HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 3 Pulaski Academy at No. 1 Monticello
These teams were in the 5A Southeast together in 2006-2007. Pulaski Academy won the league title in 2007, knocking off the Billies 27-26.
Pulaski Academy traveled the hard road to semifinals, including wins at West Helena 50-39 and Greenwood 21-14 the past two weeks. But the Bruins could start three freshmen and three sophomores on offense this week. Receiver Zac Reyna (85 catches, 1,338 yards and five TDs) has played sparingly the past two weeks while recuperating from a high ankle sprain. Sophomore Kendall Bruce starts in Reyna's spot, tallying more than 100 yards at West Helena. Junior running back Greyson Skokos fractured his hip last week and won't return this season. Bruin QB Wil Nicks powers the Spread scheme, passing for 4,666 yards and 39 TDs this season. Nicks ran for 128 yards and two scores at Greenwood. Noseguard Dirk Tanner, linebacker Josh Jones and safety Sam Vogel pace Pulaski Academy's defense, which limited Greenwood to just 54 total plays.
Monticello senior QB Joe Carmical has tallied more than 2,000 all-purpose yards this year, despite playing just the first half of most lopsided victories. Carmical has passed for 298 yards and five TDs in the playoff, while running for 308 yards and three scores. Senior safety Brishen Mathews paces the Billies with more than 100 tackles and two interceptions. Senior Brandon Matthews caught a pair of TD passes last week, while junior Reggie Rayford paces Monticello with six TD snags this year.
Other Semifinal Game
No. 4 Greenbrier at No. 2 Camden Fairview
Greenbrier plays in the semifinals for the first time since 1980, and Camden Fairview returns for the second time in three years. Greenbrier, which went 1-9 a year ago and was voted by league coaches to finish eighth in the preseason, outgunned Little Rock Christian 54-50 last week.
The Panther surge correlates to improved linemen, said Coach Randy Tribble. Senior Dustin Hartwick leads the linemen from his center position. Senior Michael Montag, junior Matt Cain and sophomore Jarrid Govia log time up front. Sophomore quarterback Neal Burcham completes 66 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards and 33 touchdowns this year, and with just four interceptions. Junior running back Hunter Winston has rushed for 1,542 yards and 22 TDs and caught 35 passes for 659 yards and nine scores. Senior Justin Head plays multiple receiver slots and has caught 38 passes for 547 yards and three TDs, while classmate Brady Day has 45 catches for 411 yards. "We like to throw a lot of screens and execute those plays," Tribble said.
Camden Fairview claimed the 5A Southwest, winning at Pulaski Robinson 29-28 in Week 10. The Cardinals beat Blytheville and White Hall in the playoffs by a combined 82-20. Senior QB Chase Foster tore his ACL in Week 10 and underwent surgery last Thursday. Junior backup Brandon Keaton has completed 25 of 49 passes for 438 yards and four TDs this season. Senior William Brewer has rushed for 350 yards and three TDs, while Sybhrain Berry has rushed for 218 yards and four scores. At cornerback, Berry has collected 68 tackles and 11 interceptions this year, returning three for TDs. Safety James Gulley has 115 tackles while cornerback Antonio Ellis has 106 stops and two interceptions. "We've not seen anything like their secondary," Tribble said. "They lock up on receivers and it allows the rest of the defense to put pressure on the quarterback."
