Greene County Tech continues its torrid start. The Eagles (6-1), off to their best start since going 8-3 in 1990, lost at Forrest City 14-6 in Week 4, despite passing for 385 yards.
The success coincides with an improved defense, after the Eagles eliminated two-way starters. They give up just 10 points a game after surrendering 39 last season. Senior middle linebacker Tanner Wright (6-0, 240) improved his speed by losing 20 pounds in the spring. Wright averages 15 tackles per game "and makes plays behind the line of scrimmage," said coach Jeff Conaway. Eagle senior Justin Johnson has excelled at quarterback, his first year to play the position. Johnson completed seven of nine passes for 208 yards in last week's 45-0 win over Nettleton. Senior Standrick Williams has rushed for 835 yards and 12 TDs this fall.
West Helena turned the ball over a combined 17 times in setbacks to Forrest City and Wynne, but bounced back 41-14 last week against Blytheville. Cougar quarterback Markeith Jacobs passes accurately, and Antonio Hughes provides a threat running the ball.
LAST WEEK
Hootens.com correctly predicted 12 of 16 games (75 percent), nailing the point spread of Forrest City by 14 points over Paragould. For the season, Hootens.com has correctly predicted 116 of 151 games (77 percent).

BATESVILLE (4) at Blytheville: These are four of the teams tied for third in the league. Batesville has lost consecutive conference games for the first time since Weeks 9 and 10 in 2000.

Nettleton at FORREST CITY (24): Forrest City continues its run through the league. Junior running back Theodis Goodwin scored six TDs in last week's 53-39 win at Paragould. Nettleton hasn't scored in four of its past five games.
Paragould at WYNNE (14): Wynne has notched consecutive victories since the return of running back Okoye Oring from an injury. Paragould QB Chance Sugg passed for 287 yards and two TDs and ran for a pair of scores in last week's 14-point loss against Forrest City.
5A SOUTHEAST
Beebe at MILLS (1): Mills blew a 14-point advantage late in last week's 29-28 setback against Crossett. Beebe led LR McClellan by 28 points in the fourth quarter last week but won by just five points. Fullback Adam Griffis and halfback Colby Taylor provide the punch in the Badgers Dead T.
North Pulaski at CROSSETT (14): Crossett may have saved its season with a fourth-quarter rally against Mills last week. Speedy sophomore running back Orlando Robinson takes pressure off Crossett QB Derek Johnson.
Sylvan Hills at MONTICELLO (14): Sylvan Hills has snuck into the playoff picture with consecutive wins. Monticello gives up just 12 points per game.
WHITE HALL (16) at LR McClellan: White Hall gives up just 10 points per league game. Bulldog senior running back Larry Walls has rushed for 1,358 yards and 14 TDs this year. LR McClellan has lost 17 of its past 18 league games, but the Lions have talent with receivers Nicholas Cooper and Terrence Ingram.
5A SOUTHWEST
CAMDEN FAIRVIEW (7) at Hope: Hope has lost consecutive league game and the Bobcats might miss the playoffs for the second straight season after going 12 straight years (1996-2007). Camden Fairview overcame an 11-point halftime deficit and beat LR Christian by 17 points last week. Cardinal QB Chase Foster has passed for 700 yards and seven TDs and ran for 318 yards and three scores this season.
HS Lakeside at LR CHRISTIAN (10): LR Christian's Michael Dyer should set the state's all-time career rushing record this week. Dyer needs just 31 yards to break the mark of 7,122 yards, held by Elaine's Vernon Hicks. He blistered HS Lakeside for 237 yards and four TDs last season. HS Lakeside won its first game of the year last week, inserting senior Cory Lawrence (181 total yards) at QB.
MAGNOLIA (3) at Pulaski Robinson: Magnolia uses big plays from QB Addison Henson and running back L.J. Berry. Pulaski Robinson capitalizes on turnovers and stays in games with its running attack. The Senators beat Magnolia two of the past three meetings.
PULASKI ACADEMY (21) at Hot Springs: Hot Springs has lost five straight games and 11 of its past 12. Bruin QB Wil Nicks has passed for 2,775 yards and 23 TDs this season, most of it to receivers Zac Reyna (69 receptions, 1,008 yards and two TDs) and Garrett Lamb (61 catches, 754 yards and 10 TDs). Senior safety Sam Vogel paces Pulaski Academy with 68 tackles and two interceptions.
5A WEST
CAC at VILONIA (1): The winner probably takes the league's fourth playoff spot. All three of Vilonia sophomore James Sax's kickoff returns have gone for TDs this year. CAC's Eric Simmons usually breaks free for a long TD run every week.
Harrison at ALMA (14): Alma must shake last week's three-point loss at Greenbrier. The Airedales have won six of the past nine against Harrison. Harrison QB/safety Ryan Miller ran for a critical TD and swiped a fourth-quarter interception to preserve last week's one-point win over Morrilton.
Morrilton at GREENBRIER (11): Greenbrier must guard against overconfidence after beating heavily favored Alma last week. Greenbrier sophomore QB Neal Burcham has passed for 1,602 yards and 17 TDs this season. Morrilton makes plays with running back/kick return specialist Justin Criswell.
Siloam Springs at GREENWOOD (21): Siloam Springs has played Greenwood as tough as anyone in the state the past five years, losing five times by a total of 21 points, including 42-38 in double overtime a year ago. The hard-luck Panthers have lost two league games on a conversion attempts this season.
