring Hill's Rodrea Jones topped 800 yards rushing for the year last week in a 63-40 win over Horatio. Spring Hill goes to Murfreesboro next Thursday (Week 10) for what should be the 7-2A title. The 7-2A champion draws Junction City in the second round of the playoffs.
8-2A
BEARDEN (45) at Norphlet: Top-ranked Bearden, which allows 5 ppg, did not give up a score to Woodlawn until the fourth quarter last week. The Bears are open Week 10 and probably will not be challenged until the quarterfinals when they'll likely meet No. 6 McCrory.
HERMITAGE (20) at Dermott: Hermitage pass-catch combo of QB Zack Ferrell to Tyler Courson is dangerous. Hermits led Smackover 14-0 last week before losing 45-26.
Strong at HAMPTON (1): Strong ran for 7 yards last week against Junction City.
Smackover at WOODLAWN (5): Woodlawn tries to nail down the No. 3 playoff seed, which would likely send it to the 6-2A champion in the second round. Carlisle (6-2A) beat Woodlawn 40-0 Week 6.
