GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 4 Lake Hamilton at No. 6 Pine Bluff
In 2008 Lake Hamilton and Pine Bluff exploded in an offensive shoot-out for the record books. The Zebras outscored the eventual state champs 73-66; the most points scored by Pine Bluff since beating Jackson, Tenn., 89-0 in 1925. The Zebras scored on their first seven possessions led by current senior quarterback Claude Johnson (6-1, 195). Johnson completed 18 of 22 passes for 366 yards and six TDs. However, the '09 Zebras have been their own worst enemy. In Pine Bluff's first two losses the Zebras blew big leads. FS Northside scored 33 unanswered points and West Memphis rallied from 28 points down. In their 22-20 loss last week at Watson Chapel the Zebras committed 16 penalties and three turnovers. Pine Bluff could have tied the game with 1:28 remaining but the Wildcats stopped Johnson on the two-point conversion attempt. Johnson connected on 11 of 22 passes for 172 yards and rushed 35 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns.
Lake Hamilton faces their first conference test at Pine Bluff. The Wolves won conference titles in 2007 and 2008 and graduated 17 starters from last year's state title team. This year the Wolves dismantled conference opponents Sheridan and Benton. Last week at Benton, the Wolves scored on eight of their first nine possessions while running only 16 plays in the first half. Senior QB Benson Jordan (6-4, 210) ran for two touchdowns en route to the 44-11 victory. Senior Kenny Raines (6-4, 250) returned from a foot injury that sidelined him the first four weeks. Raines ran for a TD and also sacked Benton QB Greg Jones for a safety. Lake Hamilton's defense must contain a Zebra offense that averages 33 points per contest.
