No. 7 Lonoke vs. No. 6 Star City
The first game of 2010 kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug., 31 at UAPB's Golden Lion Stadium and features a pair of teams ready to launch deep postseason jaunts.

Lonoke won 11 games last season and advanced to the state title game for the first time since 1994. Senior quarterback Logan DeWhitt didn't play last year but boosts the passing attack with a strong arm. Jackrabbit seniors Blake Dill, Wes Plummer and Darius Scott make plays at receiver and in the secondary.

In the preseason, coaches in the 8-4A picked Star City to win its first conference title since 2003. The Bulldogs won nine games a year ago with senior running backs Demetri Goins and Hosia Rochell combining for 2,114 yards and 24 touchdowns. Senior QB Ty Towers provides the Bulldogs a run/pass threat.

Hooten's Arkansas Football TV show airs at 11 a.m. Saturdays on Fox 16 in Little Rock and KFSM in Fort Smith/Fayetteville, featuring Lonoke vs Star City, Charleston vs Clarksville and Pulaski Academy vs CAC.

SHILOH CHRISTIAN (7) vs. Watson Chapel (Mon., at UAPB): Two-time defending state champion Shiloh Christian faces a brutal non-conference schedule before rolling to its sixth consecutive league championship. The high-octane Saints averaged 45 points a year ago.
Berryville at YELLVILLE-SUMMIT (6): Berryville has won just seven games over the past three years. First-year coach Eric Daniel installed the Split Back Veer in spring practice. Yellville-Summit has beaten the Bobcats by a combined 26 points over the past two seasons.
PRAIRIE GROVE (3) at Lavaca: Lavaca has beaten Prairie Grove three of the past four seasons by an average of 12 points per game. But Prairie Grove's influx of junior high talent pays immediate dividends.
FARMINGTON (10) at Huntsville: These former conference foes meet in the opener after Huntsville moves up to Class 5A. Farmington beat the Eagles by 20 points a year ago and the Cardinals have won six straight in the series.
Jay, Okla. at GRAVETTE (14): Gravette has won 28 games over the past three years. Three-year starting offensive linemen T.J. Chevallier and Tyler Glenn help the Lions win battles up front.
Ozark at BOONEVILLE (10): These teams aren't conference foes for the first time since 1973. Booneville has won five of the past six over the Hillbillies.
Colcord, Okla. at GENTRY (2): Gentry beat the Colcord (Okla.) Hornets by a field goal last season. The Pioneers return one of the better stable of linebackers in the state with seniors Eathan Ramsey and Tyler Rosenthal.
Elkins at PEA RIDGE (1): Pea Ridge has won just three games over the past two years while losing to Elkins twice by a total of 15 points. Pea Ridge's improved secondary slows Elkins' passing attack.

2-4A
BATESVILLE (10) at Newport (Thurs.): Newport owned this series for more than two decades, winning 23 of 24 meetings from 1976-2000, but Batesville has won eight of the past nine. Newport running back/cornerback Artez Brown committed to Ole Miss in July.
STUTTGART (3) at McGehee: Stuttgart has beaten the Owls by a combined 51 points over the past two years. But McGehee keeps it closer in 2010 with running back T'Cambry Green (1,200 yards last year).
Mountain View at HEBER SPRINGS (24): These former conference foes meet for the first time in three years. Mountain View last beat the Panthers by 33 points in 2004.
Lonoke vs. STAR CITY (1) (Mon. at UAPB): Hootens.com Game of the Week. Lonoke's defense must carry it early while the offense adjusts with seven new starters.
Marshall at CLINTON (25): Clinton defeated Marshall by 34 points last season. The Yellow Jacket seniors and juniors went a combined 13-5 in their final junior high seasons.
HIGHLAND (8) at Cave City: Class 4A newcomer Cave City won nine games last season, but graduated three college signees (Thamail Morgan, Alan Wright and Tyler Woods). Highland returns 13 starters, and the junior high won seven games a year ago.
SOUTHSIDE BATESVILLE (7) at Cedar Ridge: Southside Batesville hasn't won since beating Marianna by eight points in Week 7, 2008. Cedar Ridge won two games last year, the first wins in school history.
Marianna is open.

3-4A
HIGHLAND (8) at Cave City: Class 4A newcomer Cave City won nine games last season, but graduated three college signees (Thamail Morgan, Alan Wright and Tyler Woods). Highland returns 13 starters and the junior high won seven games a year ago.
OSCEOLA (2) at Blytheville: Each school breaks in new head coaches. Blytheville's Maurice Moody installed the sparsely used Single Wing in spring drills. Osceola promoted junior high coach Russell Leggett in July after former coach Clinton Gore (171-67-2 record) left for start-up program Melbourne.
VALLEY VIEW (4) at Paragould: Valley View faces its first Class 5A team in the program's five-year varsity history. Paragould's top two running backs left the program for various reasons in the off-season.
DOLLARWAY (4) at Gosnell: Dollarway beat the Pirates by two points in the second round of the 2008 playoffs. The Cardinal attack showcases college prospect Trey Daniels (more than 2,000 career yards).
Pocahontas at BALD KNOB (7): Pocahontas has won just five games over the past two years. Bald Knob won a school-record 13 games a year ago, but the top playmakers graduated.
RIVERCREST (17) at Trumann: Rivercrest romped past Trumann by 26 points a year ago, and the Colts return starters at 16 positions. Trumann has won 12 games over the past three years.
SALEM (6) at Jonesboro Westside: This matchup has been decided by six points each of the past two seasons. Salem beat the Warriors 14-8 in 2009 while advancing to the playoffs for the first time in five years.

4-4A
Ozark at BOONEVILLE (10): These teams aren't conference foes for the first time since 1973. Booneville has won five of the past six over the Hillbillies.
Clarksville vs. CHARLESTON (7) (Thurs., at Razorback Stadium): The final night of Simmons First/Hootens.com Kickoff Week features Clarksville speedy Division I recruit Wesleigh Foster (more than 1,400 total yards a year ago). Charleston has outscored Clarksville 73-28 the past two years.
DEQUEEN (2) at Mena: DeQueen has beaten its former conference foe three straight seasons by an average of 22 points. DeQueen linebacker Yordi Moran has racked up almost 200 career tackles.
DOVER (14) at Two Rivers: Dover senior QB Colton Williams tallied more than 2,100 total yards and 20 TDs last season. His counterpart at Two Rivers, junior Blake Noakes, accounted for more than 2,200 yards and 22 TDs.
ATKINS (1) at Pottsville: This matchup has been decided by TD each of the past three seasons. Atkins' juniors went undefeated in junior high, while Pottsville's sophomores went 10-0 last fall.
Dardanelle at DANVILLE (1): Danville won 11 straight games last fall, but the 5-2A champs lost at Dardanelle by 21 points. Dardanelle senior QB Quayd Standridge generated more than 1,700 yards a year ago.
SUBIACO ACADEMY (2) at Lamar: Lamar has won a school-best 21 games over the past two seasons. Subiaco Academy won six games and went to the playoffs for the first time in school history last season.
Waldron at MANSFIELD (7): Mansfield scored in the final minute to beat Waldron by one point last season. Waldron has won just nine games over the past six years. Mansfield has beaten Waldron four consecutive seasons by an average of 17 points.

7-4A
NASHVILLE (8) at Hope: Hope has lost four straight against the Scrappers. Nashville first-year coach Tim Perry compiled a record of 68-19-1 at Central Arkansas Christian from 2001-2007.
PULASKI ACADEMY (2) vs. CAC: CAC has beaten its rival Pulaski Academy just once (2005) in the past 11 years, although they tied 26-26 in 2007. Both teams may rely heavily on sophomores this fall.
Arkadelphia at MALVERN (10): Malvern has won three straight over Arkadelphia by combined 101-35. Malvern lineman Grady Ollison (6-4, 270) committed to the University of Arkansas during the summer.
PULASKI ROBINSON (7) at Hot Springs: Hot Springs first-year coach Chris Vereen led DeQueen to 18 victories over the past two years. He inherits a Trojan squad that won 18 games over the past six years.
LR McClellan at ASHDOWN (6): Ashdown promoted William Frazier to head coach in July when Chris Hill left after two seasons. Little Rock McClellan has won just six games over the past five years, but it plays better in September than later in the year.
DEQUEEN (2) at Mena: DeQueen has beaten its former conference foe three straight seasons by an average of 22 points. DeQueen linebacker Yordi Moran has racked up almost 200 career tackles.
LR Christian at PULASKI OAK GROVE (1): Pulaski Oak Grove usually plays its rival tough. The Hornets beat Little Rock Christian 21-7 in 2008 and lost by a TD last fall. Pulaski Oak Grove features a speedy backfield with Eric Parks and Trooper Tolbert.
Bauxite at GLEN ROSE (1): Bauxite first-year coach Shane Clancy debuts against the Miners' top rival, which they beat 28-27 a year ago. Glen Rose senior running back Steven Kehner has rushed for almost 3,800 yards and 49 TDs over the past two years.

WARREN (7) at Fordyce: Warren first-year defensive coordinator Clark Watkins spent the previous three years as Fordyce's head coach. The Lumberjacks lack linemen but feature some of the better skill players in South Arkansas.
Mayflower at DUMAS (17): Dumas coach Mark Courtney raves about the Bobcats' recently completed indoor workout facility. Bobcat senior QB Darion Griswold has helped Dumas win 12 of its past 14 regular-season games.
STUTTGART (3) at McGehee: Stuttgart has beaten the Owls by a combined 51 points over the past two years. But McGehee keeps it closer in 2010 with running back T'Cambry Green (1,200 yards last year).
Hamburg at MONTICELLO (6): Former Monticello assistant Greg Tiner debuts as head coach against the program that gave him his first assistant's job. Tiner also assisted at Sheridan, Star City, Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University over the past three decades. Monticello running back Bryan Handley rushed for 1,144 yards with limited touches a year ago.
BARTON (4) at DeWitt: Former Monticello coach Van Paschal installed the Double Slot offense during summer workouts. DeWitt has won just 10 times in the past six years.
Marvell at LAKE VILLAGE (12): Marvell hung with the Beavers before losing by eight points in last year's opener. Lake Village senior quarterback Jacorrious White could emerge as one of the top playmakers in South Arkansas.
